Good Luck Seniors! You Will Be Missed!!!

Senior Night Part II, Almost Storybook Finish

Thursday, May 12th ~ Dublin, West – In what may be the appearance of another new tradition at Scioto, Coach Elias put his 9 seniors on the field to start together for the first time in their careers. They played rock solid defense, hit the ball all over the yard, and pitched good enough to win most games. Unfortunately, the fairy tale story would hear the clock strike midnight as the team from across the river pulled out all the stops, made 5 pitching changes and substituted everyone they possibly could in an all out effort to win the cross town showdown. The Irish out up 11 runs on 12 hits, but unfortunately it just wasn’t enough as they surrendered 13 runs, on 13 hits losing by a final score of 13-11.

Josh Nelsen started on the mound for the Irish and kept his opponent off balance and held them scoreless for the first two innings. The second time through the order, they started to get to him, as in the third he allowed 3 runs, two of them unearned. In the 4th, a homerun and a double would lead to 3 runs. In the 5th a string of base hits and a hit batter would be his final undoing. Tom Ansley was called in for relief and was able to work out of a jam in the 5th, but would surrender two runs in the bottom of the 6th to take the hard luck loss.

Top of the line defensive plays were the norm rather than the exception for the Irish Thursday night. Jacob Nau made two great plays in right. In the first he caught up to a ball going over into the gap, and the final out of the second inning as he ranged all the way over to the foul line to pull in the final out of the inning at a full gallop. Dom Rosso owned the third inning picking up a pair of 6-3 groundball assists, and flagging down a major league sky-high pop-up. Ansley was like a rock at first making stretch after stretch on numerous close call plays. And Nick Keeley dove once to his left to snag a hot shot toward the hole, but was unable to get the throw off. Later in the game, he would dive to his right and cut off a ball going up the line, and was this time was able to get back to his feet and make the throw across. But he really stole the show in the bottom of the 6th, with the bases full and two outs, a pop foul down the first base line chased Nick, who was now playing first, over to the brick wall. He reached over the wall, made the catch and fell out of the stadium. However he was ruled out of play, and possibly the best defensive play of the year was disallowed.

The offense for the Irish came from everywhere in the Scioto line-up as they would bat around in the 4th and 6th innings. The big bops belonged to Christian Stamets who hit a bases loaded, two out double to the base of the fence in left center, and would be followed by Chase Thompson’s big fly over the right field fence for his first homerun of the year. How many times do you see it, when a fielder makes a great play in the outfield and then comes right up to the plate? Nau’s catch of a curling drive on the foul line at the end of the 2nd inning saw him come up to the plate in the top of the third. He would deposit a single down the right field line to start the inning. He would then steal 2nd and score on Thompson’s double. In the top of the 4th, the Irish would get two quick outs before starting their rally. Back to back singles to Zach Gerrasch and Josh Nelsen, and a 4 pitch walk to Nau would load the bases. Sam Ehret would work a walk for his first RBI of the year scoring Gerrasch. At this point, there was a new pitcher, and this would set the stage for Stamets and Thompson. They welcome the new pitcher with their two big hits and 5 RBI’s to put Scioto ahead by a score of 7-3. Ehret would start the rally again in the 6th with a leadoff walk. Stamets would be hit with a pitch, and Thompson would load the bases with a single to center. Keeley would hit a rope to center to score Ehret leaving the bases loaded. A groundball to third would bring home 2 runs as the third baseman tried to force the speedy Stamets at the plate but hurried his throw, sending it wide of the catcher, allowing Thompson to scamper home as well. The Irish’s final run would be Keeley scoring on Nelsen’s second single of the game.

It was a great night for the Irish Seniors. Lots of highlights, lots of key hits, scoring and stellar plays in the field. There were a lot of memories generated on this evening, and these young men will have a lot to look back on from this night. Kudos to Coach Elias for rewarding the seniors' efforts of the last 4 years, with a game that was fun for all of the seniors and their parents, and to see them go out playing the game they love, for one last time, together! Sometimes, there are things that are more important than winning a game...

This loss put a pin in the Irish season, dropping their record to 13-15, with a 7-7 OCC Cardinal record. Next up or the Irish is the banquet, which will take place Tuesday night, May 17th at 6:00.

JV Beats Coffman To Close Out Season

Thursday, May 12th ~ Dublin – The JV team jumped out to a quick 4 run lead early, but let Coffman get back to 4-3. Later in the game the Irish would push ahead by 5 but once again, Coffman would battle back and eventually tie the game 9-9. Scioto would hold the Rocks scoreless in the top of the 7th and would eventually push across the winning run in the bottom, to take the final game of the year by a final score of 10-9. They would be the only team of the three levels to beat those guys from across the river!

Nick Berg started the game on the mound for the Irish, and did what he was asked to do, and that’s give them a chance to win. He did just that, and kept the Rocks at a distance, but would eventually run out of gas in the top of the 6th. Nolan Wehner came on in relief in the top of the 6th, but the Rocks were able to tie the game. After facing one batter in the 7th, Wehner would yield to Brayden Pfieffer who completed the top of the 7th inning, and turned it over to the Irish offense for them to pull out the exciting win.

Both teams would be held scoreless in the first inning, but Scioto would jump on the board as they batted around and plated 4 runs in the bottom of the 2nd. Berg would reach on a leadoff single and would score on Brian Cook’s double. Nick Smith would reach on an error and Will Styers would walk to load the bases. Then with two outs Tim Shadoan would get the big hit of the inning, a triple with three big 3 RBIs making the score 4-0 after 2. Coffman would draw back to 4-3 in the top of the third, but Irish weren’t finished.

In the bottom of the 4th the Irish would send 8 batters to the plate scoring 5 times to pushed their lead to 8-3. Another Styers walk would get things rolling, Wehner would chip in a single and Nate Gastaldo would Walk to load the bases. This time around, Chance Dummitt would get the big hit, tripling, picking up 3 RBIs, and Berg would follow with a double driving home Dummitt. The Irish would tack on a lone run in the 5th scoring Smith who led off with a single, moved up on a single by Styers, and driven in n a single off the bat of Shadoan, making the score 9 -7.

After Coffman tied the score at 9 in the top of the 6thm, the Irish the excitement for the bottom of the 7th. Styers would lead off with a single as he reached base for the 4th time on the day. Pfieffer would move Styers into scoring position by laying down the sacrifice bunt. A Shadoan walk and Gastaldo safe on an error would load the bases again. Dummitt would take full advantage single thru a drawn in infield for the walk off RBI making the final 10-9.

Following up the season ending victory, the JV team will join their baseball brethren for the season ending awards banquet Tuesday night.

Freshman Drop Season Finale to Coffman

May 12, 2011 ~ Dublin – Matt Messick joined his freshmen classmates for the first time this season and was welcomed by his friends and classmates. Unfortunately, the Dublin Coffman Rocks weren’t as welcoming. Their bats delivered 10 runs in the first two innings and knocked Messick off the mound early and earned a 10-2 victory over the Irish. Since the second game of last Saturday’s doubleheader, the Irish defense has allowed multiple runs in the first inning and tonight was no different. The Rocks scored six times in the 1st inning off of four hits, two walks and several Irish miscues. There were similar results in the 2nd inning with the Rocks scoring four times with three hits, two walks and an error. Nate Ross replaced Messick on the hill and was able to pitch 5 1/3 scoreless innings. Ross pitched well and was assisted with two web gems from Bradley Dinan’s glove. The first was a diving catch from the second base position in the 3rd inning and the second was a bases loaded diving catch from the third base position. On the second catch, he has able to double-up the runner at third base to close the 7th inning. Ross faced 20 batters during his turn on the hill and he collected 16 outs during his run.

The Irish were held scoreless during the first two innings with only Max O’Connell collecting a single. Jake Schafer did score in the 3rd by reaching base on a throwing error and advancing on a series of errors. Spencer Talentino single din the 3rd but was stranded at second base. The Irish 4th started with singles off of Messick’s and Dinan’s bats. Messick scored when the Rocks’ catcher’s throw was misplayed during a Dinan steal attempt. The Irish were unable find home plate again and only collected one more hit from Amnjot Hothi in the 5th.

The Freshmen Irish closed out their first high school season with a 6-14 overall record and a 4-11 in the OCC.

#4 New Albany Too Much For Irish

Wednesday, May 11th ~ New Albany – While Scioto started off like gangbusters in tonight’s Sectional Championship match-up with Central Ohio’s #4 ranked Eagles of New Albany, they just couldn’t get the runs across the plate. New Albany would be held scoreless until the bottom of the 3rd when they would plate 3 runs, which proved to be all they would need, as the Irish offense just never got rolling. Scioto would leave the bases loaded in the 1st and 6th innings, and other than those two innings, the Irish would only have two other base runners, both courtesy of being hit by pitch. The Eagles would overpower Scioto and coast to the 9-0 victory moving on to the District Semifinal game.

A Kris Simonton single to left to lead off the game, a HBP to Aaron Strausbaugh and a single up the middle by Austin Mooney would load the bases in the first with one out, but all three would be stranded right where they were. Straus would get hit by another pitch in the 3rd and Dom Rosso would do the same in the 5th, but they would go no further. In the 6th Scioto would load the bases again on a single by Mooney (or was it an error?), a solid single to center by Stevie Carter and an error by the shortstop off the bat of Nick Keeley. But again, the rally would end right there.

Simonton started on the bump, and pitched 3 2/3 innings, before giving way to Strausbaugh, who pitched 2/3 of an inning before he handed the ball to Phillip Parrott who finished the game. Simonton would take the loss, while Straus and Parrott combined to pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief. The defense wouldn’t hold up their end of the bargain, committing 4 errors behind Simo, leading to several runs and extra outs which is almost always fatal. One defensive bright spot was when Rosso had another stellar play in left field. He raced all they way over, making a catch just in front of the retaining fence down the left field wall before running into the fence, but he was able to get the ball back in to hold the runner at second base.

While the loss puts an end to the Scioto run through the playoff tournament, Scioto is scheduled for an additional game to take on their other cross-town rival, Dublin Coffman on Thursday, at Coffman, at 5:00.

Freshmen Irish Drop Second Game to Monarchs

May 11, 2011 ~ Dublin – The Freshmen Irish hosted the Marysville Monarchs tonight and were unable to get the offense on track until it was too late. They dropped their third game in a row losing to the Monarchs 11-4. Entering tomorrow’s final game, their record stands at 6-13 overall and 4-11 in the OCC.

Marysville posted three unearned runs in the top of the 1st off of starter Spencer Talentino and put the Irish in the hole early. The Irish were held scoreless for the first two innings getting their only offensive output from a Trevor Jones single. Andrew McKinley opened the 3rd inning with a single but was forced out at second base on a Talentino fielder’s choice. After stealing second and third base, Talentino scored off of a Scott Carter sacrifice fly to right field. Max O’Connell also singled in the 3rd but was forced out at third base for the final out of the inning. The Irish were held scoreless the next three innings with Talentino collecting the only hit during the stretch.

The Irish did put three runs across the plate in the 7th inning that started with an Amnjot Hothi base on balls. Hothi was forced out at second base on Talentino’s fielder’s choice. Carter followed with a single and then O’Connell doubled in Talentino for the first run on the inning. Bradley Dinan’s ground out to the shortstop scored Carter and then Nate Ross singled to score Carter for the third and final run of the inning.

The Irish host Coffman on Thursday for their final game of the season. Let’s hope that they finish on a high note.

Freshmen Drop Close One To Olentangy Liberty

May 10, 2011 ~ Powell – The Freshmen Irish traveled to Olentangy Liberty to take on the Patriots in an OCC league game, unfortunately they left Powell with a 7-6 loss. Their record fell to 6-12 overall and 4-10 in the OCC. The Irish didn’t get off to their usual fast start and were only able to post one hit during the first three innings. That lone hit came off of Andrew McKinley’s bat in the 3rd. During the same three innings, the Patriots were able to post 5 runs on the board against starter Bradley Dinan. Dinan pitched 5 2/3 innings and struggled getting the top half of the Patriots batting order out. Four of the first five batters had all of the runs and almost all of the hits.

The Irish offense came alive in the top of the 4th and posted five runs to tie the score. The inning started with a Scott Carter walk, followed by a Max O’Connell single and then another walk to Dinan to load the bases. After a Patriots 3-2-3 double play, Jacob Schafer and Eli Chaffin were each hit by a pitch forcing in the first run. Jordan Hill and McKinley each reached on a throwing error by the shortstop allowing the other four runs to score. Dinan was able to get the Patriots out in order in the bottom half of the 4th and gave his offense a chance to take the lead. And that is just what they did. O’Connell and Nate Ross each reached base on a walk. Schafer then proceeded to single to right scoring O’Connell and taking the lead 6-5. The Patriots answered in their half of the 5th by scoring the final two runs and forcing Dinan off the mound. The Irish were unable to get a run across the plate in the 6th or 7th inning and lost by a final score of 7-6.

They play Marysville at home on Wednesday and end their season at home Thursday against Dublin Coffman.

Irish Storm Into Sectional Championship Game

Monday, May 9th ~ Dublin - The Scioto baseball team spotted the Golden Gales of Lancaster 2 runs in the top of the first inning. The Gales would string together a double and a pair of singles to jump out to the 2-0 lead. The rest of the game was all green, silver & white as the Irish would score 12 runs on 14 hits, and take full advantage of more than a handful of Lancaster errors to romp to the 12-2 run rule "come-from-behind" victory in 6 innings. The victory evens the Irish record at 13-13 for the season.

Austin Mooney had a rough start, but after the first inning, settled into his rhythm, and didn’t allow a Golden Gale base runner to reach second base the rest of the way. Mooney scattered 5 hits, struck out 5, and didn’t walk a batter in his 3 2/3 innings of work, picking up his 4th W of the year. Phillip Parrott would come on in relief, and be just as dominant as he pitched a hitless 2 1/3 innings, striking out two and allowing a lone base runner on a walk in the top of the 5th.

Kris Simonton led the Irish charge with a perfect 4 for 4 at the plate. He stole a pair of bases and scored twice. Mooney had a week’s worth of RBIs as he drove in 5 Irish base runners with his pair of singles and a double, and scored twice himself. Tyler Flaherty chipped in three hist of his own, including a double, and he would cross the plate 3 times. Aaron Strausbaugh was safe on an error on a botched sacrifice bunt, and walked, and he would score twice. Chase Thompson ripped a lead off double down the right field line, and would score on a the fake double steal play Simonton took from his sister’s playbook, more commonly known as, “floppy fish”.

With the game firmly in hand, Coach Elias substituted his batting order, and the boys took full advantage of the opportunity. Sam Ehret led off with a grounder that was misplayed by the third baseman, and Zach Gerrasch reached on a ball bobbled by the shortstop. When Jacob Nau was hit by a pitch, the Irish had the bases loaded with nobody out. Thompson hit a grounder to the drawn in infield, and the throw from the second baseman pulled the catcher off the plate as Ehret slid home with the walk off run-rule.

The Irish take to the Road for the Sectional Championship game, facing the 15-5 New Albany Eagles. The game will take place Wednesday, in New Albany, with first pitch scheduled at 5:00.

Varsity Splits DH With Orange

Saturday, May 7th ~ Lewis Center - Once again, the Irish jumped out to a lead in the first inning, scoring two in the top of the first on a lead off single and steal by Kris Simonton, a single by Aaron Strausbaugh and a sacrifice fly by Tyler Flaherty which would plate the first run of the game. An error on a Stevie Carter groundball would score the 2nd run of the game. Orange would lead off the bottom of the inning with a single but Austin Mooney would gun down the runner attempting to steal second. After a single, a slick 5-4-3 double play would end the threat.

Olentangy Orange would break out in the bottom of the 2nd using 5 walks, a HBP and a timely double to plate 5 runs. They would add a single run in the bottom of the third to take a 6-2 lead. The Irish would fight back and score a pair of runs in the top of the 4th on consecutive singles by Mooney, Carter and a bunt single by Dom Rosso which would load the bases. A ground out to shortstop by Nick Keeley would plate the 3rd run and a sacrifice fly would score the last run of the first game for the Dublin nine. That would be a close as the Irish would get as Orange scored 8 runs in the next 3 innings and would win the first game of the dh going away with a 5 inning 14-4 run rule.

However, the second game was a different story. Olentangy Orange would jump out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on 3 singles and an error. The 2-0 lead held up until the top of the fourth when Scioto exploded for 3 runs with a lead off walk to Mooney, a single by Keeley, an error by the Pioneers pitcher, a double by Straus and sac flies by AJ Barnhardt and Chase Thompson.

Orange would score a pair of runs in the bottom of the 6th to take a 4-3 lead. But the Irish were not through as Chase Thompson would start the 7th with a single, a sac bunt by Simo would move Chase to 2nd, a HBP to Rosso and a single by Flaherty would load the bases. Mooney would tie the score a sac fly to center and Stevie Carter would get the biggest hit of the game with a shot up the middle to plate 2 more runs and give the Irish a 6-4 lead heading to the bottom of the 7th.

Phillip Parrott who would come in and close the door after surrendering a leadoff single, he would strike out the next batter and allow a walk to the next hitter. However, he was able to coax a liner to Simo at short and he would step on the bag at second for a game ending double play. Flaherty starting his first game of the year would pitch a stellar six innings of baseball. He had 3 K's (all in the first inning) and permitted 3 walks. He was able to keep the Pioneers at bay until the Irish bats awoke and recorded his 2nd win of the year. Parrott would pick up his 1st save of the year.

Catchers Austin Mooney and Chase Thompson were outstanding, throwing out 5 Pioneer runners attempting to steal today.

Scioto begins Division I Sectional Tournament play on Monday, May 9th, hosting the Golden Gales of Lancaster with a 5:00 PM start.

Freshmen Irish Split Weekend DH With Wildcats

May 7, 2011 ~ Dublin – The Freshmen Irish hosted the Westerville South Wildcats today for a noon doubleheader and split the contests with their opponents. The Irish won the opener 8-2 behind the strong pitching of Nate Ross and some hot Irish bats. Game 2 was another story altogether as the Irish were unable to get on track and lost 12-0. The weekend games leave the Freshmen Irish with an overall record of 6-11 and an OCC record of 4-9.

Ross pitched five innings in the opener allowing the Wildcats leadoff hitter to score in each of the first two innings, but that is all they got in Game 1. Ross struck out four batters and allowed his defense to support his game winning pitching effort. Jake Schafer came in to relieve Ross in the 6th and closed the game for the Irish. Ross was helped at the plate today by his offense that scored three runs in each of the first two innings. The bottom of the first started with a Spencer Talentino triple off the left field wall followed by a Scott Carter RBI single also to left. Max O’Connell walked and Ross reached on an error scoring Carter. After a Schafer walk, Jordan Hill singled in O’Connell for the third run. The second inning started again with a Talentino walk, followed by a Carter single and an RBI single from O’Connell. Bradley Dinan then followed with a single to right center knocking in Carter. After a Ross sacrifice bunt to move the runners, Trevor Jones’ grounded out to the shortstop that allowed O’Connell to score the third run of the 2nd inning. The Irish scored two more insurance runs in the 5th and 6th innings highlighted by a Hill double and a Jones single that each scored runs.

Game 2 was another story altogether with the Irish unable to continue their Game 1 efforts. Carter got his first pitching start of the year and ended up taking the loss. The Wildcats struck early scoring three runs in the first and then proceeded to score in each of their four innings at bat. Meanwhile for the Irish, they were only able to find four hits during their five innings at the plate. Talentino singled to open the Irish half of the 1st. Hill singled in the 3rd and made it to third base before being stranded. Dinan singled in the 4th and was part of three players stranded. Andrew McKinley singled to left in the 5th and was unable to advance.

Going back to last week’s double header versus Pickerington, The freshmen have played six games and Talentino has collected 5-singles; 5-doubles; 1-triple and 1-home run in his last 23 at bats. During that stretch, he earned a .957 slugging percentage. On another highlight, Dinan has hit safely in each game earning a 17 game hitting streak and a nearly .500 batting average. Let’s hope the bats stay hot as the freshmen close out their season next week with three scheduled games. They travel to Olentangy Liberty on Tuesday, host Marysville on Wednesday and Dublin Coffman on Thursday.

Irish Drop Final League Game

Friday, May 6th ~ Dublin – The Dublin nine would get on the board first in the last OCC game of 2011 by scoring a run in the bottom of the second on a lead off single by Stevie Carter, followed by a single by Dom Rosso and a two out RBI hit by Chase Thompson. The lead would hold up until the top of the 4th when the Monarchs would get the equalizer with a single to left, a bloop single to right with Christian Stamets and Aaron Strausbaugh colliding which allowed the runners to reach 2nd and 3rd. A groundout to Short would plate the tying run.

The game would remain tied until the top of the sixth. Austin Mooney would come on in relief and after retiring the first 2 batters of the inning, he would hit the next batter and a stand up triple to right center would put the visitors ahead to stay. Marysville would add 2 insurance runs off of Aaron Strausbaugh in the 7th on a walk, a bad hop single over the glove of Simo and the second stand up triple in as many innings put them up 4-1 which would be the final score.

The Irish wasted a terrific pitching effort by Josh Nelson who scattered 3 hits over his 5 inning stint. Scioto could only muster six hits in the game. They finish 7-7 in league play.

The Irish head to Olentangy Orange tomorrow for a dh beginning at 10AM.

Monarchs Overpower Freshmen Irish

May 6, 2011 ~ Marysville – The Freshmen Irish traveled to Marysville to compete against the Monarchs and were upended in the last half of the game losing 9-6 in an OCC league game. The loss drops the Irish to 5-10 overall and 3-8 in league play. The Irish started strong again this evening, but were unable to keep the momentum going in their direction. Coming off of yesterday’s 4-4 batting performance, Spencer Talentino opened the game with a double and later scored the game’s first run on a Max O’Connell ground out. He then proceeded to the mound to pitch two shut out innings. In leading off the third, he hit a homerun over the center field fence for the team’s first four bagger of the year.

After the Talentino home run, Scott Carter collected his first of three singles of the evening and scored the game’s third run off a Bradley Dinan ground out. With an early three run lead, the Irish defense allowed the Monarchs to score one run in the bottom of the 3rd off of two back to back singles and a throwing error. The Irish seemed to be in control of their destiny through the 4th inning and into their half of the 5th. In the 5th, Carter collected his second single and then scored on a Dinan RBI single to right field. After stealing second base, Dinan scored off a Nate Ross single to center field. Entering the bottom half of the 5th with a 5-2 lead, the Monarchs came to life scoring five times off of four hits and two walks. Talentino was relieved half way through the 5th by Trevor Jones, who was finally able to stop the bleeding.

The Irish earned their last run of the evening in the 6th that started with back to back singles from Jake Schafer and Jordan Hill. Schafer was forced out at third base on a sacrifice bunt off of the bat of Andrew McKinley. The Monarch pitcher, Jacob McNabb made an excellent play to force Schaffer out at third. Hill later scored on Carter’s third single of the evening. Unfortunately the Irish were unable fix the damage of the 5th inning and recapture the lead. The Monarchs scored twice in the 6th to add to their lead allowing McNabb to pitch a complete game. Jones picked up the loss for the Irish in relief.

The Freshmen Irish host the Westerville South Wildcats this Saturday on the Varsity Field starting at noon. Let’s hope they get back on the winning track entering their last week of the season.

Senior Night A Smashing Success For Varsity

Thursday, May 5th ~ Dublin – The first annual Irish Baseball Senior Night came off without a hitch, Mother Nature provided a beautiful evening and the boys started gave a solid effort from start to finish en route to a complete thumping of Dublin Jerome. There was a little payback from Friday night’s 8-7 loss to Jerome, and the Scioto bats were active as they pounded out 12 runs on 15 hits in the run-rule shortened game, beating the Celtics by a final score of 12-2. Jerome never seemed to get their offense going, and their defense was suspect at best, as they were shaking off the rust from not being able to practice due to the recent weather, and something about the Lego Club… The victory moves their record back to .500 on the year to 11-11 on the season, and 7-6 in the OCC Cardinal.

Kris Simonton pitched another complete game gem picking up the win, his third on the year. He surrendered a run on a pair of doubles in the top of the first inning, but settled into a nice groove for the rest of the game. He would allow only an unearned run the rest of the way as he scattered 3 hits in his 4 innings other innings of work. He walked only 2 and struckout 3 on the night.

After spotting Jerome to a 2-0 lead, the Irish bats heated up in the bottom of the 2nd. Nick Keeley led the way with a double to the gap. Stevie Carter laid down a nice sacrifice bunt that the Celtic pitcher could not get the handle of. Christian Stamets would pick up an RBI on a single to left. An errant pick off throw to first trying to get Stamets would allow Carter to score the tying run. In the third, Scioto would send 11 hitters to the plate as they batted around scoring 6 runs to take control of the game. Simonton would lead off with a single, and the Celtics would intentionally walk the hot hitting Tyler Flaherty. Austin Mooney would make them pay with a slicing shot to right on an 0-2 pitch, scoring Simonton and moving Flaherty to third. A single by Keeley would score Flaherty. A ground out to the pitcher would move Keeley to third and Mooney to second. With two outs and the runners moving, a soft fly ball off the bat of Stamets would be misplayed by the Celtic centerfielder allowing both runners to score. Dom Rosso joined the hit parade with a dying quail to left center. With the play in front of him a heads up Stamets Raced to third, and an equally heads up play by Rosso as he took second base on the throw to third. That play by Rosso paid immediate dividends on the next pitch, a single through the hole on the right side by Chase Thompson, chased home both Stamets and Rosso.

Scioto would add a single run in the bottom of the 4th, the product of a lead off, stand-up triple by Flaherty, and a single by Mooney, pushing the score to 9-2. In the bottom of the 5th, the Irish would put the game away by going ahead by 10 and invoking the mercy rule. A leadoff single by Thompson, and another single by Simonton and a walk to Aaron Strausbaugh would load the bases. Tom Ansley came up and promptly delivered a shot over the left fielder’s head for a double scoring two runs. An intentional walk to Mooney would load the bases to set up the force anywhere. Carter would then stroke a liner to left scoring Strausbaugh, and ending the game.

The Irish return to the field on Friday night at home as they host Marysville, for the second half of their home and home OCC Cardinal match up. The game was originally scheduled to be in Marysville, but the weather dictated rearranging schedules earlier in the week.

JV drops Game To Celtics

Thursday, May 5th ~ Dublin – It was a close battle early for the Irish and the Celtics of Dublin Jerome, but the Celts would eventually pull away to take the victory over visiting Scioto. Both teams scored a pair of runs in the first and the Irish would take a brief lead after 2 with the score 3-2 in their favor. But that was all the offense the Irish bats had in them, as they would eventually fall by a final of 9-3.

