 DUBLIN SCIOTO COACHING STAFF

Scott Marple (Head Coach)

Coach Marple is currently in his 7th year as an employee of the Dublin City Schools and Scioto High School, where he works as an AP World History and Academic Intervention Teacher.

He is a 1994 graduate of DeSales HS, where he was named 1st team All-Ohio as a shortstop. He then played college baseball at Ohio Dominican, where he was an All-American, an Academic All-American, and played in the 1996 National Tournament. After graduating he played professionally for 5 years in minor league baseball, where he won two championship rings, won a Batting Title in 2000, and was a three time All-Star. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from ODU in Political Science in 1998, and his Master’s Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Sport Management in 2001, where he also served as the Rams’ Basketball Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach.

Scott and his wife Lori, who teaches at Dublin Coffman, live in Dublin with their son Brooks (1).


Patrick Elias (Varsity Assistant)

Coach Elias is beginning his 4th year as an assistant on the Irish staff.
He is a former three-year varsity starter at Warren G. Harding High School in Warren, Ohio where he earned All-Conference and All-County honors from 2002-2004. Coach Elias attended John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio before ending his collegiate career due to injury. He recently graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in Psychology. Coach Elias most recently worked with Ken Bolek, Director of Baseball Operations at IMG Baseball Academies in Bradenton, Florida to help direct their summer baseball program before joining Scioto High School full time as the school’s Attendance Counselor.


Kyle Sherman (Varsity Assistant)

Coach Sherman begins his 3rd year as a member of the Irish Staff.
He is a 2003 graduate of Scioto where he was an All-Ohio shortstop. Kyle graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University where he received his degree in secondary social studies education. While at OWU, Kyle played baseball and football for four years. He was a two time All-American baseball player and a four time All-Conference selection in both baseball and football. Kyle also received 1st Team Academic All-America honors. Currently, Kyle is in his third year working at Dublin Scioto as a history teacher, and he is also a member of the varsity football staff as the defensive backs coach.


Brent Marple (Varsity Assistant)

Coach Marple begins his 5th year in the Irish program. The 1997 graduate of DeSales was an All-CCL performer, who led his team to a District title his senior year, with a complete game victory over arch rival St. Charles in the championship game. He played his college ball at Division II Coker College in South Carolina before an arm injury curtailed his career. Coach Marple currently resides in Dublin, where he is an accountant for JPM Chase. He also gives private pitching lessons in his spare time.


Steve Bogner (Varsity Assistant)

Coach Bogner is beginning his 2nd season as an assistant at Dublin Scioto. He was an All-Conference performer at Willard High School, and played his collegiate baseball at Bluffton University. While at Bluffton, the former catcher was voted team captain during his senior season and helped lead the Beavers to setting all-time team records in multiple categories including wins, hits, and strikeouts. In addition to the team records, Coach Bogner earned his place in the individual record book in several categories including hit by pitch, stolen base percentage against, and caught steals. Currently, Coach Bogner works for Exel, a logistics company in Westerville, Ohio as a Senior Systems Analyst.


Chuck Rockwell (Varsity Assistant)

The Irish are extremely pleased to bring Coach Rockwell back to the ballpark. This will be his 14th year in a Scioto uniform, with only a one-year hiatus since the program’s inception in 1996. A veteran of the “Old School,” and renowned in central Ohio for his knowledge of the game, Coach Rockwell provides insight with regard to game situations, and has the ability to keep the entire program focused on what it means to be an Irish baseball player


Kyle Winter (JV Head Coach)

Coach Winter begins his 4th year as a member of the Irish staff, and his third as a Head Coach. He is a 2004 graduate of Scioto High School, where he was a 3-year letter winner, an All-OCC catcher, and team leader of the 2004 District Champions. Coach Winter played one year of college ball at Wilmington University, and is currently pursuing his degree in Sports Management at Columbus State.


Alex Place (JV Assistant)

Coach Place is a first year assistant on the Irish staff. He was a two- time first team All-Conference player at perennial power Archbishop Alter High School in Kettering, OH in both baseball and football. He attends The Ohio State University where he is pursuing a double major in Sport and Leisure Studies and Middle School Education. Coach Place also pitches and plays first base for Ohio State's Club Baseball team. Coach Place has a great deal of experience working with young players, including the travel baseball clubs of Patterson Park Classics and Action Sports Cyclones in the recent summers.


Mike Kula (Freshman Head Coach)

While this will be Coach Kula’s first spring as a full-time coach, he is certainly no stranger to the Irish baseball program. The 2005 Scioto grad was a central component in the back-to-back District titles the Irish won in 2004 and 2005 before continuing his baseball career at Georgetown College. Upon transferring to Miami University to pursue his passion for education and coaching, Coach Kula returned to head Scioto’s American Legion program for the past three years. As a former Irish Baseball and Wilkins Scholarship Award winner he certainly understand the program’s philosophy, and will be charged with instilling it in our youngest players. Coach Kula teaches Language Arts at Scioto.