Chance Dummitt started on the hill for the Irish and pitched 4 solid innings, but would get saddled with the loss. Austin Troyer and Riley Bush each would come in and pitch an inning in relief.

Tim Shadoan would start things off right away for the Scioto offense with a single, and Matt Vogel would be hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt by Dummitt would put the runners in scoring position. Nick Berg would pick up an RBI with a single driving home Shadoan, and an RBI ground out by Brian Cook would plate Vogel putting the Irish on top 2-0 at the time. After Jerome tied the score in the bottom of the 1st, the Irish would respond with a single run in the top of the 2nd to take the3 3-2 lead. Carl Kubalak would lead off with a single, and would be replaced on a fielder’s choice by Nolan Wehner. A double to the fence off the bat of Vogel would plate Wehner giving the Irish the brief lead. But the Jerome pitchers would shut down the Irish offense allowing only 3 singles and a pair of walks over the last 5 innings. Swinging a hot bat off the IR was Nick Smith, as he had a walk and a pair of singles.

The JV Irish will hit the road and travel to Marysville to take on the Monarchs in an OCC League game on Friday night at 5:00.

Freshmen Irish Drop League Game to Patriots

May 5, 2001 ~ Dublin – Spencer Talentino and Trevor Jones both had hot bats last night, but it wasn’t enough the defend their home field against the Olentangy Liberty Patriots. The Irish were defeated 15-6 in a league game. The final score wasn’t completely indicative of the entire game with the game being tied 6-6 after five innings. Talentino was 4-4 with two doubles and two singles scoring twice. Jones was 3-3 with three singles, one run scored and one RBI. Bradley Dinan started the game on the mound and allowed one in the first, none in the second and four in the 3rd. He started the 4th and after one out the next two batters reached on a single and a fielding error. Jake Schafer and Dinan traded positions and one pitch later the Irish were out of the 4th inning. Schafer’s pitch was hit to Dinan at third, who prompted stepped on the base and relayed the throw to first for an inning ending doubleplay. Schafer allowed one run in the top half of the 5th and the Patriots finished that inning with 6 runs.

During the same five inning stretch, the Irish posted a matching 6 runs. The 1st inning opened with a Talentino double and was sacrificed to third on a Scott Carter bunt. He scored on a passed ball. Nate Ross opened the 2nd inning with a base on balls follows by a Jones single. Schafer sacrifice bunt advanced the runners into scoring position. Jordan Hill’s ground out to the shortstop allowed Ross to score. The 4th inning was the Irish’s most productive scoring three runs that started with a Jones single. With two outs, Andrew McKinley drew a walk. Jones scored on a wild pitch during Talentino’s at bat. Talentino then singled home McKinley on the next pitch. Talentino stole second base to put him into scoring position and then scored off of a Carter single for the third run of the inning. Dinan walked to open the 4th and scored on a Jones single to cap their scoring on the evening.

With the score tied at 6-6 in the 6th, the Patriots broke open the game with 6 runs on three hits, several intentional walks and a couple of Irish miscues. Unfortunately that broke the backs of the Irish and Schafer suffered the loss on the hill. The Irish have a chance to redeem themselves Friday evening traveling to Marysville to play in another conference game. They also have a conference DH on Saturday starting at noon against Westerville Central.

Marysville Bats Too Much For Varsity

Wednesday, May 4th ~ Marysville – With the April showers continuing steadily into May, the game against the Marysville Monarchs was supposed to be a home game for the Irish. But with the field unplayable, the venue changed to Marysville, as the teams would swap schedules. The swap worked in Marysville’s favor, as they stroked 10 hits, including 3 doubles and a homerun en route to an 11-6 victory over the Irish. The loss dropped the Irish record to 10-11 on the season, and evened up their OCC Cardinal record at 6-6.

Phillip Parrott started out on the mound, and never seemed to look comfortable and was saddled with the loss. Stevie Carter came on in relief and was able to keep the Marysville bats somewhat calmed in his effort. Defensively the Irish were sparked by a pair of identical double plays to third baseman Josh Nelsen who would step on third and throw across to first in both the 4th and 6th innings, with AJ Barnhardt making a great leaping catch of one of them, and coming back down on the bag to complete the double dip.

The Irish would get on the board in the top of the first with Chase Thompson getting on board with a single, and then advancing to second on a wild pitch, and would score on Tyler Flaherty’s double. That would be all the scoring for the Irish until the 6th. Zach Gerrasch would get things rolling with a walk, would be followed by a single by Jacob Nau. Christian Stamets would work a walk to load the bases and Barnhardt would deliver the 2 out single to score Gerrasch and Nau. In the top of the 7th, Scioto would send all 9 men to the plate building a rally. Thompson and Nelsen would both walk, and Gerrasch would deliver Thompson with a big ball to the gap. Nau would single for his second hit of the night scoring Nelsen, and Nick Keeley would double to score Gerrasch. Stamets would be hit by a pitch to once again load the bases. But the Marysville coach had seen enough and swapped out pitchers, and the rally ended there.

The Irish will possibly be back home on Thursday against the Celtics of Dublin Jerome, in a make-up of Monday’s rainout, again, weather permitting.

Varsity To Host Sectional Game

The OHSAA Sectional Baseball Tournament draw was completed May 1st, and the Dublin Scioto Irish will host their first round game of the Sectional Tournament. They will play the Lancaster Golden Gales in the Sectional Semi-Final on Monday May 9th, at 5:00. The winner of that game will travel to New Albany to take on the Eagles in the Sectional Championship game on Wednesday May 11th, also at 5:00.

Varsity Splits Pair At Eastwood Field

Saturday, April 30th ~ Niles – It was a long trip, and it started out a little rough for the Scioto varsity team, as they were shutout and held to only 3 hits in dropping the opener to the St Ignatius Wildcats 12-0. But after a brief break, they retook the field and threw a shutout of their own at the Canfield Cardinals, winning 4-0.

There was little that seemed to go the Irish’ way in game 1, as St Ignatius jumped out with 4 runs in the bottom of the second inning. In the bottom of the 3rd, they would bat around scoring 5 more times, expanding their lead to 9-0, and then would tack on 3 more in the bottom of the 4th, and shut down the Irish offense for the 12-0, run-rule shortened game. Matt Messick started on the mound and took the loss. Chase Thompson and Austin Mooney both singles in the game and Kris Simonton dropped a double in the gap in the 5th, and other than a pair of walks, there was not more offense to be had by the Irish as the Wildcat pitcher just overpowered the Irish hitters for the entire game.

The second game saw another shut out, but this time, Scioto came out on the positive end, and Mooney was the overpowering pitcher. He allowed only two singles and a walk, striking out 3 en route to picking up his third win of the year. He was economical with his pitches as well, as he threw only 85 in the 7 inning complete game effort. Mooney would get all the run support he needed in the top of the 4th when Simonton lead off with a double, and would score on an error by the Cardinal pitcher misplaying Dom Rosso’s ground ball. Rosso would steal second and move to third on Tyler Flaherty’s fielders choice ground out, and would scamper home on a wild pitch. In the top of the 5th, the Irish would tack on a pair of insurance runs moving the score to 4-0. Rosso, who had been hit by a pitch, would be driven home off the bat of Mooney. And Aaron Strausbaugh would cap the scoring, driving in Zach Gerrasch, who was running in place of Mooney, for the game's final run.

The Irish return home, and resume OCC Cardinal play as they host the Dublin Jerome Celtics Monday at 5.

Freshmen Irish Bitten by Tigers, Twice

April 30, 2010 ~ Pickerington – The Irish Freshmen traveled to Pickerington Central on Saturday to take part in a nonleague doubleheader, unfortunately they went home with two loses. During the day, the Irish bats were active at times collecting 12 runs and 20 hits. On the negative side of the ledger, they left 18 runners on base and committed 8 errors on the day. The weekend outcome was a 10-8 Game 1 loss and a 14-4 Game 2 loss.

Spencer Talentino opened the day with a single followed by walks to Scott Carter and Max O’Connell. With the bases loaded, Nate Ross hit to the Tigers’ third baseman who tried to force out Talentino at home. The catcher was unable to catch the ball and Talentino scored. Trevor Jones grounded out to the shortstop, but collected an RBI on the play. The Tigers countered with three runs in their half of the 1st and one in the 2nd to take a 4-2 lead from Talentino and the Irish. The top of the third started with singles from O’Connell and Bradley Dinan, then Ross and Jones were each hit by a pitch. Jake Schafer then singled in a run and Jordan Hill knocked in the third run of the inning to take a brief lead. The Tigers went on to score three in the 3rd and three more in the 4th to cap their scoring at 10 runs. The Irish scored three more runs, but were unable to catch up. From and offensive standpoint, Dinan led the way going 4-5 with four singles; Hill doubled and singled; Talentino and O’Connell collected two hits each; Jones doubled; and singles were collected by Andrew McKinley, Schafer and Ross. Talentino suffered the loss on the hill.

In Game 2, the Irish bats were quiet for the first two innings with the exception of a Dinan single that allowed him to extend his hitting streak to 13 games. The Tigers posted five runs during the same two innings and never looked back. The Irish did make the game close with four runs in the top of the 3rd that started with a Hill double. Talentino also doubled during his turn at bat knocking in Hill. Cater followed with a base on balls and then O’Connell reached on an error. Ross proceeded to single knocking in last two runs of the inning. The Irish bats were silenced for the remainder of the game with the exception of a second Talentino double and a second Dinan single. Ross suffered the pitching loss. He allowed only two earned runs during his time on the mound, but the team allowed 8 runs due to a series on critical miscues.

The Irish (5-8) will try to get back on the winning track by traveling to Jerome on Monday for a league game against the Celtics.

Celtics Beat Varsity In Tight One

Friday, April 29th ~ West Dublin – With the first pitch at 4:54, not only was most of the crowd late for the game, but neither team was quite ready to start either as no one scored in the first two innings. The host Celtics of Dublin Jerome would eventually win a back and forth slugfest that featured 18 hits between the two teams, by a final score of 8-7. The loss dropped the Irish record to 9-9 on the season, and 6-5 in the OCC Cardinal.

Phillip Parrott definitely got the memo of the early start as he was dominant early, not allowing a base runner through 2 2/3 innings. After Scioto jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the 3rd, the Celts would string together 4 straight two out base hits to put 3 runs on the board in the bottom of the inning, taking the lead 3-2. The Irish would respond with a pair in the top of the 4th to retake the lead 4-3, but Jerome would parlay 4 hits and a walk into 3 more runs in the bottom half, taking the advantage back for good. In the bottom of the 5th, they would add 2 unearned runs to stretch their lead to 8-6. Scioto would plate two runs in the top of the 7th, but leave the tying run in scoring position. For the second night in a row, the Irish would strand a critical number of runners in scoring position, including 3 of them at 3rd base.

Leading the way for the Irish offensively was Austin Mooney. He had a pair of base hits and two RBI’s, including a huge 2 out double off the left field fence in the top of the 3rd scoring Chase Thompson and Tyler Flaherty who had both gotten on base by being plunked by pitches. Aaron Strausbaugh would score in the 4th on a Celtic balk, and single by Thompson would chase home Dom Rosso who singled earlier in the inning. Flaherty would be awarded home plate on an interference call on the Celtic third baseman in the top of the 5th. Scioto would plate their final two runs in the top of the 7th, when Kris Simonton struck a two-out bases loaded single to score Strausbaugh, who was hit by a pitch for the second time on the night, and AJ Barnhardt who singled to center. Unfortunately, that is as close as Scioto would get.

Scioto packs their bags and hits the road for their longest roadie of the year, playing a tri-double-header in Niles, just outside of Youngstown on Saturday. They will open up at noon against the Wildcats of Cleveland St Ignatius, and then will play the night cap against the Canfield Cardinals. The games will take place at Eastwood Field, home of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, a class-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, playing their ball in the New York-Penn League.

Freshmen Back on Winning Track

Friday, April 29, 2011 ~ Dublin – Playing their first game in more than a week, the Irish Freshmen hosted the Dublin Jerome Celtics and sent them home with a loss. After losing four straight games, the 5-6 Irish defeated the Celtics 9-2 in 7 innings, bumping their league record to 3-4. Bradley Dinan started the game on the mound for the Irish and posted four innings with he and his team allowing only two unearned runs. Jacob Schafer relieved Dinan in the 5th and finished the game with three scoreless innings. During Schafer’s time on the hill, he forced six consecutive fly outs and then struck out the side in the 7th. His effort earned the victory on the hill, his first W of the year.

The Irish bats were held scoreless for the first three innings as they tried to overcome the strong left handed pitching of the Celtics Thomas Menker. Scott Carter, Max O’Connell and Jordan Hill each collected hits during the early innings, but the Irish were unable to cross home plate. With the Celtics scoring their two runs in the top of the 4th, it was time for the Irish offense to get on track. Dinan opened the bottom half of the 4th stanza with a single extending his hitting streak to 11 games. He was then forced out at second on a Nate Ross fielder’s choice. Trevor Jones came to the plate and ripped a double over the centerfielder’s head putting Ross safely at 3rd base. Schafer followed with an RBI single giving the Irish their first run.

For the Irish, the 5th was their breakout inning and they finally got the best of the Celtic pitcher scoring four runs. Spencer Talentino and O’Connell were each hit by pitch followed by a Dinan single to load the bases. Ross hit a grounder to the Celtic second baseman, who misplayed the ball and overthrew his first baseman allowing two runs to score. Jones followed with an RBI single and Schafer earned an RBI off a fielder’s choice.

The 6th inning was icing on the cake with another four runs posted off of a group of walks and hits by Talentino, O’Connell and Ross. All told, 8 Irish batters collected hits. Let’s hope the hitting and winning continues as they travel to Pickerington Central for a Saturday doubleheader starting at 10:00 AM.

Varisty Drops League Match-Up With Libety

Thursday, April 28th ~ Dublin – The Patriots of Olentangy Liberty returned to Dublin to play the second half of the home and home series, in what many assumed would be the sweep of the series. Someone forgot to tell the Patriots... Due to the amount of rain received making Liberty Field unplayable, the game was moved to Scioto, with Liberty as the home team. They came out hitting the ball hard right away, and this actually worked against them in the bottom of the first. With a runner on second, a line drive smoked to a diving Tyler Flaherty at third, doubled up the base runner at second. But that would only be a speed bump for Liberty, as they would pound out 12 hits on the way to their 12-9 victory. After only getting 3 hits against the Irish 48 hours earlier, the Patriots had base runners on in every inning but the 6th, when the wind and rain started to take over. The Irish bats weren’t silenced either as the Irish would get 12 hits of their own, and scored in every inning after the third. They would even take a brief lead in the top of the 4th. But the Irish pitching could not hold back the Liberty offensive onslaught, and the Irish offensive showing just wasn’t enough.

Aaron Strausbaugh drew the start, and would not make it out of the third inning. He surrendered 4 runs on 4 hits and a pair of walks in the second inning. A hit batsman on an 0-2 pitch in the third would be his undoing. Josh Nelsen came on in the 3rd and was able to get out of the jam in the 3rd, but he didn’t fare much better, allowing 5 runs on 3 hits and a pair of walks. Tom Ansley would give up 3 runs on 4 hits of his own in the 5th as the Liberty hitters continued to drive the ball into the gaps. It seemed like the ball just wasn’t bouncing right for the Irish on this rainy afternoon.

Scioto would get base runners on in each of the first three innings, but couldn’t string together enough hits to push any runs across, leaving runners stranded at third base in both the 2nd and 3rd innings. Those runs left on the bases would prove huge later on in the game. The Irish finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the 4th when after leadoff walks by Nick Keeley and Ansley, Christian Stamets laid down a sacrifice bunt which the Liberty catcher air mailed to right field, scoring Keeley and moving Ansley to third allowing Stamets to scamper into 2nd. A wild pitch would score Ansley, and then after a walk to Dom Rosso, Matt Messick would single up the middle to score Stamets. Sacrifice flies to center off the bats of Kris Simonton and Flaherty would score Rosso and Messick, who had moved first to third on a single by Chase Thompson. Like in the previous 2 innings, Thompson would be another runner stranded at third base.

In the top of the 5th, the Irish got started again with leadoff singles by Ansley and Stamets, but would only get one run, as Ansley scored on a sac fly by Messick, but Stamets would be stranded at 3rd for the 2nd time in the game, the 4th inning in a row an Irish base runner was left 90 feet away. Scioto would add two more runs in the 6th parlaying a leadoff HBP to Flaherty, an infield single by Mooney and a base hit by Keeley into their first run, leaving runners at 1st and 3rd. Stamets would be safe on an error by the third baseman scoring Mooney, but that would be all for the Irish in the 6th. In the top of the 7th, a Simonton double, paired with an error by the shortstop would plate the games final run, as the Irish fall short in their comeback bid.

The Irish will try and get back on the winning track as they travel to face the cross town rival Celtics of Dublin Jerome at 5:00 on Friday evening.

Varsity Dominates Liberty

Tuesday, April 26th ~ Dublin – The Dublin Scioto baseball team jumped on the scoreboard for a pair of runs in the bottom of the 1st inning and 2 more in the bottom of the 2nd all via the long ball as they powered their way to an 8-3 victory over the visiting Patriots of Olentangy Liberty. A dominating pitching performance along with near perfect defense and solid hitting was the recipe for the Irish’ 6th straight win, moving their record to 9-7 on the year.

Kris Simonton took control in the center of the diamond and was overpowering as he held the Patriots hitless for the first three innings. He became his own worst enemy in the 4th, when after getting two quick outs, he would walk the bases loaded. He gave up his only hit of the night, a 2 RBI single, but would get the next hitter to fly out to right to end the Liberty rally. When Simonton took to the mound in the next inning, he seemed to regain his control as he made quick work of the Patriot hitters in a 1-2-3 5th. A leadoff walk and an infield error would result in a pair of base runners in the 6th, but a called third strike would end that threat. Tyler Flaherty came on in the 7th to finish the game. It took him a little bit to shake off the rust since he hasn’t pitched in nearly two weeks. He would give up a lone run on 3 base hits, but worked his way out of the jam with 3 fly ball outs to close the book on the game. Simonton surrendered 2 runs on 1 base hit and 4 walks, striking out 5 in his 6 innings of work, as he picked up the W to even his record to 2-2.

In the bottom of the 1st, Flaherty would work a full count walk, and Austin Mooney would follow up with a drive over the left field fence for his first home run of the year. Not to be outdone, Dom Rosso took advantage of the prevailing winds as he too would launch a ball over the left field fence, bringing in Tom Ansley who had previously singled to left. In the 4th, the Irish would tack on 2 more runs: a sacrifice fly to center by Simonton would bring home Ansley who led off the inning with a walk, and Flaherty would fight off an outside pitch to right field singling in Rosso who too had singled. Scioto would score yet two more runs in the bottom of the 6th, as Rosso led off with this 3rd hit of the night, and Simo would double to the gap putting runners on second and third. Chase Thompson would drive an 0-2 pitch opposite side through the hole to plate the pair. The game would also see the return to the line-up of Nick Keeley who would get a single in his first at bat back.

The Irish are scheduled to travel to Powell to take on Liberty at their field on Wednesday, but with a 90% chance of rain, make sure to check in with the IBB Rain Line early and often!

Another Weekend Washed Out

If April showers bring May flowers, next month better be awfully pretty around here!!!

Varsity Completes Sweep Of Central

Thursday, April 21st ~ Dublin – The winning streak expanded to 5 games as the Scioto varsity baseball team won the second half of the home and home series with the Westerville Central Warhawks who entering the week were ranked #3 in central Ohio and #7 in the state. Another quality victory was the result of masterful pitching, and error free baseball. Once again, the bats didn’t make a lot of noise, but the offense took advantage of the opportunities provided by the Warhawks, as they eeked out another victory by a final score of 2-0. Irish pitching only allowed 1 run, and 11 hits over the 14 innings against the Warhawks. The win moved the Irish record to the good side of .500 for the first time since they were 2-1 back on April 1st, at 7-6, and their 5th straight league victory moved their conference record to 5-3.

Phillip Parrott and Aaron Strausbaugh put together great outings, holding the Warhawks to 5 hits on the night. Parrott only got into any real trouble in the 2nd inning as the Warhawks led off with singles to the left and right field foul lines putting runners at first and third with no outs. A sharp groundball to AJ Barnhardt at first kept the runner at third as he threw to Kris Simonton covering at short to keep the double play in order. But Parrott wouldn’t need the double play as he struck out the 9 hitter on a sick changeup, and would get the leadoff hitter to ground out weekly to first to end the threat. Parrott would run into a little trouble in the 6th, as he walked the first batter on 4 straight pitches. After a meeting on the mound with pitching coach Brent Marple, he battled back to get a quick out on a flair toward the right field foul line which was tracked down by Strausbaugh. The next hitter would push a single to right which Strausbaugh kept in front of him and quickly got the ball back into the cutoff man holding the lead runner at 2nd. A deep drive to left had Dom Rosso showing off his Willie Mays abilities as he caught the fly going away from the plate, which forced the runner back to second base. After a passed ball moved the runners both into scoring position, the Irish would intentionally walk the bases full to keep the force play set and would make the call to the bullpen (or right field anyway) to bring in Strausbaugh to the prevent any realdamage. Straus would deliver in a big way throwing three straight strikes, with a curveball, followed by a change-up which caught the Warhawk hitter off guard, and followed with another curveball freezing the hitter in place for the called third strike ending yet another threat. An easy 1-2-3 7th including yet another called third strike ended the game! The breaking stuff was really working for the Irish pitching, as Central hitters would take a called third strike to end the 5th, 6th and 7th innings. Parrott allowed only 5 hits and 3 walks, striking out 4 in his 5 2/3 innings of work notching his 3rd win. Strausbaugh pitched a hitless inning and 1/3, striking out 2 of the 4 batters he faced picking up his second save of the season in as many outings.

Offensively, the Irish would get all of the runs they needed in the 4th inning without even putting a ball in play. A leadoff walk to Tyler Flaherty would be erased on a unfortunate hit and run call, when the pitch sailed 6 inches over Austin Mooney’s head, and Fred was dead on the play. But Mooney would walk, and be followed by consecutive hit-by-pitches to Strausbaugh and Christian Stamets to load the bases. Barnhardt would then pick up the game-winning RBI as he too drew a walk scoring Mooney with the 1st run of the game. The Irish would put an insurance run on the board as Simonton led off with a swinging bunt that the Warhawk third baseman could not get out of his glove in time to make a throw. Chase Thompson would lay down a perfect sacrifice bunt, which the Central third baseman was ready to fire to throw him out, but no one covered the base. Simonton realizing no one was covering third scampered over sliding in just ahead of the diving third baseman’s tag, and a heady Thompson took advantage and moved up to second on the play. A fly ball to medium deep right by Flaherty was plenty deep enough to drive in Simonton for the games final run.

Playing error free baseball allowed Scioto to get out of a number of jams, and kept the pressure off the defense regularly, allowing the pitchers to pitch with confidence and throw strikes. Scioto is off tomorrow in recognition of Good Friday, and are scheduled to be back in action at Irish Field on Saturday, hosting another tri-double header. The Irish host Reynoldsburg Raiders and the Olentangy Orange Pioneers for a pair of games. Scioto will play each team, at 10 and at 3, and the other teams will play each other at 12:30 all dependant, of course, on Mother Nature.

Central Takes Another Game From Freshmen

Thursday, April 21st ~ Westerville – Westerville Central continued where they left off in the last two innings of Monday’s game against the Dublin Irish Freshmen. The Warhawks sent 9 batters to the plate in the first inning against Irish starter Jordan Hill and rocked him for six runs off of six hits. Those 1st inning runs turned out to be enough to win the game, but the game continued for six innings with a final score of 15-5. The loss is the 4th in a row to Westerville programs during the past two weeks. The Irish sent four pitchers to the hill in an attempt to quiet the Warhawk bats. Spencer Talentino relieved Hill and was then relieved by Trevor Jones. Jake Schafer was the last pitcher of the evening and he had success quieting the Warhawk offense during his 2 2/3 innings. Unfortunately, the damage had already been done.

The Irish Freshmen did post five runs off of an 11 hit evening but were unable to find that one big inning. In the 2nd inning, Jones doubled and then scored on Schafer’s single. The 3rd inning started with an Andrew McKinley single, but he was forced out at second on Talentino’s grounder. Max O’Connell then singled scoring Talentino followed by a Bradley Dinan single up the middle. Nate Ross ripped a single to left scoring O’Connell for a two run 3rd inning. With their backs against the wall, the Irish opened the 5th inning with singles from Talentino and Scott Carter. Both scored on a ground rule double off of the bat of Dinan. Eli Chaffin contributed the last hit of the game for the Irish in the 6th but was unable to score. With Dinan’s two base hits, he has been able to extend his hitting streak to 10 consecutive games.

The Freshmen (4-6) will try to get back on their winning ways by traveling to Olentangy Orange this weekend to play in a trifecta doubleheader with Orange and Reynoldsburg. Their games are scheduled for 10:00 and 12:30.

Varsity Beat Warhawks In Nail Biter

Monday, April 18th ~ Westerville – The Dublin Scioto varsity baseball team won its 4th game in a row, and all 4 games were OCC Cardinal games, moving their record in the conference to 4-3. They jumped out to score a run in the top of the 1st, added a pair of runs in the 4th, and with the blue collar performances on the mound, made it stand up. They held on to win 3-1 on the road against the #3 ranked Westerville Central Warhawks bringing their overall record to 7-7.

The Warhawks made Irish starter Kris Simonton dig deep into his bag of tricks as they got the leadoff batter on base in 5 of the 6 innings he pitched. He also got plenty of help from his defense who backed him up with error free baseball. Central would load the bases in the 1st inning, and Simonton responded with a strikeout to get out of that inning. A leadoff walk would be erased as Austin Mooney fired a 1-hop strike to Tyler Flaherty to catch the would be thief. In the third, the Warhawks started out with a runner on second with a leadoff double. He would be erased on a ground out to third baseman Dom Rosso who applied the tag and narrowly missed doubling up the batter. A deep fly ball chased Christian Stamets to the fence in left to make the catch, and a high pop up in foul to Rosso wrapped that inning. In the 4th, with runners on the corners, Mooney pounced on a bunt in front of home plate and gunned down the batter for the final out. The defensive highlight may have been in the 5th, with a Flaherty to Josh Nelsen to AJ Barnhardt 6-4-3 double play. Simonton would come out of the game in the 6th, after throwing more than 90 pitches en route while scattering 6 hits, and 5 walks, and battled his way out of several jams with 3 strikeouts picking up his first win of the season. Aaron Strausbaugh came on in the bottom of the 6th with a man on first and a 2-ball count on the hitter. He worked the count in his favor and then coaxed a soft fly ball to right to get the out. A groundout to Flaherty at third and a swinging strikeout would end the 6th. A leadoff double in the bottom of the 7th would come around to score a meaningless run as Straus would get two weak grounders and a wind blown fly out to Chase Thompson who filled the right center gap to end the game.

Offensively, the Irish got on the board in the top of the first when Simonton led off with a sharp single to left, he would move to second on a wild pitch, and after a Flaherty walk would go to third on a Mooney single. Strausbaugh would pick up the RBI with a groundball to the right side of the infield. In the 4th, Rosso would be safe on a ground ball misplayed by the Warhawk shortstop, he would take 2nd on a wild pitch. Mathew Messick lined a single to left, and unfortunately, Rosso would be cut down at the plate on a perfect relay throw from the third baseman, Messick taking second on the throw. Simonton would follow with a single, and Thompson would hit the right center gap with a shot deep enough to score both Messick and Simonton all the way from first. The Irish would make those three runs stand up with the rock solid defense and quality pitching.

Wednesday is the next time to catch the Irish in action as they play host to the Warhawks to wrap up the series with Central.

Frosh Fall To Warhawks

Monday, April 18th ~ Irish Field of Dreams - One tough frame proved to be the difference as the Irish freshman fell to Westerville Central. Entering the sixth inning with a 3-2 lead, the Irish gave up 8 runs. The Warhawks tacked on two more in the 7th for the final margin of 12-3.

Westerville Central jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to two hits and one Irish error. In the bottom of the inning, the Irish cut the lead in half. Spencer Talentino led off with a sharply struck ball down the left field line, but was cut down on a bang-bang play at second while trying to stretch a single into a double. Scott Carter followed with a single to center and stole second. Max O’Connell grounded to second to advance Carter, who later scored on an error. Scioto plated two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-2 lead. Andrew McKinley led off with a walk. He was forced at second on a Talentino grounder, but slid hard enough to prevent a relay to first. The Warhawks tried a pitchout, but the catcher’s throw was wide and got past the second baseman, allowing Talentino to advance to third. Carter singled to right to score the runner. He stole second and following an O'Connell walk, Bradley Dinan doubled in Carter. Nate Ross was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With the Irish poised to break the game open, Trevor Jones hit a smash right back to the pitcher, who made a nice stop in order to start a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning.

The Irish threatened again in the fourth when Jake Schafer lined a one out single to left center and advanced to second with a steal and to third on a passed ball. But, he was stranded. The first two batters reached in the bottom of the fifth and were sacrificed into scoring position by Nate Ross. However, the next two batters struck out swinging.

Starting pitcher Dinan settled in nicely after the first inning and yielded only one more hit – a wind aided bloop single to shallow centerfield – until giving up a single with one out in the sixth. Irish relievers Ross and Schafer gave up four hits between them and five Irish errors allowed the Warhawks to send 12 men to the plate.

Eight different Warhawks ended up with base hits and all nine starters reached base safely. They totaled 11 hits. The Irish were led at the plate by Carter and Dinan, with two hits apiece. Talentino and Schafer chipped in hits as well, which gave the Irish six for the game.

These two teams are scheduled to square off again at Highlands Park in Westerville on Wednesday.

Battle Of Dublin Washed Out

No rescheduled date has been discussed.

Varsity Storms Back To Beat Warriors

Friday, April 15th ~ Dublin – Westerville North jumped out to a 5 run lead in the top of the 1st inning and appeared set to sweep the series with Scioto, until the Irish bats stormed back along with the rain, scoring 9 runs in the 6th inning to take the lead. They were able to hold on to take the 12-10 victory. Coach Patrick Elias smiled afterward and stated “This win was a product of senior leadership, plain and simple.” The Irish didn’t play stellar defense, nor did they pitch particularly effectively, didn’t run the bases perfectly. But they took a giant punch to the gut, stood their ground, and battled back, and eventually would take the win. The victory moves their record to 6-7 on the year, and evens up their conference record to 3-3.

Josh Nelsen started in the bump, and had a little trouble getting the ball down in the first inning giving up 5 runs, including a home run to left by Warrior third baseman Jake Miller. Nelsen would settle into a nice rhythm as he pitched a scoreless 2nd and 3rd, including 2 nasty curveball strikeouts to end the 3rd. He would run out of gas in the top of the 4th, and would give way to Tom Ansley. Ansley was for the most part effective in his two innings, as he only allowed a single unearned run on a pair of singles and a wild pitch in the 5th. Austin Mooney would come on in the 6th, and had a little trouble shaking off the rust and finding the zone. He allowed 4 runs, the big blow, a 3 run home run off the bat of Miller, his second of the game. But handed a large cushion, he was able to shut down the Warriors and pick up the W, taking his record to 2-0.

After surrendering 5 runs in the top of the first inning, instead of rolling over, the Irish would answer right back with a pair of runs of their own to start chipping on the lead. Kris Simonton lead off with a double, and would move to third on a Chase Thompson fielder’s choice, and would come around to score on a Tyler Flaherty sacrifice fly to right field. But the Irish weren’t done. 3 straight singles by Mooney, AJ Barnhardt and Stevie Carter would load the bases, and Christian Stamets would deliver a key 2 out base hit to drive home Mooney, but the Irish ran into the third out at third base killing the rally. The score would remain 5-2 until the bottom of the 4th. Stamets led off with a single, followed by a single to Ansley, and a sacrifice bunt by Matt Messick put both runners in scoring position. An intentional walk to Simo would load the bases yet again. After an infield pop up, Flaherty would single to score Stamets moving the score to 5-3.

After allowing the single runs in the top of the 5th and 6th moving the score to 7-3, the Irish bats and the rain would both explode. With the rain moving every direction, and sometimes sideways, the Irish would bat around for the third time in the last 10 innings stroking 8 hits plating 9 runs to jump into the lead. Dom Rosso would lead off the inning and the hit parade with a single. Consecutive singles by Messick, Simo, Thompson, Flaherty and Mooney would score 3 runs and keep the bases loaded. After a pair of strikeouts, Stamets would take a fastball between the shoulder blades for the tough RBI and the tying run. Rosso would pick up his second single of the inning driving in he eventual game-winning RBI. A dropped third strike Messick would get to the screen allowing another run, and Messick to get to first safely. Simonton would come to the plate with the bases still loaded, however, his RBI’s would be taken away from him. A passed ball would score Zach Gerrasch, and a wild pitch would score Rosso, and a throwing error by the Warrior catcher would allow Messick to score the final run of the inning. Simonton would then drop in a bases empty single for the final Irish hit of the game.

Despite giving up a pair of errors, the Irish defense helped themselves out of a couple of situations with solid plays. With runners on first and second, simple ground balls to Flaherty at third would allow him to step on the bag and get out of both the 2nd and 4th innings. In the 4th, Ansley would cut down the lead runner on a bunt attempt, turning and firing a strike to Simo at second base. In the 6th, Thompson, now catching, would throw behind a runner at first base picking him off of the base paths. And in the 7th, Thompson would also cover a tough bunt up the middle cutting down the hitter.

Saturday’s action will see the Battle of Dublin, with Scioto hosting their cross town rivals the Celtics of Jerome and the Rocks of Coffman. Game 1 - 10:00 am, Scioto vs Coffman; Game 2 - 12:30 pm, Coffman vs Jerome; Game 3 – 3:00 pm, Jerome vs Scioto.

Warriors Drop JV For Second Time

Friday, April 15th ~ Westerville – The first time the JV teams from Scioto and North matched up, the Warriors won a slugfest. This time, the Irish couldn’t get the offense started as they never had more than 1 hit in a inning, dropping the game by a final count of 6-1

Chance Dummitt started the game for the Irish and pitched 4 2/3 innings, and taking the loss. Austin Troyer came on to get the final out of the 5th. Tim Shadoan would come on and pitch a scoreless 6th.

In the top of the 7th, Nate Gastaldo was hit by a pitch, Taylor Dyson would walk and Shadoan would get a single to drive in Dummitt, but that would be all the offense Scioto could muster. Shadoan was the only Scioto hitter to notch more than 1 base hit. Gastaldo and Dyson would each have a double, and Adam Padovan, Nathan Callender and Dummitt would chip in with singles, and Padovan would add a stolen base.

With the cancellation of the Battle of Dublin, the Irish are in action on Monday as they host the Warhawks of Westerville Central.

Warriors Too Much For Irish Freshmen, Again

Friday, April 15th, ~ Westerville – The Dublin Scioto Irish Freshmen traveled to the Westerville North Warriors’ home field and were sent home with an 11-1 loss. That makes two losses in a row to the Warriors and puts the Irish at 4-4 on the year and 2-2 in their OCC Division. The Irish opened the game with a run in the first that was set up by a game opening base on balls by Spencer Talentino. Talentino stole second base and was sacrifice bunted to third by Scott Carter. Bradley Dinan ripped a double down the right field line to score Talentino and collect the RBI. That turned out to be the only hit collected by the Irish during the evening.

Talentino started the game on the mound and held the Warriors scoreless in the first inning thanks to a couple of web gems by Dinan at shortstop and Trevor Jones at first base. Unfortunately though, the Warrior bats got warmed up in the second when they sent 10 batters to the plate and collected six runs off of four hits and a couple of errors. The third inning had a similar outcome with the Warriors plating four more runs using 10 hitters. Jones relieved Talentino in the bottom of the third and was able to turn off the spigot. Jones and his Irish teammates allowed one more run in the fourth, which gave the Warriors their 10 run margin and the game ended after the top of the 5th.

The Irish Freshmen travel to Dublin Coffman on Saturday to take part in the Freshmen version of the Battle of Dublin. Their first game is against Coffman at 10:00 followed immediately after at 12:30 against Jerome. Good Luck Gentlemen.

Varsity Sweep Pair From Wildcats

Thursday, April 14th ~ Westerville – The Irish bats were hot Thursday night, and they strung together plenty of hits, and then some, as they swept the series against the Wildcats of Westerville South breaking out of their losing streak in a big way. First they completed the game that was suspended due to darkness on Friday, winning 10-9. Then the Irish continued their hot hitting, pounding out 16 hits in the night cap, scoring 15 runs, in winning in a run rule shortened game by a final score of 15-3.

Game 1 was just an appetizer. The Wildcats scored a run in the top of the 8th to take a temporary 9-8 lead. But that lead would be short lived as the Irish bounced back in the bottom of the 8th. Austin Mooney got the ball rolling with a walk. Christian Stamets laid down a sacrifice bunt in an attempt to move the Mooney up in to scoring position, but in fielding the ball, the pitcher slipped and launched his throw down the right field line, advancing Mooney to 3rd and Stamets to 2nd both into scoring position. South intentionally walked AJ Barnhardt to load the bases setting up the force play at any base. Matt Messick would then lace a single over the heads of the drawn in infield scoring Money with the tying run. Chase Thompson would come up to the plate and stroke a fly ball to shallow left field, but it was plenty deep to score Stamets with the game winning run.

After a brief intermission the main course for the evening, game 2, started with the Irish bats fairly quiet as they went scoreless in the first two innings. In the bottom of the second, the Wildcats would take a 1 run lead after an infield error, a wild pitch and a single plated their lone run. In the top of the third the Irish would bat around; a pair of errors and a pair of stolen bases put Dom Rosso and Kris Simonton into scoring position. A single by Thompson scored Rosso, and a single by Tyler Flaherty plated Simonton. A sacrifice fly to left would score Thompson, and then consecutive 2 out singles by Stevie Carter, Stamets and Messick would each drive in another run, making the score 6-1 in favor of the Irish. The Wildcats would score a couple of two out runs in the bottom of the third to pull back to 6-3, but that is as close as they would get. In the top of the 4th Thompson, who had doubled, would score on a Mooney single to right. In the top of the 5th, the Irish put the game away sending 13 men to the plate in batting around for the second time in the game. Every Irish starter got a hit in the inning except for Mooney and Rosso who both drew walks. The Irish would plate 8 runs to run the lead to 15-3. After a leadoff walk in the bottom of the 5th, the Wildcats would go weakly with a ground out, a foul out to Mooney, and a major league pop up on the infield to end the game. Defensively, the Irish turned a nice Fred to Simo to Barnhardt double play to end the first game. Rosso added another outfield assist to his resume, doubling up a runner at first in the bottom of the third, and Mooney cut down a runner who had strayed too far from second with a bullet to Simonton.

Flaherty picked up on the mound in game 1 where he left off the game last Friday. His own error on a pick off attempt would lead to an unearned run, before the offense would win the game in the bottom of the 8th, picking up his first win of the season. In game 2, Phillip Parrot was dominant, keeping the Wildcat hitters off balance the entire game. He only allowed 3 unearned runs, walking 2 and 2 hit batters. Parrott would scatter 3 hits on the night, and struck out 4 hitters in his complete game victory, moving his record to 2-1 on the year.

The next game for Scioto is at home on Friday night at 5:00, as the Warriors from Westerville North come to Irish field, for the second and final game of their series. Pending weather, Saturday is the battle of Dublin, with Scioto hosting Jerome and Coffman in the tri-double header. The schedule for Saturday is as follows: Game 1 - 10:00 am, Scioto vs Coffman; Game 2 - 12:30 pm, Coffman vs Jerome; Game 3 – 3:00 pm, Jerome vs Scioto.

Brian Cook took to the mound for the Irish with 5 good innings with 6 strike outs in picking up his second win of the season, and second win against Westerville South as well. Nolan Wehner comes into relieve for the last 2 innings.

In the 2nd inning, Nathan Callendar started out with a base hit. Nate Gastaldo followed with a base hit scoring Callendar. Wehner had a sacrifice bunt that moved Gastaldo to 3rd. Adam Podovan walks. Vogel gets on base with a hit over 2nd baseman and Dummitt's base knock down 1st base line, moved Vogel to 3rd. An error scored Vogel, moving Dummitt to 3rd, finally a base hit by Cook scored Dummitt to cap the scoring, and the Irish hold on to win!!

Warriors Double Up On Varsity

Wednesday, April 13th ~ Westerville – Unearned runs were the mode of the evening for the Scioto Irish and the Westerville North Warriors as they chalked up a combined total of 5 errors leading to only 1 earned run allowed by each team. Both teams scored in only one inning, but the Warriors made the most of the mess, as they plated 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd. The Irish would battle back with a pair in the top of the 4th, but that would be all of the scoring for the evening, as North went on to win the OCC Cardinal match-up by the final tally of 4-2.

Kris Simonton was handed the ball tonight, and pitched 4 strong innings, but once again was let down by his defense. Simo stranded a pair of runners in the 1st, and was able to work out of a bases loaded jam in the 2nd with no harm. A pair of errors led to 3 unearned runs (plus 1 earned) in the third which proved to be the difference of the game. Josh Nelsen came on in the bottom of the 5th and closed the door on the Warriors, holding them to only 2 base runners in his 2 innings of work.

The Irish picked up their runs in the top of the 4th. Tyler Flaherty led off with a single, AJ Barnhardt was safe when the North left fielder misplayed his line drive, and a single by Christian Stamets loaded the bases. A groundout by Nick Berg drove in the first run, and a single by Matt Messick drove in the final run for the Irish. The Irish offense got started in each of the last 3 innings, but they couldn’t finish. Flaherty doubled but was stranded at second by a pair of strikeouts. Stamets was hit by a pitch, stole second and then went to third on a wild pitch with still nobody out, however, he too would not score. And in the 7th Simonton would draw a leadoff walk, but then would be doubled up on the next pitch.

Despite the 3 errors, there were some bright spots defensively for Scioto. Stevie Carter made a nice running catch in center field to end a rally in the first, and Chase Thompson laid out to catch a foul pop in the third, in addition to covering two bunts.

The Irish try to get back on the winning track on Thursday when they head back to Westerville, to complete the game that was started on Friday the 8th, and was suspended in the top of the 8th. They will then play the game that was rained out from Monday.

JV Loses To Westerville North

Wednesday, April 13th ~ Dublin Irish Field – The JV Irish drop an OCC Cardinal matchup to Westerville North 10-6, as the Irish were just unable to overcome Westerville's hitting.

The bats got going for the Irish in the 2nd inning. Nate Gastaldo and Will Styers each walk to set up scoring for Taylor Dyson's base hit. Tim Shadoan gets a base hit next, scoring Styers. In the 3rd inning, Chance Dummitt started things off big with a triple, then scored on a wild pitch. Up next, Brian Cook doubled to centerfield. Nathan Callendar bunted to score Cook. The Irish try to rally in the 7th with another triple by Dummitt over centerfielder's head. Cook followed up with another double to score Dummitt. The Irish just couldn't come up with anymore.

The Irish are in action again Thursday against Westerville South. Let's go Irish!!

Freshmen Fall to Westerville North

Wednesday, April 13th, ~ Dublin Irish Field of Dreams – The Dublin Scioto Irish freshmen hosted the Westerville North Warriors tonight and were soundly defeated 15-1 by their guests. The Warriors leadoff batter singled off of Irish starter Bradley Dinan that led to a six run first inning. The Warriors batted the entire lineup in the first collecting three hits and getting assistance from three Irish errors. Trevor Jones stopped the damage by catching a based loaded line drive down the first base line and then doubled up the runner on first. With a six run deficit, the Irish took their turn at bat with three consecutive game opening singles off of the bats of Spencer Talentino, Scott Carter and Dinan. With those three consecutive hits, the Irish were only able to respond with one run and the inning ended 6-1.

The second and third innings were similar to the first as the Warriors bats stayed hot and the Irish gloves stayed cold. Westerville North scored two runs in the 2nd and seven in the 3rd forcing Dinan to vacate the mound. During the two inning nine run stretch, they collected 8 additional hits and were aided by four fielding miscues. Dinan was relieved by Nate Ross, who finished the third and pitched a scoreless 4th inning. Jones relieved Ross and pitched a scoreless 5th but the damage had already been done.

The Irish were only able to collect three additional hits during the remainder of the game. Jones doubled to start the 2nd inning, but couldn’t be advanced. Dinan singled in the 3rd for his second hit of the game and that inning ended with him stranded at third base. Jake Schafer singled with two outs in the 4th and was also unable to advance into scoring position. The 4-3 Irish travel to Westerville North on Friday with the hopes of avenging their first division loss.

Varsity Splits Double Header With Newark

Saturday, April 9th ~ Newark – It was a tale of two very different games. In the first game, the Irish could seemingly do anything they wanted successfully, winning 13-3. In game 2, it was as if they had left all of their good plays on the field in the first game, as they found themselves fighting from behind all game and just couldn’t make it over the hump, dropping the nightcap 13-7.

GAME #1) The Irish jumped off to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a leadoff walk to Kris Simonton, an RBI double by Chase Thompson, a sac bunt by Tyler Flaherty and a groundout RBI by Austin Mooney. They would score 4 runs in the second when AJ Barnhardt reached base on a error by the Newark 2nd baseman, walks to Brian Cook and Matt Messick. Simonton would drive in Barnhardt and Cook with a 2 run single. Chase Thompson would plate another run with an RBI groundout. Another Newark error would lead to the 4th and final run of the inning. The Irish would put another 4 spot on the board in the 3rd. A double by Aaron Strausbaugh, a single by Christian Stamets and an RBI Sac fly by Cook would lead to the first run of the inning. Matt Messick would lace a double to off the right field fence to score another run. The 2nd single of the game by Simo would keep the inning alive and Thompson would deliver the big blow with his second double of the game which plated the 3rd and 4th runs of the inning.

The Irish would cap the scoring for the game with a 3 run 4th inning. A single by Austin Mooney would start the inning, followed by a walk to Barnhardt and a 310 foot single by Dom Rosso would allow Mooney to score. Messick would pick up his 2nd RBI of the game with a single, and another Wildcat error would plate the 13th and final run for the Dublin nine. The offense was led by Chase Thompson with 2 doubles and 4 RBIs, Simo with 2 singles and 2 RBIs and frosh sensation Matt Messick playing in only is 2nd varsity game with a single, a double and 2 RBIs.

Aaron Strausbaugh got the win on the mound, evening his record at 1-1. He went the distance in the 5 inning run-rule game, scattering 5 hits and allowing only 1 earned run in the 13-3 Irish victory.

GAME #2) AJ Barnhardt led the way at the plate in game 2 with 3 hits, including a double and a pair of RBIs. Austin Mooney added a pair of singles, and no other Irish hitter had more than 1 hit. Mathew Messick took to the mound with his first varsity start, and the Wildcats rudely welcomed him to the varsity level. Messick would allow 5 runs on 8 hits, walking 3 in his 2 2/3 innings of work, and would be saddled with the loss. Nolan Wehner came on in the 3rd and only threw two pitches before Austin Mooney would gun down a would be base stealer at 2nd to end the threat. The rest of the way, Wehner, Chase Thompson and Tom Ansley would each strike out a batter in their innings of work.

The top of the 1st inning saw only Tyler Flaherty reach base as he was hit by a pitch. The Wildcat hitters would take advantage of freshman Messick’s first varsity start, pounding out 5 runs on 5 hits to put the Irish in a big hole. The Irish would plate a lone run in the top of he 2nd as Aaron Strausbaugh was safe on an error, stole 2nd, went to third on Barnhart’s double, and would score on Christian Stamets’ fielder’s choice. In the third, Scioto would plate 3 runs to cut the Wildcats lead to 5-4, on a walk to Kris Simonton, a single by Thompson (driving home Simo), Mooney would drive home Thompson, and Flaherty, who reached on an error, would score on a single by Barnhardt. After Newark pushed ahead by a count of 8-4, the Irish would cut their lead to 8-7, scoring 3 runs in the top of the 5th. Flaherty led off with a walk, Mooney singled, moving Fred to third, who then scored on a Sac fly by Strausbaugh. A Barnhardt single would chase Mooney home, and Wehner would drive home Barnhardt with the final run on a fielder’s choice. Unfortunately, that would be all she wrote for the Irish offense, and Newark added 5 more in the bottom of the 5th to cap the scoring.

Scioto will play again Monday (weather permitting) as they travel to Westerville South. They will first resume play in the game started Friday night, that was suspended due to darkness with the score tied at 8 after 7 innings. Shortly thereafter, they will play the regularly scheduled game.

Freshmen Split with the Jerome In Non-League Doubleheader

Saturday, April 9th, ~ Dublin Irish Field of Dreams – The Scioto Irish Freshmen hosted the Dublin Jerome Celtics Saturday in a non-league twin bill and split the games with their guests. Jerome won the opener behind a strong pitching performance from Graham Donhoe to post a 7-1 victory. Jordan Hill started the second game on the mound for the Irish and returned the favor by posting his own strong pitching performance. He was aided by his teammates, as they combined for 10 hits and routed the Celtics 15-5.

In Game 1, the Celtics pitcher was able to scatter five Irish hits over seven innings and only allow one run in the 6th inning. The hits were posted by Max O’Connell with two hits, Bradley Dinan, Trevor Jones and Spencer Talentino. Talentino started the game on the mound and picked up the loss by allowing four runs in the first three innings. He was relieved by Nate Ross in the 3rd inning, who pitched through the end of the 6th. Trevor Jones came in and pitched a shutout 7th inning.

In game 2, Jordan Hill allowed a lone run in the top of the first off of two Celtic hits, and then his teammates took over with their bats. The offense posted six runs in the first inning and 9 runs in the second inning to open a 15 -1 lead. The six first inning runs all came with two outs as the Irish sent 12 batters to the plate. Hits were collected by O’Connell, Jake Schafer, Ross, Jones and Talentino. The second inning was even stronger as 13 batters made a plate appearance collecting five hits from Jones, Andrew McKinley, Talentino, Dinan and Ross along with a series of base on balls. Hill pitched four complete innings facing 17 batters and allowing only one run on four hits. He fanned four Celtic hitters before giving up the mound to Ross to close the game.

Dinan and O’Connell both hit safely in each game to extend their hitting streaks to six games. Their next opportunity to continue the streak will be Wednesday as they host Westerville North in a league game at home.

Varsity Game Called After 7 Due To Darkness

Friday, April 8th ~ Dublin – Once again, the Irish take the field against the Westerville South Wildcats on a night with weather more suited for Friday night football than baseball, which seems to be the ongoing theme this season. Trying to break a 4 game losing streak the Irish jumped out to a 4 run lead in the bottom of the 1st inning. After allowing a pair of runs in the top of the 2nd, the Irish would respond and push their lead to 5-2. South would battle back and take the lead 6 to 5. Scioto scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th to go back in front, just to have South respond with a pair of their own in the top of the 7th to retake the lead. The Irish would plate a lone run to tie it up in the bottom of the 7th. In the 7th inning, both teams would intentionally walk the bases loaded to set up force outs at any base, and the strategy worked, as both teams would leave the bases loaded. With the score tied at 8 and the darkness setting in, the umpires and coaches got together and called the game due to darkness. The game will be resumed in the top of the 8th in Westerville on Monday when the teams are scheduled to play the second game in the series.

Josh Nelsen took the ball on the bump for the Irish, and pitched into the 5th inning. After only allowing a single earned run, and striking out 3 along the way, Nelsen appeared to simply run out of gas in the top of the 5th as he walked the first two batters on 8 straight, and couldn’t throw a strike to the third hitter. The call to the bullpen saw Tyler Flaherty come in to pitch in the middle of the at bat to the Westerville catcher. With 3 strikeouts of his own in his three innings of work, Flaherty would leave the bases loaded in the 7th.

Scioto jumped on Westerville pitching in the 1st inning, scoring 4 runs before having a batter retired. Two hit batsmen to Stevie Carter and Aaron Strausbaugh started the outburst. Consecutive singles to Kris Simonton, Flaherty, Austin Mooney and Christian Stamets would continue the onslaught. AJ Barnhardt drew a bases loaded walk to drive in the 4th and final run of the inning. In the third, Simonton would single and eventually score on a wild pitch. In the 6th, Mooney would have his second 2 RBI hit of the night scoring Carter and Simonton who both singled. Barnhardt would draw his 4th walk of the game to lead off the 7th, and would later score on an infield groundout.

The Irish will try and break their losing streak in Newark in Saturday against another set of Wildcats, in a doubleheader starting at noon.

JV Come From Behind To Beat South 14-9

Friday, April 8th ~ Westerville – The JV Irish bounce back from loss to North in OCC Cardinal tilt, beating Westerville South 14-9. After falling behind by scores of 5 to 2, and 8-3, the Irish stormed back with 7 runs in the 3rd inning to take the lead 10-8. They would expand that lead to 14-8, before allowing a single run in the bottom of the 5th making the score 14-9, which would be the eventual final score.

Brian Cook started the game for the Irish pitching 5 innings and striking out a pair and picked up his first win of the year. Austin Troyer came on in the 6th inning and pitched 2 scoreless innings to close out the game.