Jonathon Braund (Freshman Assistant)

Coach Braund is the most recent addition to the Irish staff, who not only was a major factor in the back-to-back District titles the Irish won in 2004 and 2005, but also an experienced coach within Scioto’s growing summer program. As a player Coach Braund could always be counted on for superior effort and attitude, as well as a calming steadfast leadership style, which will benefit the freshman team greatly. He is an aspiring educator as well, having recently completed his degree at Bowling Green State University.


Brad Piunno (Summer Staff)

Coach Piunno begins his 4th year as a member of the Irish staff, and brings with him an impressive resume. The 2000 Scioto graduate was a 2-year starter, an Irish Baseball Award Winner, and a part of the Irish Baseball District Championship team of 1998. After graduation Brad continued his career at Wright State as a member of the Raider baseball team, and graduated with his business degree in 2004. Upon graduating Coach Piunno embarked on a coaching career that included stops as Scioto’s first Head American Legion Baseball Coach, an assistant Irish Football Coach, and the Head Baseball Coach at Sells Middle School. Currently Coach Piunno teaches Mathematics at Delaware Hayes High School.

Brad and his wife Niki, who teaches in Upper Arlington live in Hilliard.


Brad Moore (Summer Staff)

Coach Moore is beginning his 2nd year as an assistant on the Irish staff. The 2001 graduate of Fredericktown High School was All-Conference and All-District before continuing his playing career at Bluffton University. While at Bluffton, in addition to being a four-year letter winner and starter, Coach Moore contributed to a record setting run for the Beaver baseball team. Coach Moore graduated in 2005 with a degree in Accounting. He is currently employed at Able Roofing as a staff accountant.


Ryan Ramsey (Summer Staff)

Coach Ramsey will enter his fourth year as an assistant this summer, where he has contributed to a continuity in the fledgling program that has helped a number of young Irish players develop and take their game to the next level. The 2003 Scioto graduate was a two-year letter winner, and an All-Conference performer as an Irish Baseball player. Coach Ramsey spent one season at Tiffin University, before transferring to Xavier University where he earned his bachelor's degree in Sports Management. He is currently a co-owner of a Columbus-based Medical Equipment Business.

Kate is a Senior at Otterbein majoring in Education and Sports Medicine.


Mike Mooney (Voice of the Irish 2010)

Mike has graciously volunteered to be our announcer this year for all Varsity Home Games. He takes care of all the music and live entertainment before and after all games. Stop by and tell Mike thanks for his great job this year!


Patrick Elias (Head Coach)

Coach Elias is beginning his second full year as the Attendance Counselor at Scioto High School, fifth as a coach at the school, and first as the Head Baseball Coach. Coach Elias is a former three-year All-Conference Selection from Warren G. Harding High School in Warren, OH where he also garnered All-County Honors as a senior in 2004. Coach Elias attended John Carroll University in University Heights, OH before ending his playing career due to injury. In 2005, Coach Elias transferred to The Ohio State University to pursue his degree in Psychology. From 2005-2007 Coach Elias worked at IMG Baseball Academy in Bradenton, Florida with Director Ken Bolek to work with their summer baseball program. Coach Elias has worked with various player development schools as a hitting coach, most recently One-Thru-Nine Performance in Niles, OH from 2008-2009 as their Director of Operations. With friend and mentor, Scott Marple, Coach Elias grew to understand and love education and its use on the ball field. Beginning in 2011, Coach Elias will continue to build upon the tradition of Irish Baseball, passed down from coaches Callaghan and Marple, while infusing his own beliefs about high effort and attitude taken from his roots in northeast Ohio.


Kyle Sherman (Varsity Assistant)

Coach Sherman is beginning his 4th year as an assistant on the Irish staff. He is a former four-year starter for the Irish baseball team where he earned All-Conference, All-District, and All-State honors from 2000-2003. Coach Sherman attended Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. While at school he competed on the university football and baseball teams. Coach Sherman was elected captain of both his football and baseball team at OWU his senior year. He was a four-time All-Conference player in each sport as well as earning All-Region honors in both baseball and football and twice earning All-American honors in baseball. Coach Sherman was named the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Player of the Year his senior season for the Bishops baseball team. He was also named a 1st Team Academic All-American while at OWU. Coach Sherman is in his fourth year as an educator at Scioto and currently teaches AP European History and IB Psychology.


Mike Kula (Varsity Assistant)

Coach Kula begins his second year with the Irish Baseball Staff and first as a Varsity assistant in 2011. The 2005 Scioto graduate was a member of Scioto's only back-to-back District Championship teams in 2004 and 2005. Upon transferring to Miami University to pursue his passion for education and coaching, Coach Kula returned to head Scioto's American legion program for three summers. As a former Irish Baseball and Wilkins Scholarship Award winner, Coach Kula will be charged with instilling the Irish Baseball mentality into our players at all levels. Coach Kula teaches Language Arts at Scioto High School.