In the top of the first the Irish jumped on the scoreboard right away. Cook singled and would move to second on an error off the bat of Chase Dummitt. He would steal third and scored on a passed ball. Nathan Callender would follow with a double driving in Dummitt. Braves Complete Sweep Of Varsity

Wednesday, April 6th ~ Dublin – No one was hurt, and the weather appears to have finally broken for the better… That’s about it for the good news. The bats of the Olentangy Braves proved to be too much for the Irish at a windswept Irish Field, as they pounded out 10 hits. Those ten hits included 5 extra base hits; 3 doubles a triple and a homerun. The Braves completed the two game home-and-home series sweep of the Irish by a score of 7-2, moving to 2-0 in the OCC Cardinal Conference as the Irish drop to 0-2 in the league and 2-5 on the year. The Braves jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first, the Irish quickly answered with a run in the bottom of the inning. The teams would exchange goose eggs on the scoreboard until the top of the 5th when the Braves would push across another pair of runs, and then get 3 more in the top of the 6th. Scioto would add a lone tally in the bottom of the 7th to close out the scoring.

Phillip Parrot got the start and after giving up a 2 run home run in the top of the 1st inning, really settled into a nice rhythm, keeping the Braves off the scoreboard for the next 3 innings. After a leadoff single, a couple of errors, and a pair of wild pitches his night was done after 4 2/3 innings, even though he finished striking out his last hitter, for his third K of the evening. Josh Nelsen came on in the 5th, threw only 3 pitches and got a weak comebacker to end the inning. Tyler Flaherty came on in the 6th and worked the final two innings.

At the dish Kris Simonton’s bat remained red hot as he had two doubles and scored both of the Scioto runs. Flaherty was also on fire with a double and a triple, and a pair of RBI’s plating Simonton both times. The only other hit for the Irish was a lead off single by Chase Thompson in the bottom of the 3rd, but he would not score.

The Irish are back in action Friday night hosting Westerville South in another Cardinal game match-up, before traveling to Newark for a double header on Saturday.

The weather cooperated and the Irish got the bats moving. In the 1st inning, Matthew Messick started things off with a base hit, Dummitt doubled moving Messick to 3rd. Nate Gastaldo’s fielder's choice scored Messick. Tim Shadoan tripled in the 2nd scoring Taylor Dyson. Olentangy changed pitchers in the 4th and the hits kept coming for the Irish. A great way to get a win! Irish will be back in action on Friday against Westerville South on the road.

Freshmen Post Third Win in a Row

Wednesday, April 6th ~ Dublin – The Scioto Irish Freshmen hosted the Olentangy Braves for their second league game, and posted a 7-6 victory for their third win in a row. Along with the three game winning streak, the Freshmen have also started a couple of noteworthy streaks in their young high school careers. Through four games this season the Irish have scored during their first at bat, posting three runs in those first innings in each of the past two games. Spencer Talentino, Bradley Dinan and Max O’Connell have also collected base hits during each game.

Dinan started his second game on the mound and posted four innings allowing only one earned run and picking up the win in the process. Jacob Schafer pitched the last three innings, also allowing only one earned run and collecting his first save of the season. The pitching duo forced the Braves into 11 infield ground balls, 9 fly balls and four strikeouts. Trevor Jones collected the web gem of the evening by snatching a line drive shot down the first base line with a diving catch. The Braves did strike for five runs in the second inning with four being unearned runs due to a fielding miscue with two outs.

The Irish offensive output started in the bottom of the first inning with a Talentino leadoff walk followed by a stolen base. Dinan followed with a double to right field scoring Talentino. O’Connell stepped to the plate and hit a two strike single to left field scoring Dinan. After an O’Connell stolen base, Schafer struck for a single to left scoring O’Connell. After falling behind in the top of the second, the Irish struck for another run that started with a line drive off of Andrew McKinley’s bat. After a stolen base, he was knocked home off a Talentino single. With the Irish down 5-4 going into the bottom of the fourth, they struck again for the final three runs of the game. The inning started with a Jordan Hill walk, followed by a Jones single. McKinley put the ball in play and Jones scored when the Braves third baseman attempted to get Jones out at home plate. Talentino walked to load the bases followed by a Scott Carter single knocking in Jones. Dinan collected the last RBI of the game with a ground out to shortstop.

The Irish take their winning streak on the road Friday to Westerville South High School beginning at 5:00.

Varsity Fall To Braves In League Opener

Tuesday, April 5th ~ Lewis Center – Once again, Mother Nature and her elements played a big part in the game as the Irish and Braves saw almost the entire weather gamut: there was sun, rain, snow, and of course, wind. Scioto was unable to overcome the elements dropping the OCC Cardinal tilt to the Braves by a final score of 10-6. The wind made it tough on the fans who were forced to huddle together in the stands or stand in the protection of the bleachers out of the wind. But at least there was plenty of hot chocolate and coffee avail at the concession stand to keep them warm… Oh wait... Once again, the Irish could not get the key base hit early, leaving a runner at 3rd base in both of the first two innings. But they continued to battle, in the back and forth contest, and after falling behind 1-0, took the lead with 3 runs in the top of the 3rd. The Braves tied the game with a pair of runs of their own in the 3rd, but the Irish again took the lead plating a single run in the 5th. After falling behind in the bottom of the 5th, the Irish continued fighting, plating single runs n the top of the 6th and 7th, but it was just not enough.

Kris Simonton made his pitching debut on Tuesday night and was effective through 4 innings only allowing 3 unearned runs, and striking out 7. Fatigue set in and he allowed a couple of base hits to lead off the bottom of the 5th, and the Braves would eventually plate 4 runs, to start to pull away. Austin Mooney came on in the bottom of the 6th to relieve, and the Braves would tack on 3 insurance runs.

Simonton also led the way at the plate helping out his own cause as he had 2 base hits and an RBI, including a double deep off the left field fence. Aaron Strausbaugh also had a pair of hits. The Irish started their scoring bringing home 3 runs in the top of the 3rd when they strung together 4 singles by Chase Thompson, Strausbaugh, Simonton and Mooney. In the 5th, Simonton doubled, was moved to third on a single by Tyler Flaherty and would score on a sacrifice fly by Mooney. In the 6th, Christian Stamets would lead off with walk, moved to second on a ground out, and scored on a two-out single to right by Stevie Carter. In the 7th, Simonton had a leadoff walk, and moved to second on a hit batter, and would score on a two-out base hit by Stamets to cap the scoring.

The Irish return to the friendly confines of Irish Field on Wednesday, taking on these same Olentangy Braves. The weather should be warmer, and the World Famous Award Winning concession stand will be open!

JV Fall To Braves

Tuesday, April 5th ~ Dublin – Sun, Snow and Cold against Olentangy. The Irish go down to a tough Olentangy team 7-3. Scioto had to fight through the cold and sun but was not able to overcome the Braves.

Brayden Pfeiffer started out on the mound and went 3 innings and had 3 strikeouts. Austin Troyer and Riley Bush came in to relieve and pitched 2 solid innings each.

Offensively, it took awhile to get the bats going for the Irish. Olentangy changed pitchers and the bats got hot in the 5th inning. Nathan Callendar walked to start off the 5 inning, Tim Shadoan doubled down the 1st base line. Next up, Matthew Messick singled moving up Shadoan and Callendar. Two bad throws scored Callendar and Shadoan, moving Messick to 3rd base. Chance Dummitt grounded out and scored Messick. Will Styers singled up the middle and Nathan Callendar had a huge double out to left field.

The Irish will meet Olentangy again on Wednesday. Let's get the bats going early!!

Freshmen Post Second Win in a Row

Tuesday, April 5th ~ Lewis Center – The Freshmen Irish had a change in plans tonight and traveled to the Olentangy Braves’ field because their field wasn’t playable after Monday’s storms. In their first road trip and league game of the season, they were able to take advantage of cold weather and difficult playing conditions to post a 13-2 victory over the Braves. The Irish opened the game with consecutive hits from Spencer Talentino and Scott Carter. After Bradley Dinan walked to load the bases, Talentino scored the first run on a passed ball. With runners at second and third, Jake Schafer hit a grounder to second to knock in the second run, which was followed by Nate Ross’ single to score the third run. Olentangy scored their only two runs of the game in the first off starter Talentino, who also had trouble finding the strike zone and getting into an early rhythm..

The Irish opened the second stanza with 10 of 12 batters reaching base safely off of the Olentangy pitchers. They posted 8 runs on two infield hits by Dinan and Schafer, six base on balls and two hit by pitches. With a nine run lead, Talentino put it in cruise control and pitched three scoreless innings where he allowed no hits and struck out two Braves hitters. Ross posted one inning on the hill and closed the game in the fifth. The Irish pitching duo allowed only one hit, while collecting 4 strikeouts and allowing six walks. The defense played error free baseball and were highlighted by a diving stop by Jordan Hill at second base in the third inning.

The cold and windy weather made all parts of the game difficult, but the Irish were able to take an early advantage and exploit Olentangy’s pitching woes. They scored 13 runs on 8 hits, 11 walks and three hits by pitch. Of the hits, Talentino collected three singles (3-3), while Carter, Dinan, Max O’Connell, Schafer and Ross each collected a hit.

Our Freshmen face the same Olentangy team on Wednesday at home, so let’s hope their good fortune continues.

Varsity Drops Pair to Youngstown Boardman

Saturday, April 2nd ~ Dublin – As good a day as the Varsity had on Friday night, they had that bad a day on Saturday dropping both ends of a double header to the Boardman Spartans by scores of 11-3 and 9-4. The defense broke down as the Irish committed 8 errors on the day, and they struggled at the plate. In the first game, they failed to get a hit in 5 of the 7 innings, and in the second just couldn’t seem to get the 2-out base hit as they stranded 10 base runners, leaving the bases loaded 3 times.

Pitching the first game was sophomore Aaron Strausbaugh, making his first varsity start, who took the tough luck loss. He pitched 4 2/3 innings and was tagged with 8 un-earned runs. 3 errors and a misplayed double steal led to 4 runs in the top of the first inning, and he coaxed a 2 out groundball which should have ended the 5th inning scoreless, but another error opened the door for the Spartans to tack on 4 more runs. Stevie Carter came on to relieve in the 5th to snuff out that rally, and struck out 3 in his 2 1/3 innings of work. In game 2, Josh Nelsen was given the ball, and was staked to a 3-0 lead before the Spartan bats came to life in the 2nd with a couple of base hits and another misplayed double steal tying the game at 3. Nelsen worked his way out of a couple of jams in the 3rd and 4th, but the Spartans strung together 5 straight hits in the 5th to plate a couple more runs and take the lead they would not relinquish to give him the loss. Nick Berg came on in releif in the 6th and struck out a pair of Spartans in his 2 innings of work.

At the plate in the first game, the Irish went hitless through the first 3 innings of game 1, but the second time through the order was a different story. In the bottom of the 4th, Scioto parlayed a walk and 5 hits into 3 runs, which could have been a bunch more, but ran themselves into 2 outs on the base paths. In the 7th, they had the bases loaded with 1 out, but just could not push any of the runners across. In game 2, the Irish jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead i the bottom of the 1st, totaled 11 hits and were only a hit or 2 away from blowing the game wide open as they left the bases loaded 3 separate times, and would only manage 1 more run the rest of the way.< p>

In game 1 Tyler Flaherty and Chase Thompson each had a pair of base hits, and Austin Mooney and AJ Barnhardt had a single and a double respectively and each had an RBI. In game 2, Strausbaugh, Flaherty, Mooney and Barnhardt all had 2 base hits, Brian Cook was on base 3 times by virtue of a walk, was safe on an error and a single to center, and Zach Gerrasch drew a bases loaded walk to plate Carter with Scioto’s final run of the day in the 5th. Defensively, Dom Rosso had a career day in right field despite the wind, as he tracked down 7 fly balls, and had two outfield assists as he doubled up a runner on first base for a double play and took a single away from the Spartans as he fired a rocket to second base on a sharply hit ball through the right side to eliminate the lead runner. The up the middle combo of Flaherty and Strausbaugh turned the Irish’s second 6-4-3 double play in as many days.

Now, the Irish set their sights on OCC Cardinal Conference play as they start the week with a home and home series against the Braves of Olentangy. The game Monday will be at Olentangy in Lewis Center, and they return the visit to Irish Field on Wednesday.

JV Lose Both Ends Of Twin Bill

Saturday, April 2nd ~ Dublin – Unfortunately, the JV team followed suit with what the Varsity team was doing on Saturday as they lost both games of a double header to the Spartans of Youngstown Boardman by scores of 5-2 and 17-6. Similar to the Varsity, the JV defense was beset by a number of errors, and all the extra outs just became too much for the pitchers and the offense to overcome. Worse than losing the two games, Nick Smith has been lost for at least a couple of weeks after taking a line drive to the right hand late in game 2. The only good news is that preliminary medical reports indicate there were no broken bones but Nick will join the already crowded IR list. Heal fast Nick!

In game 1, three Irish players took to the mound for the first time of the year, and strung together a pretty solid game but just didn’t have the needed run support to negotiate a win. Nathan Reiser got the start and pitched 3 1/3 innings in his debut, allowing 4 runs (two unearned) and striking out 2 in taking the loss. Matt Vogel came on in relief in his first appearance on the young season and was stellar as he coaxed a 1-2-3 double play to get out of a bases loaded situation in the 4th, and went on to pitch a scoreless 5th. The final pitcher of the game, also making his first appearance of the year was Tim Shadoan, as he allowed only a single unearned run in his two innings of work. Game 2 started Adam Padovan cruised through the 1st inning with three up and three down, but then was bitten by the control bug in the 2nd, and was unable to retire a Spartan batter and was saddled with the loss before being replaced by Austin Troyer. Nate Gastaldo came on in relief in the 3rd and did a yeoman’s effort pitching into the 6th before yielding to Smith. Smith was then struck by a line drive and had to be removed, and was replaced by Will Styers who finished the game, which was shortened to 6 innings by the 10 run mercy rule.

Offensively, the Irish were led by Smith who had a great day at the plate. He had 3 doubles with 3 RBI’s, a walk and a pair of stolen bases. Shadoan had 3 hits including a triple, an RBI and a walk and Matt Messick also stepped up as he had a pair of doubles to go along with a walk. Riley Bush added a pair of singles, Styers had a double, single and a pair of walks. Nick Tizzano worked his way on base 3 times via the walk and Vogel chipped in with a single.

OCC Cardinal action starts this week as the JV squad will host the Olentangy Braves at Irish Field on Monday and then travel to Lewis Center on Wednesday.

Varsity Beats Darby, Move To 2-1

Friday, April 1st ~ Hilliard – On another blustery day from Mother Nature, Dublin Scioto ran their record to 2-1 beating Hilliard Darby 9-4, completing a clean sweep by the Irish over the Panthers, as Scioto won games at all 3 levels! The Irish combined solid pitching, timely hitting and error free defense to put together the win. The Irish struck first scoring 2 runs in the top of the first inning, added 2 more in the 3rd and a pair of single runs in each of the 4th and 5th innings, building a 6-0 lead before allowing the Panthers on the board. The Panthers battled back and scored 2 in the bottom of the 5th, but the Irish quickly responded with 2 more runs of their own to re-establish the 6 run lead. The Irish tacked on another run in the top of the 7th, and then held on in the bottom of the 7th to wrap up the game.

Phillip Parrott got the start on the bump for the Irish, and kept the Panther batters off balance for his 5 innings of work. He scattered 6 hits, and two walks, only allowing 2 runs in the 5th inning, striking out 4 on the night as he picks up his first W of the year. Parrott left no less than 5 runners on base in scoring position as he was consistently able to get the crucial third out of the inning when he really needed it. Stevie Carter came in from the outfield to spell Parrott in the 6th, and pitched a scoreless 6th. After the Panthers put a pair of 2 runs on the board in the bottom of the 7th, the ball was turned over to Tyler “Fred” Flaherty who needed only 3 pitches to coax a soft fly ball to center for the final out.

Offensively, the Irish were led by Austin Mooney and AJ Barnhardt who both had 2 hits and 3 RBI’s, and Stevie Carter who had 3 hits and 2 RBI’s. Aaron Strausbaugh also had 2 singles and a walk as he scored 3 times, and Tyler Flaherty was on base 3 times with a single, a walk and was hit by a pitch, and scored twice. As mentioned earlier, Scioto played error free defense, highlighted by a 6-4-3 double play, Flaherty to Josh Nelsen to Barnhardt in the 4th, and there were several tough catches in the windy outfield by Chase Thompson.

The Irish jumped out to a quick lead in the top of the first with Carter and Strausbaugh getting lead off singles. They would come around to score on a groundout by Mooney and single by Barnhardt. In the top of the third, Strausbaugh led off with a walk, and Flaherty followed with a single. After a pair of stolen bases, they would score on groundouts by Mooney and Barnhardt. The Irish added another run in the 4th when Thompson laid down a bunt which the catcher threw away, and he would score on a single by Carter. In the 5th, a leadoff walk to Flaherty would result in run, when after a Mooney single to move him to scoring position, Flaherty scored on a single by Nelsen. In the 6th, Mooney and Barnhardt would come through again, with a pair of two-out RBI singles, scoring Sam Ehret and Strausbaugh who both singled to get on base. The Scioto scoring was completed in the top of the 7th as they added an insurance run. Nelsen led off the inning with a single, went to third on a single by Thompson and then scored on a groundout by Carter.

The Scioto team is right back at it on Saturday at Irish Field, as they host the Spartans of Youngstown Boardman in a double header, with the first game slated to start at noon.

JV Beats Darby 9-3

Friday, April 1st ~ Hilliard – After falling behind by a score of 3-0 in the bottom of the fist inning, the Scioto JV came from behind and took over the lead in the top of the 2nd 5-3. They would tack on 4 more runs in the top of the 3rd, and that would be it for the scoring for both teams as the Irish win 9-3.

Matthew Messick got the nod on the hill tonight, and after giving up three runs in the bottom of the 1st inning, settled into a nice rhythm, shutting down the Panthers for the next 5 innings. He was helped out throughout the game by some defensive gems behind him, including 2 double plays, a diving catch in the outfield by Taylor Dyson, and Adam Padovan throwing out a would be base stealer at second base. Austin Troyer came on in the bottom of the 7th, and pitched a scoreless inning, closing the door in a non-save situation.

Dyson got the scoring started for Scioto, drawing a bases loaded walk to bring in Nick Smith, who led off the 2nd with a single. Preceding Dyson was Matt Vogel who singled, and Nathan Callender walked to load the bases. Matt Shadoan had the big hit of the inning when he tripled clearing the bases, and he would score on a ball hit by Nolan Whener. In the 3rd, after getting two quick outs, the Irish would string together 5 consecutive hits to tally 4 times moving their lead to 9-3. Vogel led the parade with a triple to left. He would score on Callender’s double, who then in turn scored on Dyson’s single. Dyson would move up and be chased home by Shadoan’s single, and he would score on Whener’s single. The Irish would get base runners on in every inning, but were not able to get the key base hit to being in any runs, and that score would be the final.

The Irish are right back in action at noon Saturday, hosting the Youngstown Boardman Spartans at the Field of Dreams for a double header.

Freshmen Win, Back to .500

Friday, April 1st ~ Dublin – The Irish Freshmen avenged their opening season loss with an 11-9 victory over the visiting Lancaster Golden Gales. Bradley Dinan started the game on the hill and completed 3 2/3 innings for the win. Lancaster struck for one run in the top of the first inning with three soft hits that seemed to have eyes and found some holes in the defense. Spencer Talentino opened the bottom half of the stanza with a base on balls and then promptly stole second base. Batting third in the lineup, Dinan ripped a triple over the centerfielder’s head scoring Talentino. He then scored on the same play when Gale’s third baseman failed to catch the thrown ball in an effort to tag Dinan out. Max O’Connell and Nate Ross both singled in the first inning, but both were stranded on the base paths. The Irish secured a 2-1 lead, which they wouldn’t relinquish.

Dinan and his defensive teammates kept the Golden Gales from scoring in the second and third innings, while the offense got warmed up and put an additional 8 runs on the board. In the second, Andrew McKinley took his first of two hits by pitch to reach base. He was then promptly knocked in on a hard hit double by Scott Carter over the centerfielder’s head. The Irish struck for 7 runs in the third with hits from Talentino and Carter along with a series of walks and errors committed by the Gales. The Irish finished the third inning with a 10-1 lead and were looking for the route.

Lancaster though had other ideas and struck for 8 runs in the top of the 4th off of a series of hits and Irish errors. Coach Piunno relieved his starter with Trevor Jones, who was able stop the bleeding and maintain the fragile lead. Lancaster was able stop the Irish in the 4th inning and closed the gap to a 10-9 score with their last run in the 5th inning off of three singles. The Irish got an insurance run in bottom of the 5th that started with a bloop single to right field by Dinan. Following a stolen base, he was knocked home off of the bat of Jacob Schafer, who hit a hard shot past the shortstop.

Jones quieted the Gales’ bats in the 6th inning. He yielded the mound to Ross to pitch the 7th inning and collect the save. Ross faced four batters striking out the side, while allowing one single.

The freshmen are idle this weekend because inclement weather caused the cancelation of their doubleheader in Youngstown. Their next scheduled game is Monday at home against Olentangy and our Athletic Trainer, Chris Troyer’s son. They play at Olentangy on Tuesday.

Varsity Bats Cool Off, Lose To Worthington

Tuesday, March 29th ~ Dublin – The prevailing winter temps cooled off the Scioto hot bats as they were held to a mere 3 hits all game, and never seemed to get in any offensive rhythm, dropping their non-conference match up with Thomas Worthington by a score of 5-0. The Irish were their own worst enemy defensively, with 5 errors on the day leading to too many extra at bats for the Cardinals.

Josh Nelsen was on the mound and gave a strong performance over 5 innings. A pair of errors led to 2 unearned runs in the top of the 1st to stake Worthington to a 2-0 lead. In the 2nd and 3rd innings, he worked his way around a base hit and an error in each inning and stranded two base runners in both innings. In the top of the 4th, as the Cardinals had their third turn thru the line-up finally got to Nelson, they scored 3 times on 3 hits. Nelsen did help his own cause with a groundball comebacker which he flipped to Chase Thompson at home plate who applied the tag for the out. This play coming just one inning after another tough play at the plate, this time Nick Keeley with the assist. Nick Berg came on and threw 2 innings of hitless relief only allowing 2 base runners.

At the plate, Keeley singled in the first inning but got no further than second after an Austin Mooney walk. Thompson had the only extra base hit for Scioto as he belted a leadoff double in the bottom of the 2nd inning, but was stranded at third base. Stevie Carter singled in the 6th, and was moved to second as Tyler Flaherty was hit by a pitch. Both runners moved up on a groundout, but would get no further.

The Varsity pack their bags and travel to Hilliard on Thursday, to take on the Hilliard Darby Panthers. First pitch is slated for 5:00.

JV Drop Opener to Cardinals

Tuesday, March 29th ~ Worthington – The Scioto JV team dropped a heartbreaker in their opening game of the year, losing by a final score of 7-5 to the Cardinals of Thomas Worthington. The Irish jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the top of the first, and then built their lead to 4-0, before surrendering 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th and 3 more in the bottom of the 6th to fall behind 7-4. The Irish tacked on a run in the top of the 7th, but it was too little too late as the Cardinals held on for the win.

Brayden Pfeiffer took the hill and seemed to be cruising as he pitched 4 scoreless innings, but he ran out of gas in the 5th. He turned the ball over to Austin Troyer in the 5th, and the Cardinals seemed to have him timed up, and he gave way to Riley Bush in the 6th to finish the game.

Offensively for the Irish, they got things going right away in the top of the 1st. Brian Cook scored the first run on a passed ball, after getting base via the walk. Will Styers picked up an RBI when he singled home Matthew Messick who had singled earlier. In the 5th the Irish plated a pair of runs on a single by Nathan Callander, and a couple of bunts and Cardinal errors. In the top of the 7th, Tim Shadoan singled and eventually stole home for the Irish’ final run. Also notching hits in the first game was Adam Padovan and Nate Gastaldo, and Brian Cook picked up a pair of walks.

The Irish have their home opener scheduled for Thursday as they host Hilliard Darby at Irish Field at 5:00.

Freshman Fall Short In Opener

March 29th ~ Dublin – Our Scioto Irish Freshman baseball team experienced their first high school opening day and competed well against the Thomas Worthington Cardinals. Unfortunately for the Irish, the Cardinals finished on top with a 7-2 win.

Starting pitcher, Spencer Talentino, opened the game with an impressive first inning on the hill and then started the bottom of the first with a season opening single to left field. Bradley Dinan also singled to right field in the first moving Talentino to third. Max O’Connell then singled to left field knocking in Talentino for the team’s first run of the year and an early lead.

Thomas Worthington scored three runs in the second and forced the Irish to fight out of an early hole. In the bottom half of the second, Trevor Jones reached first on an infield error after a hard hit ball to the Cardinal’s shortstop. Nate Ross forced a base on balls to move Jones to second, which was followed by a right field single off Talentino’s bat knocking in Jones. The inning ended with a with a 3-2 deficit and unfortunately that is as close as the Irish were able to attain.

From an offensive standpoint, the Irish posted six singles with two each by Talentino, Dinan and O’Connell. Defensively, Tanentino pitched the first three innings and was relieved by Jordan Hill, who finished the game. Each pitcher showed positive innings for their first outing of the year competing in unseasonably cold temperatures. Thomas Worthington collected 11 hits with three being extra baggers. Each pitcher was supported well by their fielding teammates, highlighted by Dinan’s 10 putouts and assists at shortstop.

With no time to dwell on the opening day loss, the freshmen Irish hope to bounce back with a home game scheduled for Thursday against Hilliard Darby. They also play Friday at home against Lancaster followed by a Saturday doubleheader at Youngstown Boardman.

Varsity Comes Out Strong In Opening Day Win

Monday, March 28th ~ Dublin – On a day that saw temperatures just barely above the 40 degree mark, the Irish bats were hot as they pounded out 10 hits in a mercy rule shortened game winning by a final score of 13-3 over the Franklin Heights Falcons.

Austin Mooney picked up the win on the mound as he pitched 3 innings in his first outing of the year. After allowing a pair of runs on a pair of walks and a pair of singles in the first inning, Mooney settled into his groove allowing only 1 run over the next 2 innings. He had a nasty curveball working in his favor as he consistently worked ahead of the Falcon hitters. He allowed 3 runs, on 3 hits, walked 3 and struck out 5. Nolan Wehner came on in relief and pitching a scoreless 4th and 5th, working his way out of a small jam in the 5th coaxing a soft fly ball to right field for the final out of the inning.

Offensively, the Irish were led by Stevie Carter who had a pair of base hits and 3 RBI’s including the final walk-off single, putting the Irish up by 10 in the bottom of the 5th. Tyler Flaherty also had two hits and a pair of RBI’s. Christian Stamets started the scoring for Scioto in the bottom of the second inning, driving in Aaron Strausbaugh with the first run on an infield single. Dom Rosso and Nick Smith, running for a gimpy Stamets, scored on Tyler Flaherty’s single to right. A bases loaded walk to Carter scored Nick Keeley who was on base after being hit by a pitch. Another bases loaded walk to Strausbaugh would plate Flaherty. An AJ Barnhart single to right scored Mooney and Carter, and then a single by Chase Thompson scored Strausbaugh and Barnhart for the final runs of the inning as the Irish score 9 times, sending 13 men to the plate in the bottom of the 2nd taking a commanding 9-2 lead.

After allowing a single run in the top of the 3rd, the Irish responded with 3 of their own making the score 12-3. Mooney doubled to right scoring Keeley, Carter single home Mooney, and then after stealing 2nd, scored on an infield error. After a scoreless 4th and top of the 5th, the Irish plated the final run on a bases loaded single by Carter scoring Zach Gerrasch who was pinch running for Keeley who had walked earlier.

The Varsity return to action Tuesday as they host the Cardinals of Thomas Worthington at Scioto Field at 5:00.

Can Irish Three-Peat In OCC Cardinal?

Saturday, March 26th ~ Dublin – Despite losing a number of players to graduation from the 2010 class, first year coach Patrick Elias is optimistic heading into the 2011 baseball season for the Dublin Scioto Irish baseball team. "Even though the Irish Baseball Program lost 7 seniors, all with at least two years of playing experience, we will be a mature program," Elias said as he prepares for his inaugural season at the helm of the team, taking over for Scott Marple. Scioto has 5 starters coming back, as well as several others who have experience at the varsity level. Elias continued, “"Our chemistry has been very solid throughout the program thus far, with many of our Juniors beginning to come out of their shell. This is a testament to a solid senior class, full of players that believe in the team-above-self philosophy.” Among other goals this season, the Irish are pursuing their third straight OCC Cardinal Conference Championship.

Leading the way for the Irish on the mound will be Junior Kris Simonton. Juniors Austin Mooney, Phil Parrott and Senior Josh Nelson will round out a very experienced starting rotation. Per the new format in the OCC this year, Scioto will play its conference opponents in consecutive games, thus requiring each team to face multiple pitchers, which bodes well for the Irish with their deep pitching staff. When not on the mound, you can expect to see Simonton at second base, Mooney behind the plate, and Nelson in the outfield. Senior Nick Keeley is expected to handle the hot corner at third, as Junior Tyler Flaherty shifts over to shortstop to anchor the Irish infield. In addition to Nelson, the outfield will be patrolled by experienced Seniors Chase Thompson in center and Christian Stamets in left, who both return to their positions from last year.

Offensively for the Irish, Stamets will likely lead the top of the order hopefully putting speed on the base paths for the heart of the order comprised of Flaherty, Simonton and Mooney. Other Seniors on the roster include Tom Ansley, Sam Ehret, Zach Gerrasch, Jacob Nau and Dom Rosso.

Excited for the new season, Elias states, "Our players have done a wonderful job transitioning to a new coach. There was a challenge placed in front of them many months ago and they have worked hard to collectively meet the demands and expectations set forth by our program's history." With good numbers in the program, Scioto will yet again be fielding a junior varsity and freshman team as well this year. “If our younger classes can buy in to the example set by the senior class this year, the future will be bright for many more years to come."

The Irish take to the field for the first time on Monday March 28th, at 5:00, at Irish Field. The Varsity kick off the season hosting the Falcons of Franklin Heights in a non-conference game. The JV will also start on Monday, traveling to Frankln Heights. The Freshman team starts their schedule at home on Tuesday, hosting the Thomas Worthington Cardinals at the Irish Field of Dreams.

JV Ends Season On Winning Note

Pataskala – The JV team finishes their season going out strong with yet another win, this time over the Warriors of Watkins Memorial by a final score of 9-4. The score is not indicative of the tightness of the game, however, and this was a good game to end the year as the score was tied 2-2 heading into the 7th when the Irish erupted for 7 runs.

Watkins plated single runs in the fourth and sixth innings as Nick Berg scattered three hits and allowed one earned run in 6 innings of work to pick up the win.

The Irish plated their initial two runs in the 3rd as Aaron Strausbaugh singled and scored on a Chance Dummitt sacrifice, while AJ Barnhardt singled and scored on an RBI single by Nick Smith. The seven run 7th for the Irish was aided by three walks and a two run errors by Watkins. Stevie Carter added an RBI single and Brian Cook added a key two run RBI single to round out the scoring.

The victory was the 6th in a row to finish the season, and raise the JV record to 14-12, finishing at a team high two games over .500 for the year.

Irish Cannot Overcome Errors, Lose To New Albany

Thursday May 13th ~ Dublin – The Sectional Championship game between the Dublin Scioto Irish and the visiting New Albany Eagles started out as a pitcher’s dual as both pitcher’s matched zero’s on the scoreboard for the first 5 innings. The two teams would then combine for 8 runs in the final two innings, and despite having a number of opportunities, the Irish just could not come up with the big hit, losing by a final score of 5-3. The Irish left the bases loaded in the 1st and 7th innings, and just couldn’t seem to muster any offense in the middle innings.

Charlie Suich pitched 6 innings and scattered 3 hits, and worked his way around 4 walks, and a hit batter as he allowed only a single un-earned run, and struck out 8 Eagles along the way. Seth Eller pitched the 7th and was the victim of 4 un-earned runs, taking the loss. The Eagles strung together 6 hits in the inning, and not a hard hit ball in the lot. A couple of bloops, a gork and a couple of seeing-eye shots, the ball just seemed to fall where no one could get to it.

After allowing a run in the top of the 6th, the Irish answered right away in their half of the inning. Matt Martin lead off with a grounder to the third baseman which he misplayed into an error. Nick Keeley would bunt Martin to second, and then Eller came up and dropped a 390 foot bomb to center field, scoring Martin, allowing him to trot into third with a triple. Charlie Suich would follow with a single driving in Dom Rosso who was runnin for Eller, and would advance to second when the second baseman threw the ball away. After Suich moved to 3rd on a wild pitch, Tyler Flaherty would slap a shot into the gap to score Suich and give the Irish a 3-1 lead. Then the wheels would come off, and the New Albany Eagles would bat around in the top of the 7th, plating 4 runs, and take the lead which would eventually be the final score, 5-3. The Irish would battle to the end, after sharps singles to the outfield by Chase Thompson and Martin, and an infield hit by Eller, the Irish had the tying run at 2nd, go ahead run on first base. But that is as close as they would come, the offense coming just too little too late.

The season ending loss dropped the Irish record to 17-9 overall, with a rough ending as the Irish dropped 4 of their last 6 games.

JV Beats Cardington 9-2 For 5th Straight

Dublin – As the lone Scioto baseball team in action on Monday night, the JV squad hosted the Pirates of Cardington-Lincoln, and put together their 5th consecutive victory by a score of 9-2. The win brings their record to 13-12, up and over the .500 mark for the first time since the first week of the season when they were 2-1.

The Irish got things going right away in the first inning as Nick Smith hit a two out two run RBI single, after Aaron Strausbaugh and Chance Dummitt reached on a walk and error, respectively, taking a 2-0 lead. In the top of the 3rd, the Pirates plated their first run of the night followed, in the bottom half of the inning by a single run by the Irish, as Smith again lashed an RBI two out single. The Irish plated two more in the 4th and one in the 5th as Stevie Carter, Strausbaugh and Zack Gerrasch scored, as Dummitt and Carter provided an RBI each.

The game scoring was rounded out in the 6th as Cardington plated another single run in the top of the inning, and the Irish added three. After two were out, Smith singled and scored on an RBI double by Brian Cook. Following a Tyler Dyson single, Gerrasch singled in the final two runs of the night.

Phillip Parrott took the hill and finished his second straight complete game, scattering 7 hits and striking out a season high total of 12 Cardington batters! Phillip picked up his 4th win on the year.

The JV squad is scheduled to have a home and home series with Watkins Memorial on Tuesday (in Pataskala) and at home on Thursday.

Battle Of Hard Road Goes To Wolves

Saturday, May 8th ~ Worthington – The Battle of Hard Road was a closer contest than the final score would seem, as the teams battled it out and it was a 1 run game going to the bottom of the 5th. That is when the Wolves erupted for 7 runs and virtually put the game away by a final score of 12-5. The loss puts a cap on the regular season and drops the Scioto record to 17-8 on the year, but now the Irish have the second season to look forward to, as the Sectional Tournament gets started this week.

Christian Stamets sparked the Irish offense going 2 for 3 with a double, single and 3 RBI’s. Seth Eller and Charlie Suich also had multi-hit games, Eller adding a walk. On the mound, Josh Nelsen had the start and would allow 5 runs in his 3 innings of work, and would get saddled with the loss. Nick Keeley and Tyler Falherty came on in relief and they were unable to stem the tide either.

Kilbourne scored 2 runs in the bottom of the first on 3 singles and a HBP. Scioto would answer right back and tie it in the top of the second. Austin Mooney led off with a single, and after a walk to Flaherty and a fielder’s choice to Kris Simonton put runners at the corners, Stamets would rip a 2 run double over the left fielders head to tie the game. In the bottom of the 3rd, Kilbourne got 3 runs on 2 walks, a HBP, a balk and a pair of singles.

The Irish would continue to battle back scoring lone runs on the top of the 4th and 5th innings. In the 4th, singles by Suich, Simonton and an RBI single by Stamets brought the Irish within 2. In the 5th the Irish would cut the deficit to 1 on a single and stolen base by Keeley and RBI single to right by Flaherty to make it 5-4. That would be as close as the Irish would come, as the flood gates opened up in the bottom of the 5th as Kilbourne scored 7 runs on 2 walks and 7 hits after beginning the inning with a fly out to center. Scioto would get a final run in the 7th on singles by Eller, Dom Rosso and Suich.

The Irish begin their playoff run, hosting the second round of the Sectional Playoffs, on Wednesday, May 12th. The 4th seeded Irish drew a bye in the first round, and will host the winner of the New Albany Eagles vs. Hilliard Darby Panthers game which will be played in New Albany on Monday, May 10th. The Irish defeated both of these teams during the regular season: they beat visiting Darby by a score of 9-5 way back on April 1st; and later in the same week, run-ruled New Albany on their own field by a score of 14-2, before succumbing to the Eagles in the nightcap of the double header by a final count of 16-6.

JV Sweep Kilbourne & North

Dublin – The Irish JV run their winning streak to four games by beating the Wolves of Worthington Kilbourne 14-13 and the Westerville North Warriors 8-7 in games the new polar bears at the zoo would have enjoyed watching. After starting out the year in the hole, the JV have now battled back to even their record at 12-12 on the season.

Against Kilbourne, the Irish spotted the Wolves five runs in the top of the second. In the bottom of the second, Phillip Parrott and Sam Ehret singled that set up a two run RBI double by Zach Gerrasch. In the third, the Irish tied it up as Nick Smith doubled and scored on an RBI single by AJ Barnhardt. Nate Gastaldo then doubled in Barnhardt and would later score on a ground out RBI by Parrott. In the fourth, the Irish broke the game open scoring 5 times as Smith, Brian Cook, Gastaldo, Ehret and Gerrasch all singled and scored, and Nolan Wehner singled knocking in 2 of the runs. The Wolves scored one in the top of the 5th and the Irish scored three more times in the 5th as well, highlighted by Nick Smith's RBI triple. The Wolves scored two in the top of the 6th with the Irish scoring one in the bottom half on a single by Ehret and run scoring RBI by Stevie Carter. Headed into the top of the 7th the Wolves were down 14-8 but battled back to make things interesting scoring 5 in the their half of the 7th making the score 14-13, but could not muster the tying run, falling just short as the Irish hold on for the victory.

Wehner picked up the Irish win pitching 4 2/3 solid innings of middle relief. Parrott came on to pick up the save in the 7th striking out 2 of 3 Wolves batters.

The Irish were up in the second game against the Warriors 7-3 heading into the 7th but again allowed the lead to slip away as North tied it up 7-7. But, in the bottom of the seventh Barnhardt doubled to lead off the inning and scored on the next pitch single by Cook to secure the non-league victory at 8-7. The Irish plated 4 of their other runs in the first as Carter, Aaron Strausbaugh, Chance Dummitt and Cook all scored. In the 4th Smith scored after singling, Nate Gastaldo had the key RBI single. And, finally in the 5th, the Irish scored two runs as Carter and Strausbaugh both singled and scored as Dummitt and Cook had an RBI single and fielder’s choice, respectively.

Barnhardt pitched 5 strong innings allowing two runs before giving way to Carter. Carter pitched a strong 6th but ran into trouble in the 7th allowing the Warrior's four runs. Parrott would come on to finish the last two thirds of the inning, and would pick up the win.

The Irish are back in action on Monday as they host the Cardington-Lincoln Pirates at Irish Field at 5:00.

Frosh Drop Rough One To Pioneers 4-2

Plain City ~ At cold and windy Jonathan Alder the Irish bats were as chilly as the weather, Scioto falling to the host Pioneers 4-2. Solid pitching and good defense enabled the Pioneers to keep the Irish off the scoreboard. The loss drops the Irish record to 11-10 on the year. The wind played a factor in the game as well; Jacob Nave battled the wind all day and made several catches on the day.

Taylor Dyson got the nod on the hill, and he combined with Nick Tizzano and Carl Kubalak 6 strong innings of work, but with little offense, it just wasn’t enough. With the way runs have been coming lately, they certainly pitched well enough to get a victory, but it just wasn’t to be.

The Irish jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Aaron Strausbaugh hit a bloop single scoring Dyson. The Pioneers would score 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th to take a 2-1 lead, but the Irish would battle right back and tie the game in the top of the 5th when Nathan Reiser scooted home on a wild pitch. That tie was short lived as the Pioneers scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th to go ahead 4-2. The Irish got the tying run on base in their half of the 7th but couldn't push either runner across.

The Irish wrap up OCC Cardinal play hosting the Celtics of Dublin Jerome on Tuesday at 5:00.

Varsity Comes From Behind To Beat Sparta Highland 3-2

Friday, May 7th ~ Dublin – In a non-league pitcher’s dual, the OCC Cardinal champion Dublin Scioto Irish scored a late run on a walk off single in the bottom of the 7th to beat the Fighting Scots of Sparta Highland by a final score of 3-2. Both teams had 7 hits, but the Irish were able to take advantage of a Highland error in the 7th to make the difference. The victory upped the Irish record to 17-7.

Austin Mooney started on the hill and pitched 5 solid innings. Thomas Hayes entered in relief in the 6th, and pitched the last 2 innings, and picked up the win, his second of the year against 1 loss.

Scioto jumped out to the lead in the bottom of the first on a solo homerun off the bat of Seth Eller. Highland tied the game in the top of the 3rd on a pair of singles, and a grounder that the Irish defense threw away allowing the run to score. Highland went ahead in the 5th on an Irish throwing error, a sac bunt and a single to right field. Scioto battled back and re-tied the game in the bottom of the 6th. Matt Martin got things rolling with a walk, Hayes moved Martin to second, Eller then laid down a bunt for a single, and a passed ball allowed Martin to score. Then the Irish put a capper on the evening when Charlie Suich reached base on a Scots’ error, Sean Thomas would follow with a bloop single. Suich and Thomas then executed the double steal, both moving to scoring position, and "Hitman" Hayes would send the Dublin crowd home happy with a walk-off single to left to win the game.

Offensive leaders on the night were Martin with 2 singles and a walk (he reached base 3 of 4 times), and Eller as he went 2 for 3 with a homerun. The Irish take their winning ways on the road on Saturday, traveling down the street for this year’s chapter of the annual Battle of Hard Road, as they take on the Wolves of Worthington Kilbourne in their final regular season game which is scheduled to start at noon.

Next week, the Irish begin their playoff run, hosting the second round of the Sectional Playoffs on Wednesday, May 12th. The 4th seeded Irish drew a bye in the first round, and will host the winner of the New Albany Eagles vs. Hilliard Darby Panthers game which will be played in New Albany on Monday, May 10th. The Irish defeated both of these teams during the regular season: they beat visiting Darby by a score of 9-5 way back on April 1st; and later in the same week run-ruled New Albany on their own field by a score of 14-2, before succumbing to the Eagles in the nightcap of the double header by a final count of 16-6.

Frosh Beat North 9-7

Westerville ~ In a rained out, re-scheduled make-up OCC Cardinal game; Scioto was able to outlast Westerville North by a final tally of 9-7. The Irish got out of football mode and managed to win a game in a more conventional baseball manner, by a score of 9-7. The Irish found themselves down 7-3 after 4 innings but rallied for 6 unanswered runs to beat the Warriors.

Chance Dummitt went the distance on the mound, striking out 2, and getting stronger as the game progressed. Solid work in the field helped Dummitt notch his 3rd W of the year. The offense was paced by Taylor Dyson had 5 RBIs and Aaron Strausbaugh delivered 2 clutch hits driving in the game winning run and an insurance run

The Irish took the early lead in the top of the 2nd when a Dyson single scored Brayden Pfeiffer and Adam Padovan. After giving up the lead with 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th, the Irish started to battle back, when Carl Kubalak came home on another RBI hit by Dyson, this time a double. They allowed the Warriors to extend their lead to 4, before they completed their comeback with 5 runs in the top of the 5th. A balk chased home Strausbaugh, a bases loaded walk to Kubalak pushed home Dummitt, yet another RBI single by Dyson scored Padovan and Matt Vogel, and then a Strausbaugh single brought in Kubalak. The Irish would tack on an insurance run in the top of the 7th when Strausbaugh tripled, driving in Nick Tizzano.

The young Irish squad will travel to Plain City to take on the Jonathan Alder Pioneers in a non-league match-up. They will also round out their OCC Cardinal, when they host the Celtics of Dublin Jerome on Tuesday at 5:00.

Varsity Beats Marysville, Are Cardinal Co-Champs

Wednesday, May 5th ~ Dublin – With tonight’s “going away” 12-4 victory over the Monarchs of Marysville, Dublin Scioto earned a second consecutive co-Championship of the OCC Cardinal Conference. This title will be shared with the Dublin Jerome Celtics and the Olentangy Liberty Patriots, as they all finished with identical 10-4 league records. The Irish successfully defended their conference championship, last year shared with the Patriots.

The Irish spotted the Monarchs a run in the top of the first inning by virtue of a pair of walks and a couple of singles. A big defensive play for the Irish snuffed out a scoring chance: with runners on second and third, the Monarch hitter sent a flair out to right field; the runner at second had to hold up to see if the ball would be caught, and that would be just enough time for Chase Thompson to throw in to Seth Eller, who would relay home to Brandon Marker in time to tag out the runner trying to score from second with a big out. The Irish then responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning, as they manufactured a run using a textbook version of small ball. Matt Martin led off with a single, and stole second base. Tyler Flaherty would push him to third with a sacrifice bunt, and Eller would pick up the RBI with a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield. The Monarchs would go 1-2-3 in the top of the 2nd, and the Irish offense would start to flex their muscles in the bottom of the inning. Charlie Suich led off the inning with a bomb over the center fielder's head, a lead off triple. Kris Simonton would follow with a little thunder of his own, hitting a home run over the 375 mark in left center. A pair of singles by Nick Keeley and Brandon Marker, a walk to Martin and a passed ball would chase Keeley home, and then a sacrifice fly by Flaherty would bring in the Marker for a 5-1 lead.

Marysville would log only one base hit in the 3rd and 4th innings, and Scioto would add a single run on Sean Thomas’ home run to straight away center field in the bottom of the 4th pushing the lead to 6-1. Marysville added a pair of runs as they tried to get back into the game in the top of the 5th, via 3 walks, a single and a passed ball, but would leave the bases loaded. Austin Mooney single would start the Irish rally in the 5th. Dom Rosso, pinch running for Mooney would score on single by Simonton. Keeley would drive in Charlie Suich (who reached on an error) and Simonton with a single to right. In the top of the 6th, Marysville would get a 2 out double, but would move no further. In their half of the 6th, the Irish almost wrapped it up, scoring 3 runs on a single by Thomas, a walk by Martin, and singles by Flaherty, Mooney and Suich. However, with the 10 run-lead run standing at third base with 1 out, the Irish were unable to punch the final run across. The Monarchs would add a single run in the top of the 7th on 3 singles, but just could not seem to string together enough hits to mount a serious challenge.

Suich would get the nod, and pitched very effectively, spreading out 3 runs on 4 hits, striking out 7 on the night. He would struggle a bit with control walking 5, but was able to work through his troubles with minimal damage, picking up his 5th win on the season, with no losses. Thomas Hayes would come on in the 6th for relief, and would close down the Monarchs, allowing a single run in the 7th, and getting a key strikeout to end the game.

The win pushes the Irish record up to 16-7. The Champion Green, Silver and White will be back in action at Irish Field, Friday night as they host Highland Sparta.

JV Hold On To Beat Marysville 8-7

Marysville – The JV Irish win their second game in a row, 8-7 over the Marysville Monarchs on their home turf running their record to 10-12 on the season, and 6-8 in the league as they close out OCC Cardinal play. The Irish used a 6 run second inning to take a lead that they would not relinquish—and making it extra exciting by getting the final out of the game with bases loaded in the bottom of the 7th. The Irish swung the bats well with multi hit nights from Stevie Carter, Nick Berg, Brian Cook, and Zach Gerrasch.

The second inning was the big inning for the Irish, as they scored 6 runs, to virtually pu the game away. In the second, Cook had a double and 2 RBI's, Carter had an RBI double, and Berg and Phillip Parrott each added RBI singles. Sam Ehret also singled and scored in the second inning outburst. The other two Irish runs included Carter in the first as he walked and later scored, and Nick Smith scoring in the 5th, reaching and scoring on a pair of Monarch errors.

Berg pitched his second complete game and turned in a gutty performance. Despite not having his best stuff, he struck out 4, in going the distance, picking up his second win against no losses on the season.

The Irish will be back in OCC Cardinal League action on Tuesday at 5:00, traveling to Dublin Jerome to make-up Friday night’s game that was rained out.

Freshman Defeat Marysville By A Touchdown

Marysville ~ A combination of the wind blowing out and a short Marysville fence led to a 28-21 slugfest called in the 6th inning due to darkness. The Irish had no shortage of hitting heroes led by Chance Dummitt's 2HRs and Matt Vogel's grand slam. Will Houston also added a HR. Riley Bush scored 4 runs and drove in 2 RBIs. Braden Pfeiffer, Adam Padovan and Nathan Riser also added key hits. Brayden Pfeiffer pitched well in difficult conditions. The Irish have scored 62 runs in their last 3 games. The win pushes the Irish record to 10-9 overall, and 7-5 in the conference.

The scoring came early and often for Scioto, starting right in the top of the 1st inning. The Irish jumped on the Monarchs early scoring 12 runs in the top of the 1st. The big hit was the Vogel grand slam. Not to be outdone, Dummitt had a home run AND a run scoring single in the inning. Singles by Pfeiffer, Nick Tizzano and Bush drove in 4 runs, and a timely error added another. The rout was on but short lived, as the Monarchs stormed back for 10 runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Score after 1, Irish lead 12-10.

The second inning was fairly quiet as the only runs in the inning were a pair scored by Scioto on singles by Padovan and Bush and an error on the Marysville leftfielder. The third inning saw a solo shot by Houston, as the Irish would take a lead of 15-10. Marysville would score 3 runs in the bottom of the inning to draw within a pair at 15-13. The Irish bats would respond again, batting around and then some in the top of the 5th, making the score 27-15. 4 error, Dummitt’s second home run on the night, a double by Riser, single by Padovan, and walks to Aaron Strausbaugh, Houston and Vogel all added up to the dozen runs pushed across in the inning.

Marysville was not ready to go quietly, as they came right back with a 6 spot in the bottom of the inning. Score after 4: Scioto 27, Monarchs 19. The Irish would add their final run in the top of the 5th, as an infield error allowed Riser to score. The Monarchs added a pair of scores in the bottom of the 5th, making the score 28-21, at which point the umpires decided to call the game on account of darkness.

Pfeifer, Padovan and Tizzano combined on the mound for the victory. Pfeiffer had 2 strikeouts in his 3 innings of work, picking up his third win of the year. Sorry Nick and Adam, this was NOT a save situation.

The Irish seek to add another league win on Friday as they travel to Westerville North.

Irish JV Defeat Red Raiders

London – The Dublin Scioto JV rebounded from their loss to Jerome, to beat the Red Raiders of London by a final count of 7-2. The Irish got off to a rough start, spotting London 2 runs in the first as Phillip Parrott was a little high in the strike zone, allowing three hard hit singles. However, the Irish responded with 5 runs in the second, to retake the lead for good.

The 5 run second inning was highlighted by AJ Barnhardt's 3 run homer over the 350 mark on the fence in right center field. In addition to Barnhardt’s home run, Zach Gerrasch and Nathan Callender contributed RBI singles as the Irish scored all five runs with two outs. Gerrasch added another RBI single in the 5th inning after three Irish base runners had walked.

After the first inning, Parrott settled down and pitched a complete game allowing only one hit over the remaining 6 innings, while striking out nine. Parrott picks up his second W of the season.

The Irish travel to Marysville on Wednesday, in closing out the OCC Cardinal schedule against the Monarchs.

Varsity Ripped By Celts

Monday, May 3rd ~ Dublin Jerome – Dublin Scioto was barely in the game with the Celtics of Dublin Jerome, as both teams scored a lone tally in the first to start the game. The Celtics batted around and put 6 runs up on the bottom of the second taking the lead they would not relinquish. Jerome would add another single tally in the bottom of the 3rd and go scoreless in the bottom of the 5th, before Scioto mounted a rally in the top of the 5th scoring a pair of runs, before Jerome would score 5 runs in the bottom of the 5th to complete the mercy rule victory by a final score of 13-3. The loss drops the Irish record to 15-7 overall, and 9-4 in the conference, dropping into a 3 way tie for first with Dublin Jerome and Olentangy Liberty.

The Irish got things going right away in the first inning, and the outlook was positive as they loaded the bases with 1 out on a pair of singles by Tyler Flaherty and Seth Eller, and an intentional pass to Austin Mooney. However, they were only able to push across a lone run on a walk to Kris Simonton, and would leave the bases loaded. In the top of the 4th, the Irish loaded the bases on a pair of walks to Thomas Hayes and Matt Martin, sandwiched around a fielder’s choice to Sean Thomas. An error by the Celtic shortstop on a ground ball by Flaherty pushed one run across and Christian Stamets took a pitch in the back to drive in the other run, but the Irish would leave the bases loaded again.

Eller got the nod on the mound, and was able to work his way out of a jam in the bottom of the 1st, allowing only a single run on a single, double and a walk. However, he was not able to work out of several jams in the second, allowing 6 runs on 7 hits and that would be all for Eller who took the loss, only his first of the year. Simonton came on in relief, and allowed a single run in the third, and pitched a 1-2-3 4th, before the Celts got to him in the 5th to close out the game. The Irish defense didn’t help out the pitching staff as they committed three errors behind them.

The Green Silver & White will defend Irish Field on Wednesday against Marysville, in the last conference game. With a win, the Irish will be co-champs of the OCC Cardinal.

JV Falls to Jerome

Irish Field – The final score of Monday's game against the Celtics, Dublin Jerome winning by a final score of 20-5, doesn't indicate that it actually was a better game than that, as it was only 7-5 going into the sixth. Further details not available.

Patriots Take Revenge On Irish Varsity

Friday, April 30th ~ Dublin – The Patriots of Olentangy showed why they were ranked so highly in the state polls earlier in the year, pounding out 13 hits and scoring 9 times in defeating Dublin Scioto by a final score of 9-6. A ray of sunshine came into the press box late in the game as word spread that Marysville had upset Dublin Jerome, allowing Scioto to maintain it’s 1 game lead in the conference despite losing tonight. A win on Monday night against the Celtics, would clinch at least a share of the Cardinal division championship for Scioto.

Charlie Suich started on the bump for the Irish and battled right from the get go. He never seemed to find his rhythm, and the Liberty bats had their way, scoring 5 earned runs off of Suich. Suich struck out 4 in his 3 plus innings of work. Thomas Hayes would come off the bench to relieve Suich, and didn't fare much better, giving up a home run to the first hitter he faced. That would be all the damage the Patriots would do off of Hayes, as he retired the next 3 hitters to close the 4th, then worked his way around a pair of base hits and a one out first and third situation by striking out the leadoff hitter on a nasty curve that buckled his knees, and a soft liner to centerfield. Matt Martin would come in from center field to pitch the final 2 innings, battling out of a bases loaded jam in the 7th, suffering the hard luck loss.

Offensively, Austin Mooney led the way with three singles (all with 2 strikes), 2 RBI’s and a run scored. Kris Simonton had a triple, double, a pair of RBI’s and a run scored. Martin was on base three times with a pair of singles, and a walk, he stole a base and scored in the first inning. Suich got on base twice with a single and was hit by a pitch. Seth Eller added a monster triple in the bottom of the 5th. Sean Thomas would walk in the 2nd, steal second and score.

The Irish take on Watkins Memorial in a Saturday non-conference double header scheduled to start at noon, from Irish Field

JV Blows Out Patriots

Powell – Dublin Scioto scored 13 times in the top of the first inning to put a quick end to their game, winning by a final score of 16-6 in a run-rule shortened 5 inning game. The Irish pounded out 15 hits on their way to the victory.

The offense came from everyone in the line-up as Scioto nearly batted around TWICE in the first inning. The first 9 batters reached base safely before the first out was recorded, the Irish sent 17 men to the plate in their half of the inning. Defensively, Scioto played error free ball, and Zack Gerrasch was a hero saving at least two runs with his running catch down the left field line. Very, very nice catch!!!

AJ Barnhardt got the start on the mound, and went 1 2/3 giving up 5 runs. Stevie Carter came on in relief in the second and gave up only one run over 3 1/3. Carter would get credited with the win, his first of the year, as Barnhardt didn't log enough innings.

The Irish look to continue the hot hitting, when they host Dublin Jerome at Irish Field on Monday.

Freshman Lose In Shootout to Liberty

Powell ~ The wind was blowing out at Wrigley, er, um, Liberty Field, and the host Patriots won a 25-23 slugfest over the Irish. Both teams relentlessly pounded the ball but the Irish just came up short in the 7th inning. Lots of heroes at the plate for the Irish: Aaron Strausbaugh scored 5 runs; Will Houston had 2 triples and 3 RBIs; Chance Dummitt scored 4 runs and Brayden Pfeiffer had 3 RBIs as did both Taylor Dyson and Matt Vogel. Credit both teams as they battled hard in the twilight at Liberty Field. More props to Houston for a fine defensive effort behind the plate.

The Irish scored early and often, putting up 3 runs right in the top of the first: Strausbaugh singled scoring Dyson, Dummitt singled scoring Strausbaugh and Houston tripled, scoring Dummitt. Scioto would then put 10 runs on the board in the 2nd: as Dyson had 2 hits in the inning, Pfeiffer, Carl Kubalak and Riley Bush added singles; Matt Vogel was hit by a pitch for a tough RBI, and a wild pitch and an error by the catcher added to the merry-go-round. The Irish would score 3 more in the top of the 3rd building a 16-2 lead when a Pfeiffer single, the Houston triple and a wild pitch scored Dummitt, Pfeiffer and Houston. However, the Liberty bats woke up with a vengeance in the bottom of the 3rd, scoring 5 runs to eat into the Irish lead.

Scioto would add another run in the top of the 4th when Vogel singled scoring Strausbaugh. That’s when Liberty batted around in consecutive innings, turning a 17-7 deficit into a 24-21 lead. In the top of the 5th, the Irish plated 4 more on singles by Strausbaugh and Houston, an error by the Liberty shortstop and a wild pitch. The Irish would not score in the 6th and added a pair in the top of the 7th when singles by Dummitt and Vogel scoring Strausbaugh and Dummitt, but it would prove to not be enough.

Johnny All-Staff made his second appearance in as many nights on the hill with all of the base hits. Dummitt, Nick Tizzano, Dyson and Adam Padovan combined to pitch the 6 innings for the Irish. They struck out 6 on the night, but the Patriot bats were just too much.

The Irish look to rebound on Saturday as they travel to Watkins Memorial for a non-conference doubleheader.

Varsity Coasts To Easy Win Over Central

Wednesday, April 28th ~ Westerville – The Scioto Irish varsity got back on the winning track in a big way, with a 10-0 shutout of the Westerville Central Warhawks. Seth Eller continued his scoreless inning streak, dating back to April 9th against Westerville North.

Eller pitched 5 strong innings, spacing out 5 hits, and 2 walks, and striking out 5 in picking up his 5th win of the year. He walked the first batter of the game, but then after one pitch to the plate, Eller picked off the base runner. The only real threat came in the third, a leadoff single was erased on a nice double play turned by Kris Simonton and Sean Thomas, and then a pair of singles and a walk had the bases loaded. But Eller worked his way out of the jam, inducing soft fly ball to center field. Brandon Marker came on in relief and pitched a scoreless 6th, getting a called third strike on the Warhawk batter leaving the bases loaded. Josh Nelsen pitched a scoreless 7th striking out 2.

The offense came from everywhere in the line-up tonight. Charlie Suich led the way with 3 singles, a double an RBI and he scored twice. Nick Keeley had a pair of singles with 3 RBI’s, Sean Thomas got on base and scored all three times he came to the plate as he was hit by a pitch, singled and walked. Matt Martin Doubled and walked and scored twice, Eller added three singles, Simonton, Chase Thompson and Dom Rosso chipped in a single, double and single for the cause.

Scioto hosts Olentangy Liberty on Friday night at 5:00 as they hit the home stretch of the OCC Cardinal conference race maintaining their 1 game lead over Dublin Jerome, who they will play on Monday.

JV Fall To Warhawks

Dublin – The Scioto JV team dropped a rough one to the Warhawks of Westerville Central by a final score of 7-2. They had plenty of opportunities but ran themselves out of an inning, and once again, that key base hit was elusive, as Scioto stranded 14 base runners.

Phillip Parrott took the hill and pitched a complete game, allowing only 3 earned runs, striking out 3 and allowing no walks, and was saddled with the tough luck loss.

The Irish plated the first of their two runs on an RBI double by Stevie Carter that scored Parrott. Parrott would later drive in AJ Barnhardt with an RBI single. Parrott led the Irish offense with three singles, and Zach Gerrasch chipped in with two singles of his own.

The Irish take to the field next on Friday night as they travel north to visit the Patriots of Olentangy Liberty, at 5:00.

Freshmen Rally Falls Short In Loss To Central

Dublin ~ Scioto's freshmen rallied from 7 down in the bottom of the 7th to but the rally fell short, losing 13-11 to Westerville Central. Scioto jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the 1st thanks to Chance Dummitt's first HR of the season. Scioto made it 4-1 before the Warhawks came roaring back to take a 13-6 lead into the bottom of the 7th. Scioto fought valiantly but couldn't quite pull it out. Congratulations to Taylor Dyson for scoring 4 runs and Aaron Strausbaugh for his 4 RBIs. Adam Padovan scored 2 runs and Dummitt had 2 RBIs. Once again the outfield turned in a solid defensive effort. The loss drops the Irish record to 9-8.

Johnny All-Staff was on the mound tonight. Brayden Pfeiffer got the start and went 4 innings striking out a pair. Nick Tizzano, Austin Troyer, Dummitt and Dyson combined to pitch the last 3 innings.

In the first inning, the Irish scored a pair of runs when a Strausbaugh ground out scored Dyson and Dummitt hit his first home run. In the second, the Irish would add another pair as Riley Bush had a 2 run single driving in Padovan and Dyson. Scioto plated another pair in the 5th as this time a 2 run single by Strausbaugh scores Padovan and Dyson. The big inning cam ein the bottom of the 7th, Strausbaugh singled and scored Nathan Reiser, a single by Dummitt scores Dyson, a Tizzano ground out scores Bush, and a single by Will Houston brought in Strausbaugh and Dummitt to end the scoring.

The Irish look to rebound on Friday as they travel to Olentangy Liberty.

Varsity Falls to North, Tightening Up Cardinal Race

Tuesday, April 27th ~ Westerville – Dublin Scioto manufactured a few runs early before erupting for 3 runs in the top of the 6th to take a 6-5 lead, but allowed a pair of runs in the bottom of the 7th to drop a close game to the Westerville North Warriors by a final score of 7-6. The Irish were unable to take full advantage of some early scoring opportunities, ran themselves out of a couple of innings, and left 7 runners on base, 5 of them in scoring position. The loss drops the Irish record to 14-5 overall, 8-2 in the conference, still maintaining a slim one game lead over Dublin Jerome, who defeated Westerville South tonight.

Kris Simonton had a yeoman’s outing, allowing 5 runs in his 5 innings of work, and left the game with the lead, and in position to pick up the win. He spaced out 8 hits, walked only 1 and struck out 4 on the night. The highlight of his outing came in the bottom of the 4th. With North threatening, runners on first and second and 1 out, the North batter squared to bunt as the runners took off. The bunt was popped in front of the mound, Simonton charged and dove for it and caught. At this point the runners were standing on 2nd and third and he had an easy choice to first or second to double off either runner to end the inning.

Offensively the Irish were led by Sean Thomas who was 3 for 3, with a pair of singles, 3 RBIs, stole a base and also scored a run. His big hit was a double driving in 2 runs in the top of the 6th to tie the game at 5. He would come around to score on an infield ground out. Nick Keeley added three singles of his own, and scored a pair. Matt Martin started the scoring after a walk, the Irish parlayed another walk, a sacrifice fly and a groundout into their first run. Charlie Suich doubled in Austin Mooney, who had walked, in the 5th. Simonton and Keeley led off the 6th with back to back singles, were sacrificed over the 3rd by Thomas Hayes before Sean Thomas’ big hit drove them both in.

Scioto will continue their tour of Westerville on Wednesday night, when they take on the Warhawks of Westerville Central. As usual, the first pitch is scheduled for 5:00.

Irish JV Defeats North In Close Game

Dublin – Another night more suitable for a football game than a baseball game saw Dublin Scioto defeat the Warriors of Westerville North by a score of 3-1. The win moves the Irish record to 7-10 overall and bumps it’s OCC Cardinal record to 4-6.

Nick Berg pitched a complete game, and picked up a win in his first decision of the year. He dominated the Warriors scattering a mere 3 hits and striking out 5.

The Warriors got the scoring going in the top of the 2nd with an unearned run. The Irish tied the game in the bottom of the 2nd as AJ Barnhardt, Phillip Parrott and Nolan Wehner singled to load the bases. Dustin Marker then worked a base loaded walked for the RBI and the lone run of the inning. In the third, the Irish scored again as Brian Cook walked and scored on a RBI double by Barnhardt. The Irish scored their final run as Marker walked, moved to second on a Stevie Carter walk, and then advanced to third and scored on a pair of wild pitches.

The Irish continue their homestand on Wednesday hosting the Westerville Central Warhawks at 5:00.

Irish Rally To Beat Canfield

Saturday, April 24th ~ Dublin – After Friday night’s version of a quick game, Dublin Scioto and Canfield played a game of Red Sox/Yankee speed… slow. In a game that approached three hours, more than twice the amount of time required to complete Friday’s game, due to the number of base runners and pitching changes by both squads, the Irish rallied for 5 runs in the bottom of the 5th to defeat the Cardinals of Canfield by a final score of 8-5.

The Irish drew first blood in the bottom of the 1st when Seth Eller singled, stole second, went to third on an overthrow and was driven in by Austin Mooney with a key 2 out single. Canfield answered with a run in their half of the 2nd on a single, sacrifice bunt and 2 passed balls. The Cardinals would then take the lead in the 3rd scoring a pair on 4 singles. Scioto would then tie it up in the bottom of the 3rd on a single and double by Thomas Hayes and Sean Thomas. A single by Matt Martin would drive in Hayes, and a fielder’s choice by Christian Stamets plated Thomas.

Canfield took the lead back with a 2 run home run in the top of the 5th, but Scioto would respond and bat around in the bottom of the 5th scoring 5 times. Hayes led off with a walk, and Thomas and Martin followed with singles to load the bases. Eller walked in the first run, Mooney singled to right driving in Thomas and Martin ahead of Eller who scored when the throw from right fielder skipped past the catcher, and Dom Rosso running for Mooney, would score all the way from 2nd on a throwing error by the Cardinal shortstop on Charlie Suich’s groundball.

On the mound, Mooney pitched 3 innings with the start. Brandon Marker would come on in relief in the 4th and would pick up the win, his first of the year. Kris Simonton and Hayes would combine to pitch the final two innings, Hayes getting the final out of the game on a called third strike picking up his second save.

After the off day on Sunday, the Green, Silver & White return to action on Monday at 5:00, traveling to Westerville North to take on the Warriors in an OCC Cardinal match-up in the first game of a 3 game road trip.

Varsity Wins Pitching Dual Against Westerville South 2-1

Friday, April 23rd ~ Dublin – In yet another pitcher’s dual with Westerville South, Scioto scratched out a victory in a game that only lasted 1 hour and 20 minutes. Some reports had the Wildcats back at school, showered and in their cars on their way home before the JV game finished. The victory has Scioto firmly in first place in the OCC Cardinal with a two game lead over both South and cross town rival Dublin Jerome. They run their record to 13-4, and 8-1 in the league. Seth Eller led the offense with a single and huge triple in the 6th knocking in the game winner. And defensively, the Irish received another gem on the hill from the pitching staff, this time from Charlie Suich, who picked up his 4th W.

Westerville South plated a run on 3 singles in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. They also got a pair of hits in the top of the second inning, but were unable to score. Those 5 hits would be all the offense the Wildcats would generate, as Suich once again was masterful on the mound. From that point on in the second, Suich settled in, and no hit the Wildcats the rest of the way, and retired the final 13 batters he faced.

Offensively, the Irish were not able to get much going either, as Westerville South’s ace, Brian Williams, baffled the Scioto bats, allowing only two runs for the second time in as many games against the Irish. Like the Wildcats, the Irish only had 5 hits, but this time, the 2 runs they scored turned out to be enough. Scioto scored a run in the 4th on a single by Eller, who stole second base and went to 3rd when the throw hit him and the ball bounced into short left field. Austin Mooney then walked and Suich grounded into a double play to scoring Eller. In the bottom of the 6th, the Scioto would plate the winning run on a walk to Matt Martin, a sacrifice bunt by Tyler Flaherty and then a triple by Eller to right center to score Martin. South went 1-2-3 in the top of the 7th on a fly out to center, a groundout to Charlie and another grounder to Eller at first who flipped the ball to Suich covering for the last out.

Scioto will host a pair of teams at Irish field on Saturday taking on the Panthers of Pickerington North at 10:00, then the Canfield Cardinals at approximately 3:00. The Cardinals and North will face each other in the second game of the scheduled triple-header.

JV Drop Slugfest To South 13-9

Westerville – Once again, the Scioto defense is their Achilles’ heel, in allowing a number of un-earned runs in falling to the Westerville South Wildcats by a final score of 13-9. They battled back from an 8 run deficit and made it close, but in the end just couldn’t muster enough offense to overcome the early hole they had dug for themselves, and Brian Cook was unable to work out of a rough first inning taking the tough luck loss.

The Irish spotted the Wildcat an 8-1 lead after 1. In the top of the first, Stevie Carter reached on an error, stole second and later scored on a wild pitch. Although the Wildcat offense didn't hit many hard shots in the bottom of the first, the balls seemed to find the holes in the defense each time as they parlayed two infield hits and other weak singles, along with walks to plate the 8 runs.

The Irish plated 4 in the second as Nick Smith delivered a two out RBI single after five Irish batters had walked. The Irish added three more in the third as Carter doubled home two after Nathan Callender had singled and Zach Gerrasch walked. Carter later scored on Smith's single to left field, his 3rd RBI on the night. Nolan Wehner kept the Irish close allowing one unearned run in 5 relief innings of work.

The Irish are back in action on Saturday hosting the Pick North Panthers and the Canfield Cardinals, weather permitting.

Freshman Come From Behind Several Times To Beat South

Westerville ~ Scioto outlasted a scrappy Westerville South squad for a 7-5 win, coming from behind in the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings, overcoming deficits of 3-1, 4-3 and 5-4. The Irish scored 2 runs in the top of the 6th to finally take the lead, and added an insurance run in the top of the 7th for the final. With this win, the Irish run their record to 9-7, and 6-3 in the conference, and they notched their first road win of the season.

Carl Kubalak started on the hill, and worked 3 1/3 innings, striking out 4. Taylor Dyson came out of the bullpen in the 4th and struck out 3 in closing out the game’s final 3 2/3 innings, picking up his first W of the year!

The Irish started the scoring in the 2nd when Pfeiffer scored on a sacrifice flyball off the bat of Kubalak. In the 4th Scioto plated a pair as Vogel singled in Brayden Pfeiffer, and later scored off of another sacrifice fly, this time by Dyson. The Irish scratched out another run in the 5th when a Will Houton single chased home Chance Dummitt. A fielder’s choice, and a double by Aaron Strausbaugh scored Kubalak and Nick Tizzano in the 6th. Scioto capped the scoring with a lone run in the top of the 7th on a Vogel single which scored Houston.

Big props to Taylor Dyson for his clutch relief pitching, and give it up to Matt Vogel for 2 RBI and a run scored. Carl Kubalak added 3.1 innings and had an RBI and scored a run. Brayden Pfeiffer also scored a pair of runs.

The young Irish will hit the road Saturday taking on Pickerington North in a double header scheduled to start at noon, weather permitting.

Varsity Hammers Olentangy

Wednesday, April 21st ~ Lewis Center – With a picture perfect afternoon for a ball game, the Irish were successful in every facet of the game: they had timely hitting; aggressive base running; solid defense and another dominant pitching performance. Scioto opened the scoring with 3 runs in the top of the 2nd inning, and continued to build from there while holding the Olentangy Braves scoreless, winning by a final score of 8-0. The victory was the third shutout in the last 4 games, and raises the Irish record to 12-4, and 7-1 in the conference.

Seth Eller was given the nod this afternoon to take the hill, and he dominated from start to finish as he picked up the complete game shutout victory, his fourth W of the year. Seth spaced out 3 Braves hits and only walked 1, and he struck out 6 in his 7 innings of work. Eller hasn’t given up a run since April 9th against Westerville North.

The Irish offense got things going in the second inning taking advantage of a couple of Olentangy miscues. Brandon Marker was safe at first on an error by the second baseman, and then stole second, (way to protect your runner, Simo!) Kris Simonton would walk, and then both of them would come around to score when Nick Keeley hit a line-shot over the second baseman which the Olentangy right fielder misplayed the ball, and it rolled all the way to the fence allowing Keeley to come into third. He would later score on a single by Tyler Flaherty.

In the third, Scioto would parlay a hit batter, a walk and a single into a pair of runs when Simonton hit a sharp bases loaded single to right scoring Austin Mooney, which the outfielder again misplayed allowing Charlie Suich to score. Simonton would then steal second, and then another timely hit with Matt Martin delivering a 2 out single to score Brandon Marker and Simonton. The Irish would cap the scoring in the 4th when a bomb to the right field gap by Marker chased Mooney all the way from first. The lopsided score allowed Coach Marple to unload his bench in the later innings and got everybody in the dugout an at bat except for Coach Rock!

The Irish return home on Friday night, to defend their first place position in the OCC Cardinal against the Wildcats of Westerville South, at Irish Field at 5:00. As of press time, South has only lost 2 games in the conference so this should be a big battle.

JV Scalped By Braves

Dublin – There are some nights that you just have to put in your rear view mirror, look ahead, and move on. That’s the case tonight, as the JV suffered a sound thrashing at the hands of the Olentangy Braves at Irish Field by a score of 15-0. The loss drops their record to 6-9 overall, and 3-5 in the Cardinal Conference.

The Irish couldn't seem to get anything going offensively tonight securing only a few base hits, and the Braves bats were ready early scoring 8 runs in the first. They did not let up at that, and kept building to close the game early.

It’s important to remember that everybody has bad days at the office, and it’s how one responds to adversity that sets one apart. Tomorrow will bring new opportunity, and our guys will need to be confident in their ability to grasp it!

The troops will get back at it in practice on Thursday and get a day off from competition to try and figure things out. Scioto will try and get the ship righted in an OCC Cardinal road match-up against Westerville South Friday night at 5:00.

Freshmen Take Crazy Win From Olentangy 14-13

Dublin ~ Wow! A walk-off bases loaded single scored 3 runs including the game winner as Dublin Scioto rallied to a 14-13 win over the Olentangy Braves. After the Irish took a 5-0 lead after 3, the talented Olentangy Braves rallied to take a leads of 6-5, and 8-5, and would go to the bottom of the 7th leading by a score of 13-11. However, the Fighting Irish would not quit, and rallied with 2 outs for a tough win over a squad that won in a run-rule romp earlier in the season.

Chance Dummitt pitched 5 innings and struck out 3 in a non-decision. Austin Troyer came on in relief to pitch the final 2 innings to pick up the win.

In the second, an Aaron Best ground out scores Will Houston, and Carl Kubalak drilled one to right field and hit his first home run of the season. Way to go Carl! In the third a Dummitt single scores Riley Bush and Aaron Strausbaugh, and then a Houston single, scored Dummitt. The Irish entered the 5th trailing 8-5, but re-took the lead when a double by Dummitt and singles by Brayden Pfeiffer and Adam Padovan drove home Strausbaugh, Dummitt and Nick Tizzano. A wild pitch and an error on the catcher allowed Matt Vogel and Padovan to score. The Irish scored a lone tally in the bottom of the 6th when a sacrifice fly ball off the bat of Houston brought in Strausbaugh

The hit of the night was the walk-off single by Dummitt scoring Carl Kubalak, Bush and Strausbaugh. Dummitt's hit came on a full count and capped a busy day for him as he pitched 5 innings, scored 2 runs and drove in 6 runs. Strausbaugh scored 4 runs including the game winner. Houston also drove in 2 runs. Best showed toughness, stopping a line shot down first and making the out despite getting a bloody nose.

The victory raises the Irish record to one game over .500 at 8-7, and moves their conference record 2 games up at 5-3. The Comeback Kids continue league play on Friday, traveling to Westerville South. Good job Irish!

JV Falls to Jerome

Plain City – On a great night for baseball, the Irish ended up on the short end after a see-saw game at Dublin Jerome, losing to the Celtics by a final score of 11-6 in an OCC Cardinal game. The loss drops the JV record to 6-8 overall, 3-4 in conference play.

The Irish took a 3-0 lead in the top of the 3rd as Brian Cook doubled, Stevie Carter had a bunt single and Nick Smith loaded the bases with a walk. Chase Thompson then delivered a two RBI double. The Celtics battled back with 4 runs in the 4th as a two out, two run triple and a throwing error led to three of the four runs.

Not to be outdone, the Irish scored two in the top of the 5th to make it 6-5 as a hit batsmen and a Celtic error aided in the scoring. Josh Nelsen delivered a ground out RBI. The Celtics then answered in their half of the 5th scoring 7 times to take command of the game. Once again, the JV Irish were their own worst enemy allowing 6 unearned runs. The Irish rounded out the scoring in the 6th as Jacob Nau singled and scored on a sac fly by Thompson.

Phillip Parrott took the hill and struck out 5 in 5 innings of work, taking the collar for the loss.

The JV squad takes to Irish Field for their next contest, hosting the Olentangy Braves, Wednesday night at 5:00.

Freshmen Lose Close One To Jerome

Dublin Jerome ~ Nick Tizzano kept the game close for 5 1/3 innings. Great effort on the mound. Unfortunately, Scioto couldn't get the bats going to overcome a 2-1 deficit. Brayden Pfeiffer singled to drive in Taylor Dyson, the only run, in the top of the 6th.

The Irish will host the Olentangy Braves Wednesday afternoon at 5:00.

Varsity Wins Close One In Marysville

Monday, April 19th ~ Marysville – The Irish weren’t quite firing on all cylinders offensively, but did what they needed to do to win the OCC Cardinal match-up against the Marysville Monarch squad by a final score of 3 to 0. With the road win, first place Dublin Scioto runs their overall record to 11-4, and 6-1 in the conference. The bats didn’t have too much work to do on this night because the pitching was outstanding for Scioto.

Charlie Suich was dominant allowing no hits, and striking out 7 in his three innings of work, picking up his 3rd win in as many starts. Kris Simonton came on and pitched the final 4 innings and was just as effective keeping the Monarchs scoreless in picking up the 4 inning save, his first of the year. The only real scoring threat for Marysville was in the bottom of the third inning when a single, a wild pitch and a walk put runners at first and second with 1 out. But Simonton struck out the next hitter on a nasty curveball in the dirt, and got the last out on a slow roller to short to end the threat.

Scioto scored lone tallies in the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings, and that would prove to be all the scoring they would need. Matt Martin singled and stole second and then would score on an error by the Monarch shortstop in the 3rd. In the 4th, Suich led off and was hit by a pitch. Brandon Marker moved him to second with a ground out to 2nd, and Christian Stamets drove in Suich with a double down the left field line. In the 5th, Tyler Flaherty would triple to right, and score on Seth Eller’s sacrifice fly ball to left. Sean Thomas added a pair of singles to the effort.

The Green, Silver and White take to the road, heading up to Lewis Center to take on the Olentangy Braves on Wednesday at 5:00.

JV Romps Over Marysville

Dublin – The JV Irish win their second game in a row, 9-2 over the visiting Marysville Monarchs running their record to 6-7 on the season, and 3-3 in the league. Once again the Irish took advantage of an opponent’s wildness working five Monarch walks in the first inning, and parlayed one hit in the first and one hit in the second into 8 runs!!

After scoring 4 times in the 1st by virtue of 1 hit, in the second inning the Irish turned 3 walks, two hit batsmen and a Monarch error into another four runs as Tom Ansley drove in two with a two out single for the only hit of that inning. The Irish rounded out their scoring in the fourth inning as Phillip Parrott led off the inning with a single and later scored on a Stevie Carter double. Carter continued his hot hitting, going 2 for 3 with an RBI.

AJ Barnhardt pitched five innings for the Irish win, scattering four Monarch hits in 5 innings of work while striking out 3 and walking 5. Zach Gerrasch came in to pitch the 6th and 7th innings recording the save and allowing one hit.

The Irish will be back in OCC Cardinal League action on Tuesday at 5:00, traveling to Dublin Jerome to make-up Friday night’s game that was rained out.

Freshmen Victory Completes Sweep Of Marysville

Dublin ~ The Irish blew open a tight 5-4 game to win 12-4 over the Marysville Monarchs. Chance Dummitt scored 4 runs, beating out 2 ground balls for infield hits. Brayden Pfeiffer drove in 2 runs as did Matt Vogel, who also played solid defense in center field. Will Houston also drove in 2 runs. The Irish continue their winning streak, now at 4 games.

Pfeiffer struck out 4 in his outing of 5 quality innings picking up his second win of the year. Austin (Mariano) Troyer once again delivered in relief tossing a pair of scoreless innings in a non-save situation.

Marysville scored 1st in the top of the 1st inning, the Irish responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the 2nd when Houston singled, scoring Dummitt, followed by a Vogel triple, scoring Houston. Marysville would retake the lead with a pair in the top of the 3rd, but the Irish would retake the lead for good in the bottom of the inning with a Pfeiffer single scored Riley Bush. A wild pitch allowed Dummitt to score and an Aaron Best single chased Pfeiffer home. IN the 5th, Dummit would score on another wild pitch and Pfeiffer was brought home on a Houston single. The Irish would put up a 5 spot in the bottom of the 6th when Taylor Dyson scored on an error by the Monarch third baseman, singles by Pfeiffer and Vogel plated Bush and Dummitt, Houston stole home and Vogel trotted home with the game’s final run, driven in on a single by Adam Padovan.

Tuesday afternoon at 5, the freshmen go to Jerome to take on the Celtics making up Friday night’s rainout.

Varsity Splits Battle Of Dublin

Saturday, April 17th ~ Dublin Coffman – As usual, the weather was miserable, cold and blustery, for the Battle of Dublin, the only thing missing this year was the rain. The tournament ended up in an even split as all three teams went 1-1. After Dublin Scioto beat Dublin Jerome 12-0 in game 1, Dublin Coffman held on in a close battle to beat Scioto 3-2. In the third game, Dublin Jerome came from behind overcoming a 5 run deficit late in the game to defeat Coffman by a final of 7-5.

The Dublin Scioto bats showed up to play against Dublin Jerome, and made quick work of the Celtics winning in 5 innings by a score of 12-0. This game was designated as the make-up OCC Cardinal League game that was rained out Friday night. The Irish pounded out 13 hits in the game, and the score could have been much worse as the Irish stranded 8 base runners in their 4 innings of offense.

Seth Eller was economical in his effort keeping his pitch count in the low 60’s on the day. The Celts were only able to mount 1 real scoring threat. In the top of the third inning, after the first two batters were out, a walk and a pair of infield singles loaded the bases. But an 8 pitch strikeout of the Jerome designated hitter ended the threat with no damage. In the top of the first, a leadoff base-runner by virtue of a single up the middle was quickly erased as Charlie Suich gunned down the runner trying to steal second base. Eller retired the final 7 batters in a row, with 6 straight ground ball outs to end the game, picking up his 3rd win on the year.

The Irish offense was clicking starting right in the first inning. A leadoff single by Matt Martin saw the Irish’s first base runner. He would advance to second on a ground out, and would score on an Austin Mooney single up the middle. The Irish would bat around in each of the next 3 innings, scoring 3 runs in the 2nd on base hits by Christian Stamets, Kris Simonton and Eller. The Irish would plate 4 in the 4th on singles by Simonton, Brandon Marker, Tyler Flaherty and Eller. The Irish would wrap up the scoring with 4 more runs in the bottom of the 4th with hits by Stamets, Sean Thomas and Austin Mooney. The Irish didn’t have any extra base hits, but took full advantage of 3 Celtic errors, a couple wild pitches, two hit batsmen and stole a pair of bases on the day. Martin was on base and scored all 4 times with a pair of singles, was safe on an error and was hit by a pitch.

Game 2 against the Rocks of Dublin Coffman, was a much different story. Offensively, Scioto just could not get anything going. The Irish were only able to muster 5 hits in the game as the Coffman pitchers used a lot of off speed and breaking pitches to keep the Irish bats at bay. The Irish battled back and tied the game in the top of the 7th, only to allow Coffman an ugly run in the bottom of the 7th for the final score of 3-2.

The Irish scored their first run in the third, when Charlie Suich singled, stole second and then scored on a single by Simonton. The only other run for the Irish came in the top of the 7th, when Marker singled, and advance to second base when the Coffman right fielder misplayed the ball, and scored on a double by Martin to tie the game at 2. But Martin would be stranded at 3rd ending the threat.

Mooney started on the mound for the Green, Silver & White, and only allowed 3 hits and a pair of runs, striking out 3 in his 5 innings of work. Thomas Hayes came on in relief in the 6th, and took the tough luck loss. Defensively, Martin made possibly the play of the year, with a diving catch on the warning track robbing the Coffman batter of at least two bases.

The Irish hit the road Monday, traveling to Marysville for their next contest, to complete the first round of OCC Cardinal play. First pitch at 5:00.

JV Upend Rocks In Wild One

Jerome – The Irish trailed Coffman heading into the top of the 7th 7-6 and scored 6 times to score the comeback victory, winning the abbreviated Battle of Dublin. Scioto capitalized on wildness by Coffman pitchers, and got a couple of key, timely base hits, the big one a key two run double off the bat of Zach Gerracsh in the top of the 7th, to beat the Rocks in a wild affair 12-8 to run their record to 5-7.

Brian Cook pitched 6 solid innings allowing only two earned runs. He scattered six hits, and struck out 4 Rock batters in picking up his first win of the year.

Early in the game, the Irish took advantage of 8 Coffman walks, and 3 hit batsmen to score their first six runs. But the Irish entered the top of the 7th down by a run. Nate Gastaldo led off the inning with a single, and Tom Ansley and Nolan Wehner reached on an error and walk, respectively. With the Irish lacking for key hits lately, Gerrasch stepped up and delivered a double to deep left center and the Irish never looked back, scoring a total of 6 runs to take a 12-6 lead into the bottom of the frame. Scioto was able to hold on and came out victorious.

The Irish will be back in OCC Cardinal League action on Monday, hosting the Monarchs of Marysville at 5:00.

Freshmen Beat Coffman In Windy Contest At Irish Field

Scioto ~ The Irish continued their winning ways, beating Coffman 9-3 in their only contest of the Battle of Dublin. Chance Dummitt and Austin Troyer combined to put together a fine pitching performance, aided by excellent defense led by Austin Troyer and Riley Bush. The Irish were opportunistic, capitalizing on Coffman mistakes to manufacture runs. Troyer scored 2 runs, Matt Vogel, Aaron Best and Aaron Strausbaugh each scored and drove in a run as well.

In the bottom of the second inning, Scioto scored 3 runs to take the lead. A fielder's choice led off the scoring allowing Vogel to trot home. A bases loaded hit-by-pitch of Riley bush gives him an RBI the hard way. Aaron Strausbaugh singles home Troyer. The Irish tacked on single runs in the 3rd, 4th and 5th: a double off the bat of Best drove in Vogel; a wild pitch plated Bush and a double by Taylor Dyson brought home Troyer. In the bottom of the 6th, the Irish closed out the scoring when Strausbaugh scored on an error by the centerfielder, a wild pitch chased Dummitt home, and a Vogel double plated Nick Tizzano with the final run of the game.

Dummit drew the start on the mound, striking out a pair of Rocks in his 5 innings of work. Troyer pitched a scoreless 6th and 7th to pick up his second save in as many appearances.

With the victory, the Irish evened their record at 6-6, and hope to extend their current 3 game win streak Monday against Marysville, at the Irish Field of Dreams.

Gastaldo To Miss Rest Of Season Due To Injury

Nick Gastaldo will probably miss the rest of the season as a result of an injury suffered late in the game on Wednesday night, against Olentangy Liberty. Nick was struck in the face by a pitch when he squared to bunt. The pitch rode high and inside and Nick unsuccessfully tried to duck out of the way. The pitch hit the brim of his helmet first, and glanced down driving into his jaw, breaking it in two places.

Nick had reconstructive surgery on Thursday night which was successful. He had plates inserted on both sides of his jaw, and his haw will be wired shut for a minimum of 2 weeks. After that, he will have a follow up with Dr’s and they will determine if they can or will loosen the jaw.

Nick was released from the hospital this afternoon, and is recovering at home. Per mom, “Nick is upset about missing the rest of the season…” and “so visitors are welcome and encouraged.”

The Irish Family will keep you in our thoughts, Nick. Here’s to your grit, and strength, and best wishes to a speedy recovery.

Irish Varsity Use Late Inning Rally To Upset Patriots

Wednesday, April 14th ~ Powell – The Dublin Scioto bats got a late wake-up call, but they woke up in time to put together a pair of late inning rallies, scoring twice in the top of the 6th, and then batting around in the top of the 7th to plate 5 runs to upset the state ranked Patriots of Olentangy Liberty by a final score of 8-4. Charlie Suich pitched a complete game to pick up his second win in only his second start of the season. Suich also helped out his own cause at the plate with a walk, a single and a triple driving in 3 runs.

In the bottom of the first, a lead-off homerun put the Patriots on top quickly by a score of 1-0. In the top of the 2nd, things looked good for the Irish as they loaded the bases with nobody out, after a walk by Suich, a single up the middle by Brandon Marker and a bunt single by Christian Stamets. But the Irish were only able to scratch out a single run on a ground out by Nick Gastaldo. A pair of walks and a double led to a pair of runs for Olentangy in the bottom of the 3rd as they expanded took the lead 3-1. In the bottom of the 5th, the Patriots tacked on another run with a triple and a sacrifice fly.

With the score 4-1, the Irish started to battle back in the top of the 6th. Designated hitter Austin Mooney started things rolling with a walk. Tyler Flaherty followed with a single, and then Suich singled driving in Mooney. Marker Followed with a single of his own scoring Flaherty making the score 4-3. Suich retired the Patriots in order on the bottom of the 6th. In the top of the 7th, Sean Thomas led off with a walk. Thomas stole 2nd, and then Gastaldo was hit by a pitch, and would have to leave the game. A single by Matt Martin scored Thomas. A sharp single to the left side by Kris Simonton drove home Chase Thompson, who entered the game for Gastaldo. Another single by Flaherty brought in Martin. Charlie Suich capped the scoring with a stand-up triple to right field scoring Simonton and Flaherty making the score 8-4.

Suich came out in the bottom of the 7th, and overpowered the Olentangy hitters, striking out the side. Suich would only allow 4 hits on the evening, spacing out a team-cycle for the Patriots, a single, a double, a triple and a homerun. He would walk 2, struck out 4, and retired the final 8 hitters he faced on the night.

The first place Irish take on the Dublin Jerome Celtics, for another battle for first place, on Friday night at Irish field. First pitch will be at 5:00.

JV Drops Close One To Liberty

Dublin – On a night which saw the strike zone seemingly move between hitters, the Irish were tough luck losers taking a 5-3 loss to the Patriots. Both starters struggled with the strike zone and combined for 13 walks. Similar to the second game at Arlington, the Irish had plenty of base runners but couldn't get the key hit, leaving 10 runners stranded on the night.

The Irish scored one run in the first on a single by Brian Cook who later scored on a passed ball. The Irish plated two in the second as Tom Ansley and Phillip Parrott scored after singling as Zach Gerrasch and Nick Smith contributed RBIs with a hit batsman and fielder's choice, respectively. The Patriots plated 4 of their 5 runs in the third with two timely two out hits after other base runners reached on walks.

Phillip Parrott went 6 innings, allowing 4 runs and striking out 8. The Patriots scored an unearned run in the 7th off Stevie Carter to round out the scoring on the evening.

The Irish take to the road in their next game, facing the Dublin Jerome Celtics on Friday night at 5:00.

Freshmen Come From Behind & Hold On To Top Liberty

Dublin ~ Scioto rallied from a 4-1 deficit to claim an 8-7 win over Olentangy Liberty, running their record to 5-6. Brayden Pfeiffer pitched 5 strong innings and Austin Troyer added 2 innings of relief including a scoreless 7th inning. Aaron Strausbaugh jacked a 2 run homer into right field to lead the Irish comeback effort; he ended up with 3 RBIs for the game. Adam Padovan returned to the line-up off of the DL to hit a key 2 run double.

Liberty scored a single run in the top of the 2nd, and the Irish tied the game in the bottom of the 2nd, when a Will Houston single scores Chance Dummitt. In the third, Riley bush doubles in Aaron Best, and a fielder’s choice by Aaron Strausbaugh scores Taylor Dyson. The big inning came in the bottom of the 5th, when an error by the Liberty second baseman allowed Best to score, and then the big shots delivered by a Strausbaugh homerun scoring Bush in front of him, and then a two run double by Padovan scoring Dummitt and Pfeiffer.

Props to Taylor Dyson for his excellent defensive play at 2nd base. The entire team deserves kudos for not giving up, and battling back to pick up a gritty comeback win.

The young Irish will take their 3-2 League record on the road on Friday night, visiting the Dublin Jerome Celtics, in another OCC Cardinal League match-up.

Freshmen Defeat Dawgs In Close One

Dublin ~ As the only Scioto baseball team in action on Tuesday night, the Irish freshmen battled and scrapped their way to a 6-4 win over the Grove City Dawgs on the varsity field. The defense made key plays throughout the game and hung on for the win by a score of 6-4. Carl Kubalak pitched 4 and 2/3 tough innings to pick up his first win on the year, and Nick Tizzano came in with timely relief to finish the game and notch his first save. Kubalak and Tizzano combined for 5 strikeouts on the night.

Offensively, Chance Dummitt scored twice, and the Irish manufactured runs with aggressive base running. After allowing a go ahead run to the Dawgs in the top of the 2nd, Scioto responded to take the lead in the bottom of the frame when Dummitt and Brayden Pfeiffer scored on Aaron Best’s single. IN the third, the Irish were able to capitalize on an error by the Grove City shortstop to score Aaron Strausbaugh. The Irish capped the scoring in the 5th when Will Houston singled, scoring Dummitt, another error by the shortstop plated Austin Troyer, and then Houston stole home for the final run of the game.

The Irish return to action on Wednesday to host Olentangy Liberty in an OCC Cardinal game.

Varsity Outlasts Central in Slugfest

Monday, April 12th ~ Dublin – On a day that saw 18 runs and 23 hits, Scioto scored 9 runs in the first 2 innings, and then held on to outlast the Westerville Central Warhawks by a score of 10-8. Every position starter had at least one base hit for the Irish. Once again the Irish offense wore out the scoreboard with 13 hits, and they took advantage of a few timely errors by the Warhawk defense to pull out the victory.

The Warhawks scratched out a run in the top half of the first to take a 1-0- lead, but the Irish would battle back and send 8 men to the plate in scoring 4 runs to take the lead back, 4-1. Kris Simonton got the start for the home team, and pitched a yeoman’s first two innings. Working his way around a fluctuating strike zone, and was almost able to work his way out of a bases loaded jam in the second inning. But the big blow was a 2 out, full count homerun with the bases loaded. But the Irish would answer back in the bottom half of the inning and re-take the lead for good with 5 runs of their own. Nick Keeley, Josh Nelson would each pitch two effective innings, with Nelsen picking of the W. Brandon Marker came from behind the plate to take to the rubber in the 7th and pitch a scoreless inning to pick up the save.

Marker also had a 4 for 4 night at the plate, with 4 singles and three RBIs to pace the Irish. Nick Gastaldo was on base 4 times via a pair of base hits, a walk and was hit by a pitch once. Seth Eller had pair of hits and he too was hit by a pitch. Matt Martin also added a pair of singles. Gastaldo, Martin and Eller all scored two runs apiece. The Irish were a base hit away from blowing the game wide open several times, but once again, couldn’t get the timely base hit they needed, as they left the bases loaded in the 3rd and 4th, and hit into a bases loaded double play to end the 5th. They were able to scratch out a single run in the 5th inning by virtue of a pair of singles and a pair of walks to cap the scoring.

Scioto will take to the road, facing the Patriots of Olentangy Liberty on Wednesday night at 5:00. This game will be for the lead in the OCC Cardinal, as the Warriors of Westerville North handed state ranked Liberty their first loss of the year Monday night, dropping them into a tie for first with the Irish, and the Dublin Jerome Celtics, whom Dublin Scioto will face Friday night.

JV Cruises to 8-1 Win

Westerville – The Scioto JV team rebounded from a tough weekend with an all around solid effort in beating the Warhawks of Westerville Central 8-1, to raise their record to 4-6 on the year. The Irish were finally able to couple a strong pitching effort with solid defense.

Tom Ansley offered up a quality start, limiting the Warhawks to a single earned run. He pitched a complete game, allowing only 4 hits, striking out 6. The Irish defense, plagued by poor play of late, turned in a stellar effort behind Ansley, with only one error, which didn’t figure in the scoring.

The Irish offense was sparked by AJ Barnhardt, who was three for four, with 2 RBI's, 2 stolen bases and three runs scored. Chase Thompson also added two triples and two runs scored. Marking a triumphant return to the lineup after ear surgery was Nick Smith, who tripled in his first at bat.

The Irish take to the field next hosting the Patriots of Olentangy Liberty, at Irish Field, on Wednesday at 5:00.

Freshmen Fall To Westerville Central

Westerville ~ The Irish found themselves in a 6-0 hole and couldn't make up the ground in an 11-6 loss, dropping their record to 3-6. Aaron Best drove in a run and scored a run. Will Houston stroked a double and again played solid behind the plate. Jacob Nave took one for the team, getting nailed in the head by a pitch. But he played on! Way to go Jacob!

The freshmen Irish will play again on Tuesday night, hosting Grove City at 5:00.

Varsity Can Only Take One From Upper Arlington

Saturday, April 10th ~ Dublin – On a much better afternoon weather-wise than just a few hours before, for the Friday night game, the Dublin Scioto baseball team battled through a double-header, falling just short of taking a pair from the Upper Arlington Golden Bears. The Irish took the first game by a final score of 12-8, and then dropped the night cap by a score of 3-2. The first game was a hitting clinic, and the second game a real pitcher’s dual. With the split, the Irish run their record to 7-3.

Austin Mooney started on the bump for the Irish and went 4 2/3 innings to pick up the win. Brandon Marker came on in the 5th and held the Golden Bears scoreless for the final 2 2/3 for the save.

On the offensive side of the ball, Seth Eller led the charge, by going 3 for 4, including 2 doubles, a triple and driving in 3 runs. Thomas Hayes had a pair of hits on the day with a big 2 run double in the 5 run 3rd. Charlie Suich and Mooney both added a pair of singles and 2 RBI’s to the cause.

The second game was a much quieter offensive show, as the Irish were only able to muster 5 hits, all singles, for the entire game. Matt Martin pitched 5 strong innings, scattering 7 hits and only allowing 3 runs taking the tough luck loss. Suich came on in relief and pitched a pair of scoreless innings. His only blemish: a lead-off walk in the top of the 7th which did not add any further damage to the scorebook.

Martin led the way for the Irish with a pair of singles. Chase Thompson had a base hit in his return to the line-up after missing some time on the DL. Tyler Flaherty and Marker both had singles as well. The Irish scored on a pair of plays not involving base hits, when Christian Stamets hit a sacrifice fly in the 3rd driving in a run, and a bases loaded walk to Mooney in the bottom of the 6th.

The Upper Arlington pitchers were just too much for the Irish, and also with the bases still loaded in the bottom of the 6th Flaherty hit a screaming line-drive, which the Golden Bear second baseman made a nice play on, ending the scoring threat, taking a base hit and possibly a couple of runs away from the Irish. After a scoreless top of the inning, the Irish went quietly 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the frame.

Dublin Scioto will be back on the field Monday at 5:00, as they resume OCC Cardinal League play. They will host the Warhawks of Westerville Central at Irish Field.

Junior Irish Drop A Pair To Golden Bears

Upper Arlington – Irish battled hard on the road, but fell in both games of a twin bill to the Golden Bears of Upper Arlington by scores of 11-1 and 6-5. Stevie Carter continues his torrid hitting going 5 for 6, a walk, a stolen base and scoring 4 or the Irish’s combined 6 runs on the day. Phillip Parrott pitched 4 innings allowing no earned runs in his start in game 2 of the double header. Parrott has now allowed just two earned runs in his three starts on the hill. The losses drop the Irish record to 3-6 on the year.

In game 1, the Irish struggled to get anything going offensively as the Arlington pitcher struck out 8 in the five inning shortened game. The Irish kept the game close for awhile, but once again succumbed to one bad inning allowing 5 runs in the third as Irish pitching struggled with control problems. Carter opened the game for the Irish with a single, and scored what would ultimately be the only run for the Irish on an error by the Upper Arlington leftfielder.

The second game was a nip and tuck affair after the Irish spotted Upper Arlington three unearned runs in the first inning. In addition to Carter's hitting, the rest of the Irish bats came alive in the second game as Nick Berg singled three times with one RBI. Brian Cook, Parrott, Sam Ehret and Nolan Wehner also added hits of their own. The Irish just could not come up with that timely base hit in the second game to take advantage of the number of base runners and wildness by Upper Arlington pitching. In a frustrating game, the Irish stranded 12 runners in 7 innings in the one run loss.

The Irish are back in action again on Monday, traveling to Westerville to take on the War Hawks of Westerville Central, for an OCC Cardinal game, slated to go off at 5:00.

Upper Arlington Takes Both Games of DH From Freshmen

Upper Arlington ~ The Scioto freshmen scored 10 runs, but ran into a hitting machine in Upper Arlington losing the first game of the double dip by a score of 20-10. Will Houston blasted another triple, Aaron Strausbaugh had a 2 run double and Taylor Dyson scored twice and drove in a run. Game 2 saw a back and forth contest, in which the Golden Bears squeezed out a 13-12 win. Scioto erupted for 7 runs in the second and then rallied to tie the game in the 7th. Houston hit his second triple on the day. Chance Dummitt had 4 RBIs and Jacob Nave had 2 RBIs, both in clutch situations. The Irish played hard and almost handed UA their first loss of the season, however, fall to 3-5 on the young season.

In game 1, the Irish drew first blood when a Dummitt sacrifice fly scored Dyson. They added another single run in the top of the 2nd when a Matt Vogel plates Houston. After giving up a 6 spot in the bottom of the 2nd, the Irish continued to attack scoring 2 more runs in the top of the 3rd with a 2 run single by Brayden Pfeiffer, scoring Strausbaugh and Dummitt. In the top of the 5th, the Irish closed the gap that the Golden Bears had built by scoring 6 runs making it a 14-10 game. An error on the UA third baseman allowed Nate Reiser and Houston to score, an error by the catcher allowed Vogel to score, a Dyson single pushes Nave across and a double by Strausbaugh scores both Dyson and Bush. However, the UA bats would also come alive, and they would pound out a number of consecutive hits, scoring 6 runs with only 1 out to end the contest early.

On the mound, Strausbaugh, Nick Tizzano and Carl Kubalak combined for 4 strikeouts in their efforts.

In the first inning, again the Irish jump out to a lead, when Houston is hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, a tough way to get an RBI, scoring Riley Bush. The Irish expand their lead to 8-4 after the top of the 2nd: Dummitt singled, scores Nave and Dyson; Pfeiffer singled, scores Bush and Dummitt; Vogel singled, scores Pfeiffer; Nave walked, scores Houston and a wild pitch allows Vogel to trot home. In the 4th, a fielder's choice chases Houston home and a Nave single pushes Vogel across again. After the Bears re-took the lead with 5 in the bottom of the 5th, the Irish were able to tie the game at 12 in the top of the 7th when Dummitt doubled scoring Dyson and Strausbaugh. But it would not be enough, as UA is able to scratch out a run n the bottom of the 7th to take the game.

The pitchers in the second game were Bush and Troyer, with Troyer being saddled with the loss.

The freshman team will continue their road trip to Westerville, where they will take on the Warhawks of Westerville Central to resume league action. The game will be played at Highland Park starting at 5:00.

Varsity Cruises To Easy Victory Over North

Friday, April 9th ~ Dublin – The Irish scored 2 runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead that they would never relinquish. They steadily added to that lead and won easily over the Westerville North Warriors 11-4, upping their record to 6-2, and 2-1 in the OCC Cardinal. Seth Eller and Brandon Marker combined to shut down the North attack, and the offense came from the top to the bottom of the line-up as Scioto lit up the scoreboard with 15 hits, and scored in every inning but the 2nd.

Eller pitched 5 strong innings striking out 5, picking up his second win of the year, and Marker came in to pitch 2 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the save. Eller worked around a couple of jams, and only allowed a lone run in the top of the 3rd, and 3 more in the top of the 5th. The Irish offense started the scoring early with 2 runs in the bottom of the first, added 4 more in the 3rd, 3 in the bottom of the 4th, tacked on a lone run in the bottom of the 5th and Marker came in to shut down the Westerville bats. With another run added to the Scioto side of the board in the bottom of the 6th, Marker pitched a scoreless 7th to wrap things up.

Offensively the Irish were led by Matt Martin, who totaled 3 hits on the day with 5 RBI’s. The big hit of the day was a bases loaded triple by Martin in the 4th that gave the Irish all the runs they would need. Tyler Flaherty added to the attack with 4 singles of his own, as his batting average continues to rise. Nick Gastaldo had 2 doubles, Kris Simonton had 2 hits with an RBI, Austin Mooney had 2 hits with 2 RBI’s, Charlie Suich also 2 hits and an RBI, and Chris Vogel joined the hit parade adding an RBI double in the 6th to cap the scoring for the game.

Scioto will be back in action at Irish field on Saturday, hosting the Upper Arlington Golden Bears for a pair of non-league games starting at noon.

Irish JV Falls To North In Football Weather

Westerville – On what some had described as a “parka night”, in weather more suitable for a fall Friday night clash between a pair of high school football teams, the Dublin Scioto JV dropped a rough road game to the Westerville North Warriors by a score of 13-3 in a shortened game of 5 innings. The Irish record now stands at 3-4.

Things looked good early for the Irish, as they plated a pair of runs in the top of the 2nd inning after a scoreless first inning to take a 3-0 lead. Nolan Wehner and Nick Berg each had RBI singles for the Irish. However, that was the only offensive output the Green, Silver and White were able to muster, as the bats went silent the rest of the game. The offense went quietly, going 1-2-3 in the 4 other innings in which they did not score.

AJ Barnhardt took the hill and pitched admirably, keeping the Irish close for awhile. However, the Irish defense continued to struggle, suffering some miscues, allowing the Warriors extra outs, extra base runners, allowing them to build a lead that just could not be overcome.

The Irish are back in action again on Saturday, traveling to face the Golden Bears of Upper Arlington for a double header starting at noon.

Frosh Rally To Beat North In Extra Innings

Dublin ~ Friday night saw another gritty performance by the freshmen who even their record at 3-3 on the year. The freshman team battled their way to another victory, pulling out a 6-5 extra inning win over the Warriors of Westerville North. After North plated a pair of runs in the top of the 7th to take a 5-4 lead, the Irish responded with a run of their own to tie the game in the bottom of the frame to send the game to extra innings. After a scoreless top half, the Irish scratched out a run in the bottom for the win.

Brayden Pfeiffer had a very strong outing on the mound, only allowing 3 runs and striking out 2 in his 6 innings of work. Taylor Dyson came in to pitch the 7th, and Aaron Strausbaugh struck out a batter of his won pitching the 8th and picking up the win. Will Houston had another excellent defensive game behind the plate.

The Irish offense struck first when a misplayed ball by the Westerville right fielder allowed Dyson to score the first run of the game. In the 5th, Scioto again took advantage of an error by the defense when the 2nd baseman misplayed a ball chasing home Aaron Best and Dyson. In the bottom of the 6th, a single by Best scores Matt Vogel. In the 7th, Pfeiffer delivered a key game tying single, scoring Dummitt moving the game to extras. And in the overtime frame, the Irish played a little small ball. Houston singled, stole second, was moved to third on a bunt and then was followed by Nick Tizzano’s clutch hit driving in the winning run.

The freshmen Irish will take on the Upper Arlington Golden Bears in a double header starting at noon Saturday.

Wildcats’ Ace Silences Irish Bats, Varsity Falls to Westerville South

Wednesday, April 7th ~ Westerville – The Irish baseball team found it rough getting anything started against Westerville South’s leading pitcher, Ben Williams, as he held the Irish hitless until a 1 out single in the 4th inning by Austin Mooney. Williams was able to work around a base runner in each of the first 4 innings by virtue of a hit batter and a pair of walks, but only one of those base runners made it as far as second base. He ended up going the distance throwing just over 100 pitches to get the win, 4-2. Kris Simonton pitched 5 strong innings for the visiting Irish, and Brandon Marker came on in the bottom of the 6th, and made quick work of Westerville, getting 3 outs on only 5 pitches.

After a couple of wind aided fly balls found their way to the turf, an error, and a walk and a pair of singles made the score quickly 3-0 Wildcats after 1 inning. They would add another run in the bottom of the 3rd on a solo homerun, to go ahead 4-0. The Irish battled back and plated a pair of runs in the top half o the 5th. Matt Martin got things started with a single, and stole second. Simonton then drove in the first run for Scioto with a sharp two out single to left center, and he went to second with some heads-up base running, when the ball from the outfield trickled away from everyone on the infield grass. Nick Gastaldo would follow with a slow roller to short that he beat out to first, and then went to second on an errant throw by the shortstop, allowing Simonton to score.

The Irish again, had base runners on in the top of both the 6th and 7th innings, but couldn’t push them across. All night the Irish seemed to be overmatched at the plate and just couldn’t seem to get things going. Aside from the top of the 5th, the Irish never really threatened, and the result is a tough Cardinal League loss, dropping their record to 5-2, and 1-1 in the conference.

Scioto will try and bounce back on Friday night, as they welcome the Westerville North Warriors to a 5:00 OCC Cardinal battle. The first pitch scheduled for 5:00.

Irish JV Rebound With Victory Over WS To Even Record At 3-3

Dublin – After scoring a run in the first, the Irish broke the game open with 5 runs in the second, and a couple more throughout the game, on their way to an 8-2 victory over the Westerville South Wildcats to even their OCC Cardinal League record to 1-1.

On the hill, Tyler Flaherty pitched 4 innings allowing just 2 runs, and recording 6 strikeouts on the night. Stevie Carter pitched the final 3 innings scattering 5 hits to close out the game and pick up the save.

Offensively, the Irish were led by Brian Cook, who by virtue of his 3 walks and two stolen bases was able to score twice. In the second, AJ Barnhardt tripled, Carter and Zach Gerrasch both singled, while four other Irish batters walked, taking advantage of wildness by the WS pitcher. Barnhardt singled in the 4th driving in Flaherty, and Nick Berg added a triple and a single to the Irish effort.

The Irish are back in action on Friday, as they take their skills out on the road, facing Westerville North at 5:00.

Freshmen Rout South

Dublin ~ The Irish built up a lead of 3 to nothing after 1 inning. Westerville South battled back to pull to within 1 after the top of the 5th, but the Irish poured it on late, scoring 3 in the bottom of the 5th, and then 5 more in the bottom of the 6th to make the score 11-2. Westerville added a single run in the top of the 7th, but the Irish were too much for the Wildcats winning by a final score of 11-3

On the hill, Chance Dummitt combined with Austin Troyer to shut down the Westerville attack. Dummitt pitched the first 5 innings striking out 7, while Troyer pitched the final two to close out the game fanning 2 Wildcats of his own.

In the first inning, Dummitt singled to bring in Taylor Dyson, Brayden Pfeiffer singled to bring in Aaron Strausbaugh, and Matt Vogel drew a bases loaded walk to bring in Dummitt scoring the first 3 runs. In the 5th inning, Riley Bush led the offensive charge with a double to left. Strausbaugh beat out a bunt moving Bush to 3rd. Dummitt's ground out RBI brought in Bush. Strausbaugh scored on a wild pitch and Nick Tizzano followed with a walk, and scored by a hit by Troyer. In the 6th, Taylor Dyson got things rolling with a walk. He would eventually score on a wild pitch. Strausbaugh singled to center, Dummitt was hit by a pitch, Tizzano singled to left, and Strausbaugh would score on yet another wild pitch. Nathan Reiser's base hit scored Dummitt and Tizzano, and Troyer's single to right capped the scoring bringing in Reiser for the 11th run.

Defensively, Will Houston made a diving play behind the plate to end the third inning. He also made a terrific throw to third to get an out in the 7th inning as well.

The young Irish will next take to the field on Friday, hosting the Warriors of Westerville North at 5:00

Varsity Hangs On To Get First OCC Cardinal Win

Monday, April 5th ~ Dublin – The Scioto baseball squad jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, and then held on to take home their first OCC Cardinal league victory by a score of 7-5, running their record to 5-1 overall, 1-0 in the league. The pitching staff worked around several errors, walks, and a hit batter, and didn’t allow a single earned run.

Charlie Suich made his pitching debut and pitched 4 strong innings picking up his first win of the year. Seth Eller came on in relief in the 5th and Thomas Hayes pitched the final two innings for his first save of the year. The three combined allowing only 4 hits, and striking out 8 on their way to the win.

Matt Martin led the way at the plate with a pair of doubles and a pair of RBI’s. The Irish scored a pair of runs in the first inning on singles by Nick Gastaldo and Seth Eller before ground ball errors by the third baseman and shortstop allowed the two to score. In the second the Irish added a lone run when Martin led off with a double, went to third on Kris Simonton’s groundball which the pitcher threw to third trying unsuccessfully to get the lead runner, and scored on Gastaldo’s sacrifice fly to center. In the third, the Irish strung together 2 singles by Austin Mooney and Suich, RBI singles by Christian Stamets and Tyler Flaherty, and Martin’s second double of the day driving in the final two runs. The Scioto offense went silently the rest of the way

The Green, Silver and White hit the road this Wednesday in their next OCC Cardinal tilt, taking on the Wildcats of Westerville South at 5:00.

JV Drops Rough One To Open OCC Play

Lewis Center – The Irish lose 9-4 and fall to 2-3, on a perfect evening for baseball at Olentangy High School. After spotting the Olentangy Braves 3 runs in the first inning, the Irish battled back with 2 runs of their own in the top of the 2nd inning. However, the Braves began to pull away, in building up a 9-2 lead before Scioto scored 2 in the seventh building a rally, but the rally fell short as they left 2 runners on base.

Lost in the scoreboard was a solid effort on the mound by Phillip Parrott who struck out 5 in his outing. The defense struggled, and giving a good team extra outs is always difficult to overcome.

Stevie Carter led the way for the Irish with 3 hits, an RBI and 2 runs scored. Nick Berg also was on base three times in the loss with a single, double, walk and an RBI.

The JV looks to get back to their winning ways when they next take to the field at home on Wednesday, hosting the Westerville South Wildcats at 5:00.

Freshmen Fall In League Opener

Lewis Center ~ The Irish battled back from a 4-1 deficit to take a 5-4 lead, before Olentangy erupted for 11 runs late in the game to take the first OCC Cardinal game of the year by a final score of 15-5.

Aaron Strausbaugh bounced back from a rough first inning to throw 3 shutout innings. After taking those three innings off, the Olentangy bats came back with a vengeance, scoring 11 runs in the bottom of the 5th and 6th to end the game early.

Strausbaugh led the way offensively going 3 for 4, and scoring 2 runs. In the top of the first inning, the Irish struck first when Riley Bush singled, scoring Taylor Dyson to take a 1-0 lead. In the third, the Irish battled back to tie the game at 4 apiece. Strausbaugh scored on a fielder's choice. William Houston blasted a triple to score Chance Dummitt, Matt Vogel singled, scoring Houston. In the top of the 4th the Irish surged ahead when Strausbaugh scores on an error by the catcher.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Adam Padovan who suffered a knee injury. The Irish host Westerville South on Wednesday.

Varsity Splits With New Albany

Saturday, April 3rd ~ New Albany - The Irish had an easy time of it in game one taking the Eagles to the wood shed, winning in a shortened game by a score of 14-2. But what a difference a game makes: in the second game, New Albany was able to exact some revenge on the Irish, repaying the mercy-rule favor, winning 16-6 in 6 innings. The games today were played with blustery high winds that continued throughout the afternoon. In fact, it was so Windy, it blew a Porta-Potty over. Thankfully, Big Rick was not injured and just escaped! :)

In game 1 the Irish jumped on top early, scoring 3 runs i the top of the first inning when Seth Eller doubled, moved to third, and scored on Austin Mooney's ground ball that the third basemen could not handle. Christian Stamets grounded to the 2nd basemen who also could not make a play. After Tyler Flaherty walked to load the bases, both Mooney & Stamets scored when Matt Martin lashed a sharp single to center. All 3 runs were scored after the first 2 batters were out.

In the 2nd inning, Kris Simonton led off with a solid single to right field, stole 2nd, moved to 3rd on a single by Nick Gastaldo and scored on a ball hit to center by Shawn Thomas that the center fielder couldn't corale. Gastaldo stole 2nd and was moved to 3rd on the center fielder's error. Mooney followed with a ground out, knocking in Gastaldo. In the 3rd inning, the Irish scored 2 more runs on singles by Stamets and Flaherty that led off the inning. The 4th inning was the Big Inning - scoring 7 runs on 6 hits and 2 batters hit by pitches. Stamets just missed hitting his 2nd homerun of the season, doubling down the left field line.

Austin Mooney drew the pitching start for the first game, and after giving up 2 runs in the first, settled in and shut New Albany down the rest of the way. Mooney, along with the other pitchers, not only had to battle the opponent, but also, the high winds. Mooney picked up the W, giving up 2 runs, 3 hits, 3 walks, and had 3 K's in his 4 full innings of solid work. Nick Keeley came on in relief to pitch a scoreless 5th.

In game 2, the Irish again jumped out early scoring 3 runs in the top of the first on a single by Gastaldo, a walk to Thomas and a towering shot off the left center field fence by Eller, scoring Gastaldo. After a double steal by Thomas & Eller, Mooney doubled to right scoring them both. New Albany scored one run in the bottom half of the inning on a walk and an error.

In the 2nd inning, with 2 outs, the Irish scored 2 more runs on a double by Gastaldo, walks to Thomas and Eller, and a line shot single to left by Mooney scoring Gastaldo and Thomas. The Irish had forged a 5 -1 lead with New Albany coming to bat in the bottom half of the inning. The Irish were looking good...just like the first game. And then... the wheels came off. The first batter in the bottom half of the inning led off with a home run and the rout was on. New Albany scored 7 runs that inning to take an 8-5 Lead which they continued to add to in the later innings. The Irish scored one more run in the 6th inning on a walk to Gastaldo, and a double by Thomas driving him home, but it proved to be too little, too late, as the Irish could not bring Thomas in the extend the game.

Dublin Scioto will be back on the field Monday at 5, as they open OCC Cardinal League play. They will host the Olentangy Braves, first pitch is scheduled for 5:00 at Irish field.

JV Splits with New Albany On Blustery Day

April 3rd – Irish field – The weather this Saturday was better for sailing than for baseball, but none the less, the two teams went to battle. In game 1, the Irish found themselves down quickly 7-0 at the end of an inning and a half. The Irish put 5 up on the board in the bottom the second. Nick Berg had the big hit with a bases loaded single to score two runs.

New Albany took a 9-5 lead going into the bottom of the third when the Irish exploded for nine runs. Bases on balls and errors by New Albany along with three base hits did the damage. Score 14 - 9 Irish after three. The Irish added two more in the fourth to make it 16-9. New Albany scored 2 in the fifth to make it 16-11. A single run for the Eagles in the top of the sixth made the score 16-12. The Irish countered with two of their own for an 18-12 lead. The top of the 7th saw a pitching change for the Irish as Nate Gastaldo took to the hill. Gastaldo finished out the game as the Irish finally put New Albany away for an 18-15 victory.

Nolan Wehner entered the game in the third inning on the mound and kept New Albany from having a big inning with some great off-speed pitches and sneaking in the curve ball here and there. Wehner pitch a superb game for the win. Stevie Carter went 2 for 4, Berg 3 for 4 and A.J. Barnhardt 2 for 4 with a double and a triple.

New Albany puts on a hit parade in game 2, winning by a score of 27 to 9. The second game started the same as the first, but in this game the Irish couldn't find a way to stop the New Albany bats. New Albany had twenty hits in the game that only went to the fifth as the Irish went down in five innings.

Even though they played through gale force winds Saturday they never lost their fight, desire to compete or enthusiasm. Hats off to the coaches for teaching young kids "Irish Baseball" and kudos to the parents who stuck it out till the end. Just a note for the JV parents: you have not seen Nick Smith yet this year due to and ear operation but word has it he will be returning soon. Let’s give him a warm welcome when he returns hopefully next week.

Frosh Split with New Albany, Get First Win

Dublin ~ For the second game in a row, the Irish spotted their opponents to a large lead before battling back to tie, and then falling just short in suffering another tough loss, 11-10, this one in extra innings! In the nightcap, the Irish would not be denied, as they jumped out for 10 runs in the first inning in cruising to the 13-7 victory for their first win of the year, moving their record to 1-2.

The Eagles led by a score of 9-0 in game 1, before Scioto broke into the scoring column with a 3-spot in the bottom of the 5th. After giving up a lone tally in the top of the 6th, the Irish batted around to score 7 in the bottom of the frame to tie the game. After a scoreless 7th, New Albany was able to scratch out a run in the top of the 8th, and unfortunately the Irish were unable to answer in the bottom half. Chance Dummitt had 3 RBIs, and Jacob Nave and Aaron Best scored 2 runs each. Austin Troyer pitched 4 strong innings in middle relief to keep the Irish in the game.

The Irish finally broke through when Best came around on Riley Bush’s RBI fielder’s choice ground out. A wild pitch allowed Nave to come home, moving Bush to second, and he would score when Dummitt doubled. In the 6th, an error by the Eagles’ pitcher allowed Carl Kubalak to come home, a Nave single plates Nick Tizzano and a single by Bush scores Best. Dummitt’s second double on the day drives in Nave and Taylor Dyson, with Bush going to third. Bush would score on a wild pitch, and Brayden Pfeiffer would cap the scoring with a single plating Dummitt.

In game 2, the runs came often and early with Scioto jumping out for 10 in the first inning. New Albany scored 4 in the top of the second but the Irish answered, adding three more in their half of the 2nd, and then letting the defense do their work, scattering 3 runs over the next 5 innings. Riley Bush started out strong on the mound, with Taylor Dyson and Chance Dummitt providing excellent back-up combining for 4 strikeouts in relief.

In the bottom of the 1st, the Irish strung together 6 RBI singles by Dummitt, Brayden Pfeiffer, Nick Tizzano, Adam Padovan, Nathan Reiser and Bush (who scored twice in the inning) around a run scoring wild pitch. Aaron Strausbaugh ripped a bases clearing triple, and put a bow on the scoring when he came in on another wild pitch. In the second, an Adam Padovan sacrifice fly scores Pfeiffer, yet another wild pitch plates Tizzano, and a single by Taylor Dyson brings in Carl Kubalak.

Once again, props to Padovan's solid defensive effort behind the plate. And a salute to all the Irish fans who weathered strong winds to cheer on the green, silver and white! League play begins on Monday against Olentangy.

Irish Run Record To 3-0

Thursday, April 1st ~ Dublin – Another early spring perfect day weather-wise saw Dublin Scioto run their record to 3-0 beating a tough Hilliard Darby team 9-5. Once again, the Irish combined solid pitching, timely hitting and error free defense to put together the win. The Irish struck first scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Panthers battled back and scored 3 in the top of the third to briefly take the lead. But the Irish answered with 2 of their own in the bottom of the 3rd to retake the lead, one which they would not relinquish.

Kris Simonton made his first start of the year, going 3 strong innings and left in the 4th with a 4-3 lead. He caught two Panther batters looking at called third strikes in the third inning, both on nasty back door curve balls. Thomas Hayes took to the bump in the top of the 4th in his first outing of the year and held the Darby batters in check, scattering 3 hits and a pair of walks, allowing only two runs in his 3 innings of effort. Hayes also picked a runner off first in the 5th. Finally, Brandon Marker, also making his first appearance on the hill, pitched a scoreless 7th to wrap up the game.

The Irish offense was led by Tyler Flaherty who had three hits, 2 RBI’s and 2 SB’s on the night. Seth Eller delivered 2 hits and 3 RBI’s, and scored 3 times. Hayes had a hit, a pair of walks and 2 RBI’s. Marker also delivered a pair of singles in his first game on the year.

Scioto scored first in the bottom of the second inning. Eller led off the inning with a hard grounder which the Panther shortstop played off his ankle. Eller went to 3rd on Flaherty’s hit and run single to right field. After Flaherty stole second, both he and Eller scored on Hayes single to right. In the bottom of the third, Nick Gastaldo got things going with a single, stole second and scored on Eller’s single. Eller stole second and went to third on a pop up that the first baseman misplayed in the wind allowing Flaherty to reach first. The Irish then executed a double steal, with Flaherty getting into a run down long enough to allow Eller to score from third with a steal of home. In the bottom of the 5th, Gastalado got things going again with a walk. He would score on Eller’s triple, a bomb which struck the base of the fence in dead center field right at the 400 foot mark. Eller was driven home by Flaherty’s 2nd single of the night. After the Panthers scored a pair of runs in the top of the 6th to tighten the game to 6-5, the Scioto offense got going again in the bottom of the frame. After Sean Thomas and Matt Martin were both hit by pitches, Christian Stamets laid down a picture-perfect bunt down the third base line to load the bases. Thomas would score on Eller’s sacrifice fly to deep center, Martin scored on Flaherty’s third single of the night, and Stamets scored when Austin Mooney came off the bench to deliver a two out single to cap the scoring.

The Scioto team takes their show on the road this weekend, after an off day on Friday. They will travel to New Albany, to take on the Eagles in a double header, with the first game slated to start at noon.

JV Fall to Hilliard Darby 11-2

April 1st – No details currently available for this game

Eller’s dominance on hill moves Irish Varsity to 2-0

Wednesday, March 31st ~ Dublin – On a day that saw temperatures about 20 degrees warmer than the opener, Seth Eller threw a complete game shutout in his first start of the season. The offense made the most of its opportunities again, as the Irish defeated the Newark Catholic Green Wave by a score of 8-0. The Irish offense took a little while to get going, but they found their stride in the later innings.

Eller gave up a single on the first pitch of the game to the Green Wave leadoff hitter. That base runner was quickly erased by a textbook 6-4-3 double play, Kris Simonton, to Thomas Hayes to Nick Keeley. The next batter would work a 7 pitch at bat into another single, that would be the last base runner the Green Wave would see as Eller and the Irish defense set down the next 19 batters in a row to finish the game. Eller was very economical on the hill throwing only 68 pitches, in striking out 4, with 6 ground ball outs on his way to the 2-hit shut out.

The Irish offense parlayed 4 first inning walks and a number of wild pitches into 2 runs, before the Newark Catholic starting pitcher was pulled, as Matt Martin and Christian Stamets came around to score. The Green Wave reliever retired the next 8 Irish batters in a row, until Eller worked his way to second base by virtue of the second of his three walks on the night, and a wild pitch. Austin Mooney broke up the no hit bid with a sharp single to center scoring Eller from second. The Irish got 4 more runs in the bottom of the 5th, when Mooney hit a bases loaded single scoring Stamets and Nick Gastaldo, followed by a single by Tyler Flaherty scoring Eller and Chris Vogel, who was pinch-running for Mooney. The scoring was capped in the bottom of the 6th with Josh Nelsen, Dom Rosso and Jacob Nau coming off the bench to combine for a single, a walk and a single to score the final tally to make the score 8-0.

All Eller had to do was shut down the Newark Catholic bats for a final time, which he did with 3 fly balls in the top of the 7th. The last, was a spectacular diving catch on the right field foul line by Gastaldo to close the books.

The Scioto 9 don’t have any time to celebrate this win, as the Hilliard Darby Panthers bring their 1-1 record to Irish Field, on Thursday at 5:00.

JV Thumps Newark Catholic In Opener

March 31st – Dublin Scioto JV hurler Phillip Parrott and Newark Catholic pitcher matched each other through the first 4 2/3 innings until the Green Wave scored the first run of the game to break the 0-0 tie. That didn't last long as the Irish pushed three runs across to take a 3-1 lead they would never relinquish into the bottom of the sixth. Stevie Carter relieved Parrott and shut the Green Wave down in order. The Irish put the game away in the top of the seventh with 6 more runs. Carter closed the door again in the seventh and the Irish had their first win, by a final of 9-1.

Offensively, Stevie Carter led the way going 3-4.

Phillip Parrott earned the W in his first outing.

Freshmen Fall Short In Opener

Pickerington ~ After spotting the Pickerington Central Tigers to a 7-2 lead, the freshmen fought back to tie the game at 7, and again at 8, before finally succumbing after a 7th inning rally. Props to the freshmen for battling back! Good work behind the plate by Adam Padovan. Clutch hitting by Jacob Nave and Taylor Dyson, as they spent quite a bit of time on the bases. Pick Central's bats were just too much as they scored 4 unanswered runs in the bottom of the 5th and 6th to put the game away.

Aaron Strausbaugh and Chance Dummit both had solid efforts toeing the rubber for the Irish in their first time out, combining for 7 strikeouts on the night.

In the first inning Dummitt singled in Taylor Dyson for the first run of the year. In the second, Dyson drew a bases loaded walk, forcing Brayden Pfeiffer in to score. The big hit in the third inning was a double by Matt Vogel scoring Dummitt and Will Houston. The fourth inning saw Jacob Nave score on a fielder's choice, and Pfeiffer followed with a single, driving in both Nick Tizzano and Strausbaugh. The Irish scoring was completed in the top of the 5th inning when Nave singled to score Vogel.

Good luck to the Irish as they tangle with New Albany this Saturday.

Irish Off To 1-0 Start

Monday, March 29th ~ Grandview - Coach Scott Marple and his Dublin Scioto Irish started out off the 2010 campaign on the right foot today picking up an 11-2 victory at the hands of the Grandview Heights Bobcats on a cold, overcast gray central Ohio day. The Irish had a balanced offensive attack from top to bottom of the order, played solid defense and got 2 great early season pitching performances on the mound.

Matt Martin picks up the W for the Irish with 4 solid innings on the hill. Matt scattered 3 hits and 2 walks through his 4 innings of work. He worked his way out of a 2 on, none-out jam in the bottom of the 3rd inning, by coaxing a 5-4-3 double play and Austin Mooney gunned out another base runner stealing second to end the inning. Martin finished strong by getting 3 ground ball outs in a 1-2-3 fourth. Josh Nelsen took over in the 5th, and recorded his first save of the year, as he too spaced out the Bobcats offense, only allowing 3 hits, a walk and a hit batter.

Offensively, the Irish were led by Nick Gastaldo, who reached base safely in all 5 of his plate appearances. Nick had a walk, 2 singles and added a pair of doubles and 3 RBI’s. Christian Stamets hit his first career homerun, and added a triple, and a single and a pair of stolen bases. Thomas Hayes and Seth Eller both reached base safely 4 times each: Hayes with 3 singles and was hit by a pitch, he also stole a base; and Eller with a pair of singles, a walk and was also hit by a pitch, he too stole second base.

The scoring started right in the first inning with Hayes getting the first hit of the season, moved up on Eller’s single to right, and scored on Tyler Flaherty’s sacrifice to second base. The Bobcats battled back with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame. Stamets’ solo homerun accounted for the lone tally in the second inning. Hayes scored again in the top of the 4th after a single; he stole second and was driven in on Gastaldo’s single. In the top of the 5th, Stamets singled, stole second and scored on Martin’s two out single to left. In the top of the 6th, Hayes singled again, and scored on Gastaldo’s opposite field double to left, Nick would score on Flaherty’s sacrifice fly to left field. The Irish batted around in the top of the 7th and tacked on 5 insurance runs. The Bobcats put up a run in the bottom of the 7th which was just too little too late, as Nelsen worked out of a bases loaded jam to end the game.

After the game, Coach Marple was happy with the win, but added, “We’ve got lots of teaching opportunities, and there’s room for improvement”. The Irish take the field next in their home opener at Irish Field, on Wednesday at 5:00 against the Newark Catholic Green Wave.
